Chapter 489: Chapter 422: It’s Born! (Second Update)

Time moved like a snail, inching forward. Tong Airui and Yi Luowa’s tightly clenched hands were drenched in sweat, their gazes locked, the anxiety in their eyes mirrored in each other’s.

"Don’t be scared, I’m not in pain." Yi Luowa forced a faint smile.

Tong Airui nodded, "You don’t have to be scared either."

"Suction!" the lead surgeon called out.

Their hands tightened their grip once again.

The suction machine buzzed, and with each sound, Tong Airui felt his heart ache more and more.

"There’s one!"

"Duke Airui, time to cut the umbilical cord."

"..."

"Duke Airui?"

Jimo Shanshan lifted her gaze to look at Tong Airui. At that moment, he stood motionless like a statue. Even though Senior Sister called him, he didn’t respond.

"Fourth Brother, the baby is out! You need to cut the cord! Fourth Brother!"

Yi Luowa snapped out of it first, gently shifting their clenched hands, "Honey..."

Tong Airui looked at her but didn’t move.

Yi Luowa released her hand, and Tong Airui, still nervous, tightened his grip again.

Yi Luowa smiled, "The doctor wants you to cut the umbilical cord."

Only then did Tong Airui regain his composure, letting go of Yi Luowa’s hand and taking the scissors offered by the nurse.

The baby! He’s born! When did this happen? Why didn’t he hear the crying?

The baby! It’s their baby. He’s so tiny, cradled in the doctor’s two hands.

Tong Airui’s eyes turned red, and tears instantly blurred his vision.

"Cut here." The midwife guided his hand to the baby’s umbilical cord, "Duke Airui, quickly! There’s another baby still waiting to come out!"

Tong Airui was rattled by the urgency of the second delivery. With a sharp "snip," he cut the umbilical cord.

"Waaaahhh..." As the cord was severed, the baby finally let out a cry.

Yi Luowa’s tears also streamed down her cheeks.

Jimo Shanshan used gauze to wipe away her tears, "Fourth Sister-in-law, you should be happy, don’t cry."

Yi Luowa tugged at the corner of her mouth; she wanted to smile, but she couldn’t help feeling utterly overwhelmed.

"Boy or girl?" She held her curiosity in for ages, yet no one had revealed the baby’s gender. Yi Luowa couldn’t resist asking.

"Ah! I didn’t check." Tong Airui leaned over and glanced toward the other operating table, "Boy or girl?"

The midwife was cleaning the baby’s body. After looking down, she smiled and said, "It’s a boy!"

Tong Airui turned back to Yi Luowa, smiling, "It’s a boy, the little warrior of the Aldrich family. Honey, thank you for all your hard work."

Yi Luowa pressed her lips into a smile, "It wasn’t hard."

"Duke Airui, cut the umbilical cord."

This one came out so quickly!

Having gone through it once, Tong Airui wasn’t as nervous this time. He accepted the scissors and reached for the baby’s umbilical cord. He thought he’d stay calm, but when he purposely checked the baby’s gender, he couldn’t keep his composure.

"Honey, this one’s a girl!"

"Really?" Yi Luowa laughed joyfully. After carrying this burden for nine months, she could finally pass it along.

"Really!" Tong Airui’s face was beaming with an uncontrollable smile. With a sharp "snip," he cut the daughter’s umbilical cord. But this one didn’t cry.

Yi Luowa grew anxious; she wanted to see the baby.

Tong Airui nervously looked at the newborn as well, "Why isn’t she crying?"

"You should give her a little tap..."

"Don’t hit the baby!" Tong Airui and Yi Luowa simultaneously exclaimed.

The midwife hesitated, looking toward Senior Sister for guidance. Senior Sister frowned slightly.

Jimo Shanshan stepped closer and gave the baby’s bottom a light pat, "Sweetie, don’t keep us waiting. Cry, and once you do, we can all go out to see Grandpa and Grandma."

The little one let out a dissatisfied "Wah," finally crying out.

Her crying triggered the other baby to start crying as well.

When the people in the hallway heard the babies’ cries, the atmosphere erupted in excitement.

"Born!"

"They’re born!"

Yu clicked her tongue, "I told you earlier I heard crying, and you guys didn’t believe me. See, now both babies are crying."

"The cries sound different." Huo Li grasped Yi Weiyang’s hand tightly.

Yi Weiyang’s lips quirked up slightly; he wanted to smile, but his tears flowed uncontrollably.

Huo Li sniffled and wanted to find somewhere quiet to collect herself. However, when she turned her head, she saw Long Che and Tong Yao hugging each other tightly, crying.

