Chapter 196: Unholy Things

Anne felt herself land against a solid frame. Water cascaded around her, soaking her hair and plastering it to her face.

This solid frame seemed to shield her head as she could feel the water pouring over her in every direction except the top of her head.

Slowly she raised her head and her gaze landed on a firm jawline first, with smooth fair skin that didn’t have a single flaw. The water dripped down his face making his skin look like porcelain. Her vision moved up to his full lips, a high nose bridge that pulled upwards to thick brows beneath which deep dark eyes were affixed on her, that familiar gaze deeply piercing as if they wanted to see right through to her soul.

Her heart quivered, racing in a steady rhythm.

His palm was spread protectively over her head while his left hand had grabbed her, she could still feel his fingers wrapped tightly around her arm.

"We have a shower upstairs if you’re so eager to stand under spraying water Annelise." His voice was rough and it sounded so close, close enough that her eyes followed every movement of his lips.

"I...I didn’t do this on purpose, the water just came out of nowhere." She replied, the sound of the spraying water audible enough that she almost believed it drowned her own voice.

He moved only slightly and in the next second, the water suddenly ceased.

"It’s that easy to turn off." He gave her an admonishing look after flicking the switch that was right next to her but she couldn’t find due to the sudden gush of water.

"I was trying to turn it off but the water was too strong and I could barely see through it so I... that’s when you came."

His look of admonishment hadn’t wiped off his expression as he sighed lightly, his fingers which had been around her arm slid downwards until he grasped her wrist instead.

"You’ll catch a cold, your hair is wet."

He muttered as he began to pull her along, Anne merely followed along quietly as he took her into one of the guest bathrooms nearby.

He moved quickly, grabbing two unused towels which were kept inside the bathroom, unfolding one he wrapped it around her shoulders before Anne could even move to take the towel from his hands.

He reached for the second one, placing it over her head and she felt his large hand ruffle the towel over her head wiping her wet hair, she could only stand frozen, looking up at him with surprise filled wide eyes.

Earlier in the garden he could have chosen not to interfere when she was being drenched, but he’d come in anyway, now thinking back to how he’d placed his palm over her head her heart skipped a beat frantically. And now here he was drying her hair.

"There were two towels, you could have used one to dry yourself too." She mumbled softly as he used the towel to absorb the water in her hair.

"I didn’t need one." He remarked nonchalantly, his eyes not on her face but on her hair.

He just said he didn’t need the towel, but Anne could see droplets of water falling from his hair.

She couldn’t help but feel even more astonished at his actions.

Perhaps the surprise showed too much in her eyes he suddenly stiffened, eyes lowering to meet hers.

"Are you cold?" He peered down at her with what anyone could deduce to be concern in his clear black eyes.

Her mind was whirling like a working engine trying to figure out why he was suddenly being so good to her when he asked that question, she didn’t fully focus on what he asked but she nodded absentmindedly.

Before she could even take another breath, her whole world suddenly seemed to spin and her feet left the floor. She gasped audibly grabbing onto his coat to stabilize herself as she had thought she would fall from the sudden movement, but she was held securely in his arms.

With her mouth falling open she realized he’d actually carried her, and was already walking out of the bathroom.

"Why did you pick me up? I can walk!" She suddenly protested when she came back to her senses, a burning heat already rising up her face painting her cheeks red.

"I know you can." He replied succinctly, walking in long strides, her weight seeming non existence in his arms.

"Put me down then."

Why would he even carry her? She was a grown woman who had hands and feet, she could walk fine on her own.

The gesture felt way too romantic coming from him, it didn’t make her uncomfortable, but it made her heart beat fast.

"Your clothes are wet and the floors can get slippery, you could fall."

"Doesn’t matter if I fall, I’ll just get back up again, now please put me down." She said frantically looking around if anyone were around to see her being carried like this.

"Falling won’t be good for you or our baby."

Anne stiffened momentarily as she heard him utter the word ’our baby’ She looked up at his profile a little stunned before looking away quickly.

"I’ll walk carefully, put me down before someone sees."

He suddenly stopped walking, making her think he was actually going to put her down now, but instead he glanced down at her with narrowed eyes.

"And what’s wrong if someone sees?"

Anne slowly lowered her head, still feeling his gaze on her.

"It’s... embarrassing."

Several seconds passed by after she said that he still didn’t move, neither putting her down nor moving forward, when she raised her gaze to his she found a deep frown on his face.

"What makes it so embarrassing?" His question came out hard, he was glowering down at her as if he were displeased by what she’d said.

What did she say wrong?

Didn’t he know what the household staff would think if they saw her in his arms at that time?

"It’s embarrassing because they’re going to think that..." She suddenly stopped herself from completing the words, her face burning up deeply.

He raised an urging brow at her and in order to escape having to talk, Anne wriggled to free herself but his arms tightened and he continued to carry her firmly without even budging to her struggles in the slightest bit.

She struggled and struggled some more in her frustration of him not letting go despite the fact that they were literally in an open space of the whole house where any of the maids could walk out to see them, she suddenly blurted out,

"They’re going to think that we’re going up to do unholy things that married couples do."

After blurting out the words, Anne suddenly stiffened realizing what she just said, biting her lip in self reproach she slowly let herself look up to his face and found a light amusing smile on his lips.
