Chapter 88: Rejected

Everyday, she would visit Kristen at the hospital asking him to wake up soon.

One such days, she went to the hospital but Kristen wasn’t in his room. Her heart had thumped in anticipation with the hope that he’d woken up only to be told by the nurse that someone had instructed he’d be moved to a better room.

At first Anne thought it was her uncle trying to play a weird trick again. However, she saw butler Jones signing some papers down the hallway. Upon sighting her, he bowed.

"Master sent me, he wants to make sure your brother is well provided for. He says your deal with him will be incomplete if he doesn’t make sure your brother is fully well."

Anne was surprised to hear that the masked person had sent him.

"He...sent you to do this?" Anne asked with incredulity.

Butler Jones gave a nod. "My work here is done, so I’ll be going back to the manor now. Master also instructed me to find out if you’re in need of anything. So please don’t hesitate to call me whenever you need something."

After that, he said a short goodbye and left.

Anne didn’t move for a while, she continued to ponder silently.

The masked person was helping her, was it to keep her indebted to him?

Yes she had asked for his help knowing firmly well that she had nothing much to offer him in repayment, and she was certain he knew that too.

When she walked into the new ward Kristen had been assigned, it felt like she was walking into a five star hotel. It still had the normal hospital amenities, but everything was made comfortable and it felt like home.

She caressed Kristen’s hair with a smile.

"Do you like it here? I have someone to thank for this."

Thinking about it, the last time she’d seen the masked person was after that night she’d gotten drunk. Most times he wasn’t at the manor, which she was quite grateful for because it continued to push back her obligation of fulfilling the contract terms, but at the same time it felt quite strange...

Whenever she went to the manor and he wasn’t there, she always felt a strange emptiness in the air. That emptiness would shroud her like the very air she breathed in and every movement she’d hear from outside, every sound would make her eyes light up hopeful that it was him, and when she’d discover it wasn’t him coming, disappointment would cloud her all over again.

For some reason, he no longer felt like someone who bought her body, he felt like an ally.

She hadn’t found an ally in the so called relatives she had but in a strange man whose identity she knew nothing of, regardless, it made her feel safe.

She smiled warmly at the thought.

.....

"Did you hear? Bernadette Nelson asked Donald Sterling to be her date for the anniversary party next week but he turned her down in front of everyone." Some employees walking along the halls of Sterling Enterprises gossiped softly.

"Really? When did that happen?"

"Just yesterday. She came here, right outside the company she confessed to him and asked him to be her date to the party. We all know the Nelsons are VIP guests at every Sterling celebration, but Donald actually turned her down coldly, not just that, he told her straight to her face that he had a date already."

The listener gasped.

"God! These Sterling sons are ruthless when it comes to rejecting women, now even the youngest son is being that cold to a beauty like Bernadette."

"Right? What man in his right mind would reject Bernadette? She’s like the iconic idol many look up to. I even got it on camera, if I uploaded it online it would explode, but I don’t want the Nelsons to come for my neck, so I’ll just keep the video and show close friends."

"You filmed it? Let me see, let me see!" The girl excitedly chattered.

Finding a spot within the cafeteria, they both sat down and one of the girls brought out her phone and played a recorded scene.

In that scene a beautiful girl wearing a light yellow dress that hugged her envious hourglass figure stepped down from a black luxury van with two guards following behind.

Donald Sterling was just coming out of the company heading for his own sports car when the girl quickly stopped him.

She looked like a beautiful budding goddess, every stance radiated full confidence as she approached the handsome youth.

Both standing facing each other, the gathering crowd were already beginning to murmur about how perfect they looked together. It wouldn’t be a surprising match as they came from the same circle.

However the young man didn’t look too happy to see the beautiful young woman before him.

"Don, are you going somewhere? I’m free right now, why don’t we have brunch together?" The girl asked sweetly.

"Sorry, I’m busy right now." He made to side step her but she quickly stopped him.

