Chapter 232: Ch 232: The best kind of job

"I see. In that case, I do hope you come back safe and join me. The pay is not as much as the survey team, but it is solid. And there is no danger to face while standing here and welcoming the guests."

The front desk lady assured him as she handed Shuu a pass to go inside the waiting room for his turn.

Shuu felt thankful for her guidance and assistance, and he got up.

Rin’s hand grabbed his leg, and Shuu recalled his second purpose for coming to this place and applying here.

"Ah, that reminds me... is there a care center around? I need to put my son in a safe place while I take care of the interview."

Shuu asked the front desk worker, and she looked surprised to see Rin. But then she blinked, and understanding flashed across her eyes.

"We do have a day-care for our employees. But honestly, it would be better if you use the one beside this building. It is much better in terms of care and other facilities."

The woman assured him, and Shuu decided to take her word for it.

He took Rin to the daycare and paid the fee with the remaining money in his pocket he had somehow managed to save while shopping. It was only enough for one day, so Shuu had to earn at least something today in order to be able to afford food tomorrow.

"Rin, take care of yourself and keep out of trouble. I will come and get you soon."

Shuu promised Rin, and Rin nodded as he watched Shuu leave.

"Rin, how about you come with me to the back? I am sure your other friends would like to meet you as well. You can have all the fun with them." 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

The caretaker assured him, and Rin decided to follow her. But he also kept an eye on Shuu for as long as he could.

Finally, Shuu left and the doors closed behind him. It made Rin feel lonely, but he had to believe in Shuu and wait for him to come back.

__________

Shuu came back to the office as soon as he was done setting Rin up. There were a few more people in the room with him, and they all seemed to be waiting for their turns to be examined.

Everyone else except Shuu looked ripped and ready to tear anything apart with their hands. This was the type of dedication that was required to go inside a dungeon and come back alive.

So Shuu’s entry gained more than a few eyes, and people turned their heads toward him to take a look.

It felt unnerving, but Shuu kept his head raised as he took his seat.

The second he did, the inner office door opened and a good-looking esper exited it.

Shuu could immediately feel the aura of power around this man. He might be trying to suppress it, but his power was slowly leaking out of his vessel.

Everyone else around Shuu suddenly looked sick, and they dropped their heads under the pressure. But Shuu did not feel the same pressure as everyone else did.

Still, he decided to follow their lead and lower his head as well to show that he was affected by the esper’s power.

The esper ignored it all and stood in front of the small group. His eyes went over them all, but Shuu swore that they rested on top of his head for a few seconds longer before they moved on.

"So, are you all ready for your test? Not that it matters if you are ready or not. We will be entering a dungeon in a few minutes, so make sure you are mentally prepared."

The man spoke firmly as he looked around the room.

No one doubted or questioned this man’s authority. If anything, people seemed to be in awe of him and nodded with respect in their eyes.

It made the tall esper sigh in relief and look over everyone once more.

"Since you are all new here and might not know me, I will introduce myself. I am Yuri Blinskey, an esper, and from today onwards, your boss as well. My words will be final inside the dungeon, so make sure you follow them. Do you understand?"

The man asked, and everyone around Shuu nodded.

"We understand, boss. We will be on our best behaviour."

Everyone promised, and they finally left for their first dungeon session.

Shuu did his best to melt into the background. But his frame made it impossible to hide among these bulky men and not be seen.

Yuri Blinskey had not noticed him (or paid attention to him), but his secretary had certainly noticed. He was now looking at Shuu with narrowed eyes, and Shuu could feel another guide’s energy close by.

Shuu tried to flash a smile, but the frown that appeared on the secretary’s face looked annoyed and threatening.

’I... have a feeling it won’t be easy for me to handle this situation now. Still, I have to keep holding on. I don’t have a choice.’

That was what Shuu told himself, and with a nod, he decided to follow the group.

He kept feeling the guide’s eyes on him the whole time as he went about his business. But it was a lot harder to ignore than he expected.

Finally, they reached the dungeon gate, and people started to enter one by one. Shuu was one of the last people to head toward the gate, but before he entered, he felt someone suddenly grab his shoulder.

He turned around, only to see the secretary stopping him.

"Excuse me, but can I help you with something?"

Shuu asked in a calm voice, and the secretary looked taken aback by this at first. But then he gathered himself and nodded.

"There is something you can do for me, and that is to not step in here. I don’t think you are cut out for this line of work. So before you fail and get killed, you should head back."
