Aiden froze. Her words stung, and for a moment, he felt a strange heaviness in his chest.

He knew she was right. Spencer would never look at him that way. But hearing it out loud... it made the reality of it hit harder. Still, he wasn’t going to show weakness.

"I know that," Aiden said stiffly. "I don’t need you to remind me of it."

But Mia shook her head. "Not really. I’ve just... lost too much already. And I realized that the little things I still have... they’re precious. I don’t want to lose them, too."

Her voice was soft, almost like a whisper. But it carried a weight that Aiden could feel deep inside.
