Chapter 174: Choice

"You must be mistaken, why should it be her? There are other more qualified employees that fit the position better than her. She can’t become manger of team A." Jessica quickly stepped forward after the messenger’s words had settled into her.

No one had expected that the manager of team A would suddenly quit his job, and quite frankly no one expected that Anne would be the one to receive this position.

"I’m only a messenger miss, I was sent to deliver this message to her and congratulate her on her new position, if it’s something that you don’t agree with, you can take up your complaints to HR." After saying his piece, the messenger gave Anne an encouraging smile before leaving the department.

Clara instantly rushed out of her office at this moment watching the man leave and realizing that everything she heard just now wasn’t an illusion, it was actually real.

Her widened eyes collided with Anne’s and she witnessed as a slow smile graced Anne’s lips.

"I told you didn’t I? I would leave, but only because I don’t want to be anywhere around you anymore. You didn’t really think I was giving up did you?"

Clara’s eyes were filled with disbelief, through Anne’s unperturbed expression, Clara finally understood something.

Anne wasn’t helpless after she fired her like she thought she would be, because she had another trick up her sleeve.

How did this ordinary woman manage to secure the position of team A manager?

Did she have someone in power backing her up within the company?

No matter how much Clara thought about it, she didn’t want to believe it. So she stomped towards Anne, snatching the letter she was holding sharply and tearing it open.

The words;

Appointment Letter, was written boldly and a bitter feeling twisted terribly inside her chest.

How could this be?

"I had nothing against you Clara, not until you chose to battle with me when I thought I was your friend. I still clearly remember what you did to me, and I know fully well that you would do anything to get rid of me from this company, know one thing Clara, I’m not going anywhere, and from now on, you’ll have to compete directly with me."

Clara couldn’t say a word even as Anne turned and walked away. The fury in her heart rose higher and even higher so much so that she could only angrily tear up the letter she’d grabbed from Anne but she knew that wouldn’t stop Anne from getting this job, not with chairman Sterling’s signature written on that very letter.

In this moment, Clara no longer bothered to keep up appearances in front of the employees, it was as if she’d slowly begun to lose her mind as she suddenly cried out in rage.

She wouldn’t let this happen, she didn’t care if Anne had already been appointed or not, she couldn’t let Anne work on an equal position as her.

"All of you, why are you just standing there? Go complain to HR right now. She only joined this company a few months ago, she can’t get this job! Go right now!" Clara’s screech made the employees jump out of their reverie.

They had never seen Clara this furious before, it felt like the pleasant angel they’d known her to be was non existent right now. She was like a completely different person that Anne’s issue seemed to have momentarily escaped their minds as they were lost in a daze staring at Clara.

In all honesty, Anne might have joined the department not too long ago, but the work she did far surpassed what they did on a daily basis. She had proven herself to be incredibly hard working and not once had she failed a single task.

There had been a time they used to deliberately pass on their tasks to her, but without complaint she would carry out the job perfectly.

So many times they’d tried to break her, but they had failed, eventually they’d given up.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration if one said that they spent every work day focusing more on company gossip and chatting about it, rather than doing the exact jobs assigned to them, it was why their team never truly achieved anything monumental, and with Clara being the angelic easy going person, she never enforced their jobs on them like she was supposed to.

If one were to pick anyone to promote based on their working habits, none of them would pass their criteria, hence the employees were a bit afraid to go and complain about Anne’s sudden promotion, however with Clara’s sudden change in attitude and the strangely frightening aura around her, they couldn’t disobey her orders, hence they all rushed to HR to file down complaints.

.....

A notification had suddenly spread around the company and many were surprised to see it.

In a few days time, a new CEO would be appointed in the company.

Many knew that the position had been left vacant for far too long and the company had been run by chairman Sterling for far too long, it was due time for succession to happen however a powerful debate was currently going on.

The next CEO would undoubtedly come from the Sterling family, but no one could tell which one of the Sterling sons it would be.

This debate had been ongoing for quite a while when another explosive piece of news reverberated through the company.

Michael Sterling had suddenly returned and many speculated that he’d come back to take over the company.

To those who thought that the company would be given to the younger Sterling sons instantly changed their opinions.

Would it be one of the sons, or the father?

It was an interesting mystery every employee in the company was waiting for unfold.

Meanwhile within the chairman’s office.

Elder Sterling was interrupted from a conversation with the manager of HR when one of his grandsons suddenly stormed into his office.

"This isn’t fair grandpa, I’ve worked hard for this company for a very long time. If I’m not going to be CEO that’s fine, but I’ve been stuck in the same position for a very long time, don’t you think I deserve something too?"

Gabriel had just heard the news and it instantly hit him like a pile of bricks. He knew he no longer had a chance for the CEO position, it would either be his useless father of Andrew.

With such a competition he didn’t want to be a part of it anymore, his brother could battle their father for it, however he hated the fact that he continued to remain in the same position in the company for a very long time without scaling upwards, hence he came to complain.

"That’s all for now David, you may go." Elder Sterling calmly dismissed the man and he respectfully stood up and exited the office.

Elder Sterling glanced up at Gabriel then and instructed in a collected tone, "Sit."

Gabriel took in a deep breath before taking his seat and elder Sterling began,

"It was always going to be your turn next Gabriel, I have big plans for you as well."

Hearing this, Gabriel’s face seemed to relax.

"What kind of plans?"

"Your brother had to give something to get what he wants, it’ll be the same for you."

"What do you mean?" Gabriel queried feeling a strange premonition.

"Your marriage." The older man dropped this bomb without mincing words,

"I have an arrangement with a family for one of my grandsons, marry their daughter and you get the position of COO in the company. Your choice."
