Chapter 159: Future Matriarch

The grand dinning room echoed with the sound of argument from two middle aged women.

One of them was Fiona Vaughn, the wife of Henry Vaughn, and the other woman was Elara Vaughn, these two women were from the Sterling family second branch though they weren’t actually Sterlings by blood, nor were their husbands.

Before his wife died, elder Sterling had vowed to protect her family members.

Kate Sterling had a sister who had two sons, those sons should be around the age of elder Sterling’s own son Micheal Sterling. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

Years after Kate’s death, her sister passed away too leaving her sons as orphans, in order to make true on his promise to protect his late wife’s family, elder Sterling announced a second branch of the Sterling family in Verizon city, his wife’s nephews and their wives and children will be treated as Sterlings even if they do not carry the name and blood.

Knowing the kind of love he shared with his wife, the second branch Sterling family members became willful and did as they pleased in the whole city since the Sterling family basically dominated all of Verizon city.

Elara and Fiona had never gotten along right from the start even though their husbands were brothers. Having enjoyed a life of luxury they competed at every turn and every opportunity they could find, hence their racous argument at the dining hall immediately they set eyes on one another.

"It’s good to know you haven’t changed at all Fiona, that bag you’re carrying is so last season. And look at that, is your stylist dead? That outfit is such a disaster."

Fiona smiled good naturedly, the middle aged woman carrying a soft beauty despite her age, it evidently showed the level of care she took in maintaining her looks, Elara wasn’t lacking in the same amount of grace and beauty either making them both outshine each other wherever they went, or at least they tried to.

"Your sense of humor is still the same Elara, so dry and unamusing. My stylist is very much alive and this outfit...I wasn’t really expecting you to get it after all, your sense of style is still stuck in the past. My stylist Is Avery James, I don’t expect you to know who she is but she is currently the hottest celebrity stylist." Fiona retorted with a calm malice laced through her tone yet she kept a soft polite smile on her face.

"Hahaha, you crack me up. My style might be old to you but that is only normal, fashion is a term you’re clearly unfamiliar with. This Avery James you refer to as a celebrity stylist, didn’t you hear she was caught sleeping with a celebrity’s husband and she got fired and blacklisted, she’s currently a nobody in the fashion world. As for my style, you wouldn’t know what vintage is called. This type of fashion style is for women bred with grace In their bones, certainly not a wannabe like you."

The jabs they threw at each other might be disguised by smiles, but it was direct and brutal as well, neither of them going easy on the other.

This kind of interaction was something both their husbands were used to, hence both men didn’t interfere, they sat on the same side quietly discussing business as if they were oblivious to their wives’ silent agrression towards each other, their children also sitting and interacting calmly until elder Sterling walked into the dining room.

Both women, though displeased by the other’s taunting words had to go completely silent as the man walked into the room.

They all stood up from their seats respectfully.

The older man strode towards the head seat, his constantly strict expression carrying a trace of warmth. He scanned the faces of everyone present, each of them showing a fawning smile before taking his seat and the rest of them followed suit as well at the exact moment Andrew entered the dining room with Anne in tow.

Everyone’s surprised gazes turned to Andrew, their eyes slowly trailing downwards where the man’s hand was entwined with the woman next to him.

The room fell completely silent for a moment no one could utter a word.

When they heard that he’d gotten married, most of them had assumed they misheard. If anyone of them could be married, it wouldn’t be Andrew, but the news they received was clear. Though it was a marriage elder Sterling strictly instructed should be kept within the family and not made public, it still was hard to digest.

The hardest among the Sterling sons had actually gotten married?

Since it was kept private, maybe it wasn’t a serious marriage after all. Not until he walked in hand in hand with a beautiful young woman everyone could only assume to be his wife.

Anne knew she would be meeting new people today, but she certainly hadn’t expected to be caught under the eyes of many immediately they arrived. She felt the urge to be buried away due to the embarrassment of having multiple gazes on herself like this, it was only after a short while did she realize they weren’t actually staring at her, they were staring at her hand.

Her eyes followed their gazes and she seemed to suddenly be aware of the fact that Andrew was still holding her hand...he wasn’t just holding, he laced his fingers tightly with her as If he had no plans of letting go at all.

Anne’s face burned and she quickly tried to pull her fingers out of his own, to clear the silently awkward atmosphere but the second she made that move, the hand holding hers tightened as he stared sideways in her direction with a look of bewilderment.

It almost felt like he also wasn’t aware of the fact that he was still holding her hands until he followed her gaze downwards, realization lit up his face and he let her go, his face becoming more rigid for some reason.

Anne wondered why the walk to the dining hall had felt so slow, she realized now that the short walk down the hallway had made her heart feel warm, because her hand was encased in the protective warmth of his own.

It had felt long because she hadn’t wanted it to end.

When she’d tried to tug her hand free under the strange looks from everyone, Anne didn’t know if it was instinct that had caused him to hold her tighter as if he didn’t want to let go, but whatever the reason might be, it made the warmth in her heart soar ten times higher.

Not saying a word to her he proceeded forward, nodding silently as greeting to everyone present before he took his seat next to elder Sterling.

Anne was left under the curious scrutiny of the women. This time there was no longer shock in their eyes but a quiet appraisal.

Elder Sterling had a look of pride in his eyes as he beckoned Anne over with a warm smile. The chair next to Andrew was pulled out for her by one of the Sterling family staff standing aside.

"I’d like to officially introduce my granddaughter in law, Annelise Sterling. The future matriarch of the Sterling empire." The older man announced proudly. He looked extremely satisfied as he spoke making it evident to everyone that Anne was truly valued by him.

Before anyone could react to the news, a booming voice was suddenly carried over into the room.

"You’ve always been prone to making hasty decisions Dad, my son couldn’t possibly get married without me."

Hearing this voice, Anne looked over to where the voice was coming from.

A man whose face looked very familiar stood at the entrance, he was tall and had an overbearing aura with strict black eyes. With one look, one could be able to tell he was a Sterling, there was something about them that always made them stand out.

And one thing the man had said caught Anne’s attention.

He said his son, which meant...

Her eye widened in surprise as she turned to glance at Andrew, the latter’s dark eyes held an unfathomable emotion but if one looked closely, they would see an unbridled anger directed at the man who just came in...his own father.
