Born Into Villain's Family: I Have a 200\% Rebate System-Chapter 259: Accident Or Mistake?
Chapter 259: Chapter 259: Accident Or Mistake?
Lucas finished his office work. Even though he was attending university, he was doing an internship at the same time, so that his chances of getting hired increased.
It was already evening by the time he got off. He got in the car his father had bought for him and started driving.
Suddenly, a figure jumped in front of his car.
Lucas’s eyes widened. He slammed his foot on the brake with all his strength. The tires screeched loudly, and the car came to a sharp stop just a few feet away from the person.
His heart pounded in his chest. "What the heck...?" he muttered under his breath.
Lucas quickly opened his car door and rushed out. A girl stood there, right in the middle of the road, staring at him as if she had been waiting for this.
She looked... oddly cheerful. Her hair was messy, her clothes simple, but there was something strange in her eyes.
"Hey! Are you okay?" Lucas asked, stepping closer. But at the back of his mind, he was already wondering: Is this a scam? Did I turn on my car camera today?
Before he could check, the girl blinked at him with a blank face. Then, she tilted her head and said, "Why didn’t you hit me?"
Lucas froze. His brain took a second to catch up. "...What?"
"I was standing right here," the girl said, pointing at the road like it was some obvious thing. "You should’ve hit me. Full speed. No brakes."
Lucas stared at her, speechless. Was this girl serious?
"Are you... Are you crazy or something?" he finally asked, still trying to process what she just said.
The girl crossed her arms and sighed like she was tired of explaining this to people. "No. I’m just... done with everything. I don’t want to live anymore. If you had hit me, it would’ve saved me the trouble."
Lucas blinked at her, completely stunned. Who even said stuff like that? Her tone was casual like she was talking about the weather.
The girl smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes. "If you help me die, I’ll even bless you in my soul form or something." She laughed, but it sounded hollow.
Lucas rubbed his face with both hands. This was insane. He stayed quiet for a long time, unsure what to do. His stomach growled again. Out of nowhere, he said, "I’m hungry. I was about to go get some donuts. Wanna come?"
The girl blinked, clearly caught off guard. "Huh?"
"I’m serious," Lucas said, turning back toward his car. "You can come with me. Eat something sweet. Then... I don’t know... decide again about dying later."
The girl stared at him like he had completely lost it. "You’re joking, right? I literally just told you I want to die."
Lucas shrugged. "And I literally just told you I’m hungry."
The girl opened her mouth to say something, then stopped. She blinked a few more times like she was checking if he was for real. "You... you’re weird."
"And you’re standing in the middle of the road asking strangers to run you over," Lucas said flatly. "So I guess we’re both weird."
The girl let out a breath that was half a laugh and half a sigh. "Fine... Whatever. I’ll come. I guess one last donut won’t hurt before I die."
Lucas smiled a little and pointed at the car. "Get in."
Without much thought, the girl opened the passenger side door and sat down.
Lucas got behind the wheel and started the car again. After a moment of silence, he glanced at her and said, "By the way... aren’t you scared I’m some kidnapper or something?"
The girl stared at the dashboard, then shrugged. "At this point, does it matter? Kidnapper, murderer, whatever... It’s all the same to me."
Lucas’s smile faded a little at that. "That’s... depressing," he muttered, focusing back on the road.
The girl leaned her head against the window, staring at the fading sunset. "Yeah... that’s kind of the point."
Lucas gripped the steering wheel tighter. After a few minutes of driving, he said quietly, "You know... even if life feels pointless right now... sometimes it gets better when you least expect it."
The girl gave a tired smile. "Maybe. But it’s exhausting to keep pretending like life has meaning. I mean... you have to keep filling it with something... all the time... and I’m just... tired."
Lucas nodded slowly. "That’s true... But sometimes... You don’t have to fill it all by yourself. Sometimes... other people do it for you."
The girl was quiet for a long moment.
Then she let out a short, surprised laugh. "No. I have given the chance to others for filling meaning in my life and got betrayed every single time."
Lucas looked at her seriously. "Wait... so... were you in like... a polygamous relationship or something?"
For a second, the girl froze. Then, out of nowhere, she started laughing. Not the fake, tired laugh she did earlier... but a loud, kind of crazy, almost real laugh. Tears appeared at the corner of her eyes as she clutched her stomach.
Lucas blinked, a bit surprised. "What? Why are you laughing? I’m serious."
The girl wiped her tears with the back of her hand and shook her head. "No... no... nothing like that. I wasn’t in a polygamous relationship." She let out a small giggle again before her face turned sad.
"I had one boyfriend," she said in a soft voice. "Just one. And a family that loved me... at least I thought they did." She stared down at her lap, her fingers playing with the hem of her shirt. "But... everything changed after the accident."
Lucas kept his eyes on the road but listened carefully.
"It was supposed to be a normal day," she whispered. "I was driving... my sister was with me. There was this truck that came out of nowhere... and..." She swallowed hard. "She... she died."
Lucas stayed quiet, not wanting to interrupt.
"After that... it was like... like everyone pressed a switch," she continued, her voice trembling.
