Chapter 89: Haughty And Haughtier

Anne woke up groggily, dragging herself out of bed. It was becoming harder and harder to wake up on time lately. Most times she felt too tired to open her eyes, despite the fact that she was the kind of person who had a habit of waking up very early in the morning.

Her head felt somewhat heavy and she felt the urge to get back in the covers and just sleep some more but it was a work day.

This morning, her fatigue felt a bit more intense than normal. It came with a strange headache and heat in her body that made it hard for her to concentrate on anything, she ended up burning the egg she was frying for breakfast.

After getting ready for work, Anne left her apartment.

When she arrived at the company, the building was bustling with people going here and there, the event was in two days and there was still a lot of work to do.

Anne never got the chance to sit down at all even during lunch break, she kept receiving calls from the event planners, and having to go back and forth through the company.

At five PM, Clara tasked her to meet with one of the company’s models on her behalf. Immediately after the event, the company would launch new products, and an ad needed to be shot before the main launch. Despite having work to do for the upcoming event, Anne received the extra task of handling the main model for the ad shoot.

Though it was evidently too much work to handle for one person, Clara stressed that she couldn’t trust anyone else in the depart for this task, Anne not wanting to disappoint her agreed to handle the work.

The other evening, she’d had a warm and friendly dinner with Clara. The latter was as angelic as she looked.

During the dinner, Anne noticed that Clara seemed very interested in her. She asked a lot of personal questions that made Anne feel a bit weird to answer but she did anyway, it wasn’t nice to reject someone’s good intentions when they only wanted to make friends.

Anne called the model’s personal assistant to confirm the meeting once Clara gave her the task but despite calling several times, the call wasn’t picked up.

"Hey Anne, where are you going, aren’t you supposed to be taking these color samples back to the event planners?" Rebecca called behind her.

During this time, Anne came to realize how acutely lazy Rebecca was with work or perhaps she was just carefree, she wouldn’t bother to do it when she knew Anne would end up doing the work. Most of the interactions with the planners was done by Anne, Rebecca would merely follow along if they would be going to tour the venue, then she would proceed to use her time to take pictures of herself to post online without actually participating in the work they went there for.

Though Clara was strictly professional, Anne seemed to notice that she was quite fond of Rebecca as well, which made the latter comfortable enough to do whatever she wanted in the office.

"I can’t do that right now, I have to go meet up with Valeria Sage for the shoot tomorrow."

The ad needed to be shot a day before the event because the marketing team had stressed the importance of riding the high surge of public attention the event would bring so the products will be teased right to the public eye immediately after the event. Making the product release highly anticipated.

Every year, all of Sterling Enterprises newly released merchandise were sold out on pre-orders even before they were actually released into the market, that was due to the genius strategizing methods of the company’s marketing teams. Hence since marketing had decided, PR would have to instantly follow up and do their jobs regardless of the amount of stress they would have to endure.

Rebecca gasped, "Valeria Sage? She’s my idol, let me come with you!"

Before Anne could reply, Rebecca had grabbed her bag but Clara came out of her office at that moment.

"Becky, the planners called, they need you to submit the color samples to them immediately."

Rebecca couldn’t ignore direct instruction from Clara, she could only pout disappointedly, looking at Anne with a hint of envy as Anne managed to reach Valeria’s assistant and quickly left the office.

"Why does it have to be her? Clara has been favoring that girl a bit too much, what’s so special about her?"

"Special?" Kendra chimed in upon overhearing the words Rebecca muttered to herself.

"You think she’s special because she was the one assigned to meet Valeria?"

"Of course, she’s so lucky. Valeria is currently the hottest top model in town. She’s walked the runway in fashion city three times in a row in three years, it takes most models decades to get to walk fashion city for the second time but Valeria created a legend by doing that thrice. Why should a nobody like that Anne be allowed to meet with her personally?" Rebecca fumed feeling wronged.

She’d always idolized the gorgeous model, it was a known fact that Clara was casual friends with the top model, and Rebecca had always hoped to get a chance to stick with Clara enough till she can meet Valeria one day, but the day finally arrived and that opportunity was given to someone else. The more she thought about it, the more furious she became.

She had no idea if an opportunity like this would present itself again, when would that be? Probably in years to come.

"Ahh, I’m so pissed!" She couldn’t help but whine.

"Becky, you truly know nothing. All you see is the glamorous woman in magazine covers walking the runway, do you even know what Valeria is truly like?" Kendra asked.

"How would I know what she’s like when I haven’t even met her yet?" Rebecca replied still feeling upset.

"Then you should consider yourself truly lucky. Valeria is said to be the most haughty supermodel you’ll ever meet. She’s the classic example of fame getting into someone’s head. I heard that she’s changed personal assistants fifteen times in a month, what does that seem to say? No assistant has ever worked with her for more than two days."

Hearing that Rebecca looked thoughtful for a while before shrugging, "Doesn’t matter. She’s a supermodel, she’s allowed to be that arrogant. If I were in her shoes I’d also want to have the best people working for me and I’d weed out nasty idiots without a second thought."

"Well, that’s only because you’re not one of the people being treated as a mere object to trash away. You should thank Clara for stopping you on time before you went with her. Valeria Sage will make you wish you were never born."

Hearing that, Rebecca’s anger slightly reduced. If that was true, wouldn’t it mean that Anne was walking right into the den of a ferocious lioness?

"So you mean, working with Valeria is a total nightmare even if she actually looks like a beautiful dream?" Rebecca asked and Kendra nodded repeatedly before saying,

"But wait, why do you think Clara sent Anne to someone like Valeria. Since Clara is friends with Valeria, wouldn’t it be better to meet with the model herself? Do you really think..." Kendra’s voice lowered to a whisper as she added, "Clara actually wants Anne to have a hard time?"

Rebecca rolled her eyes, "No way, Clara has been so nice to her. That’s one of the reasons I don’t like that Anne, Clara and I were getting close but now she came along and took that. I even saw her having dinner with Clara the other day hanging out like friends, these are things Clara used to do with me."

As time went on since Anne started working at the department, Rebecca continued to dislike Anne for this sole reason. She was the person who used to follow Clara, they were almost really good friends but Clara had pulled away all because of Anne. It infuriated Rebecca to no end.

"But I think..." Kendra thoughtfully said, "Clara doesn’t really like her that much. If I was in Clara’s shoes and I had to send someone to a certified bitch like Valeria, I’d pick someone I really really dislike."

It really didn’t make sense to Kendra, if Clara really liked Anne wouldn’t she want to protect Anne from meeting someone so mean, or was she thinking too much about it? They all knew Clara was a sweet and kind person, but...

Rebecca still didn’t agree, Clara had always been really kind even to lowly people who didn’t deserve it.

"Nah, you’re thinking too much. Clara adores that goody two shoes Anne, she only sent her there because she wanted Anne to get more exposure. Only Clara does nice things like that for people."

Kendra shrugged dropping the conversation.

Clara on the other hand, overheard their conversation, a deep unfathomable gaze flashed in her grey eyes before she came out of her office with an angelic smile on her face.