Huo Li sighed. Are people getting sentimental as they age? Gaining grandchildren shouldn’t be moving you to tears—shouldn’t you be happy? Yet here these elders were, crying their hearts out!

"Plop" — a large tear fell onto her shoe.

Huo Li blinked rapidly. Whose tear was that?

"Plop" — another tear landed on her hand.

Huo Li tilted her chin upward and forcibly held back the third tear. "Luowa has given birth—it’s a joyful event! Everyone, stop crying. Let’s wait for the babies and Luowa to come out."

"They’re coming!" Yu was the first to hear footsteps.

Everyone surged forward. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Ni Lu pulled Long Che and Tong Yao forward, smiling, "Your grandchildren — you two look first!"

Long Che grinned, "It’s a grandson and a granddaughter!"

"How do you know?" Ni Lu asked, puzzled.

"Huo Li was right—the cries sounded different." Long Che said, watching the door to the operating room.

At last, the operating room door swung open, and two midwives came out holding the two little ones, "Congratulations to the Prime Minister, congratulations to the Prime Minister’s wife! Madam Luowa has given birth to dragon-phoenix twins!"

Long Che hugged Tong Yao tightly, grinning, "I knew it! Luowa would give me a granddaughter!"

Yi Weiyang wasn’t as composed as Long Che. He immediately asked, "How’s Luowa?"

The midwife smiled, "The mother and both babies are doing well. Madam Luowa will come out in another twenty minutes."

Yi Weiyang sighed deeply with relief.

Smiles spread across everyone’s faces.

Tong Yao and Long Che, reassured that their daughter-in-law and grandchildren were okay, finally took the children from the midwives.

Long Che looked at the pink-wrapped baby in his arms and laughed, "This one must be the girl!"

The midwife apologetically glanced at Long Che, "It was hectic earlier—we only realized after wrapping them up that we didn’t follow your instructions."

Long Che paused, furrowing his brows, "They’re packaged wrong?"

"Yes." The midwife peeked at him nervously, "The Prime Minister’s wife is holding the girl."

Long Che immediately ducked over to Tong Yao, "Switch!"

"No way!" Tong Yao tightened her grip on her granddaughter, dodging him. Tenderly, she lifted the corner of the blanket to peek at the baby. The little one, bothered by the light, fluttered her curly lashes briefly before letting out a disgruntled cry.

"Oh, my sweet baby girl, don’t cry, don’t cry." Tong Yao gently rocked her.

Everyone crowded around.

"Her lashes are so long already!"

"Look at that cute little nose!"

"Beautiful! She looks like Luowa!"

"Looks like Airui!"

"Whichever parent she resembles, she’s a tiny beauty!"

Everyone surrounded Tong Yao, admiring the princess. Uncle Che couldn’t hide his delight; he lifted the corner of the blanket covering the baby boy in his arms and frowned. "This one’s ugly!"

"If he’s ugly, let me hold him!" Ni Lu huffed, reaching for the baby. "You’re so smug! This boy looks handsome! If you think he’s ugly, I’ll take him home!"

"He’s my grandson! What do you mean ’take him home’?!" Long Che hugged the baby protectively and moved closer to Yi Weiyang, "You want to see your grandson?"

Yi Weiyang’s lips twitched slightly, "I’ll take a look if you show him; if not, forget it. Right now, I urgently want to see Luowa—she must have been scared."

"Then no, you can’t see him!" Long Che huffed back.

Huo Li chuckled as she approached, "If he won’t look, I will. These little cuties belong to Piggy Baobao. Oh my, this little one looks even more adorable!"

"Yes, yes, these two babies inherited all their parents’ best features."

Madam Jing Ya chimed in with a smile.

Yu squinted and darted her gaze between the boy and girl, giggling, "When they grow up, if Dad takes them out, people will say, ’You two must be father and child!’ And if Mom does, everyone will say, ’You must be mother and child!’"

Mi Chenxuan laughed, "Our family’s Yu just said a whole bunch of nonsense, but her main point was: These twin babies look both like Fourth Brother and Fourth Sister-in-law!"

Connie nodded in agreement, "I think they look like both parents too."

"Ugh—" Amid the sea of compliments, an unpleasant gagging sound cut through.

Everyone’s eyes immediately turned to the source.

Tong Yao looked at her daughter with wide eyes.

Even Long Che was slightly stunned.

You Jia, looking puzzled, held Ai Ni up, "Honey, are you okay?"

Ai Ni pinched her nose, "They must not have cleaned the babies properly—I smell blood!"

Long Che sniffed the air.

Tong Yao sniffed the air as well.

"There’s no smell of blood!" Tong Yao looked incredulously at her daughter, "Ai Ni, are you... expecting?"