The girl’s eyes showed nervousness, as if she had prepared immensely before coming here.

"I...I have something I need to tell you."

"I don’t have time." He deadpanned.

"It’ll only take a minute."

It was evident the girl wasn’t used to this, she was a beauty men would chase, not the other way around, but she seemed determined.

Taking a deep breath she began, "Don, I’ve always really liked you, I think we would look really good together and I don’t see myself with anyone else but you. Will you be my date to the anniversary party?"

The crowd outside the company blew up. They were witnessing a legendary moment.

If these two got married someday, this moment would be marked as the start of a great love story.

"Sorry, I don’t feel the same about you. I have someone else I want to ask to the event, I’m sure you can find someone to go with." It was evident he tried to not make it sound cold and dismissive, but everyone heard it in his tone. He didn’t want the young woman one bit.

The spoiled young lady who didn’t know how to deal with rejections since she wasn’t used to them suddenly burst into tears in front of everyone but Donald walked past her leaving her to fend for herself.

The girls currently gossiping about this topic replayed the scene over and over again marvelling at the absolute chilliness in his voice.

"He literally wasn’t moved by her confession at all. Do you think he’s already fallen for someone else?" One of the girls asked.

"Obviously, why would he reject such a gorgeous girl otherwise?" Leaning in, she added softly, "I have a suspicion that the girl he likes works in this company. I have a reason to suspect that because if you noticed, young master Donald doesn’t come to the company at all before, but he does very frequently now, isn’t it to see someone?"

The group gasped, "I noticed it too, he’s always here lately even though he doesn’t work here. Who could the girl be?"

"I have no idea, but I definitely want to find out."

.....

The director’s office.

Donald rushed into the office to hide away from the young ladies looking for him lately. He’d received two invitations to be someone’s date to the event so far, and he wasn’t interested.

They were treating it like a dating opportunity rather than a mere event. He was exhausted, he hadn’t even shelled out the guts to ask the person he wanted to go with yet and ladies from several aristocratic families were after him so relentlessly.

His brother was currently busy talking to his secretary, so without interrupting, Donald made himself comfortable as he found a seat.

"Postpone the meeting with Ridge and Co. to seven PM today." Andrew instructed his secretary.

"Yes sir." Cynthia nodded then made to leave the office but hesitated slightly.

"Director Sterling, can I...I have something to ask you." Cynthia finally said biting her lips hesitantly.

"What is it?" Andrew questioned without raising his head to look at her.

"Do you...?" She stopped to think then began again, "Will you...?"

She stopped again as if she didn’t have the guts to finish the question.

Andrew noticed she wasn’t speaking, he finally raised his head thinking something was wrong related to work.

"What is it?"

Now facing the man’s cold gaze, Cynthia quickly flinched and blurted, "Nothing." Without another word, she hurried away, chastising herself.

What was she even thinking? After the way her boss had looked at that girl the other day, she didn’t even stand a chance at all.

It was just that... she’d imagined a fairytale scenario of her going with her boss to the event. She had almost gone ahead of herself.

Donald concealed a bout of laughter inside his palm and Andrew sent him a questioning look.

"What is so funny?"

"I guess I’m not the only one being asked to the party, even your secretary wants to go with you."

Andrew resumed his work.

"What are you talking about?" He muttered disinterestedly.

"Don’t tell me you’ve been planning to go alone?"

"So?"

"Everyone is strictly required to come with a plus one, you can’t show up without a date." Donald informed.

"Can’t is just a word, I can do whatever suits me."

Donald could only sigh knowing his brother didn’t like following rules anyway.

"Well, I plan on going with someone. It’s going to be real fun." Donald chuckled to himself.

For a moment, it seemed as if Andrew didn’t care before he suddenly stopped typing abruptly, his gaze raising as if he was thinking of something.

"Did you say everyone has to go with a date."

Donald nodded, curious what his brother was suddenly thinking.
