Chapter 46: Another close combat mage

The spell "swift feet" was a spell that was similar to the lightning cage of the lightning element in the sense that it would only disappear when the mage wanted it to.

While the lightning cage allowed a lightning mage to lock a target in place and was still able to cast other spells, swift feet would cover the Mage’s feet in some sort of boots which were made of mana and would increase the movement speed of that mage greatly.

The girl who was fighting Laura at the moment was proof of the spell’s usefulness. And just like Lightning Cage, the Mana Boots would not disappear as long as the girl still had mana to sustain it, and she could still use other spells with the two interrupting each other.

Still, the girl’s action had left everyone in a daze. Even the teachers and Laura, her opponent, were stunned. They didn’t expect her to run toward Laura instead. After all, most wind mages used this spell as a means of escaping dangerous situations and not to rush towards enemies.

Alex thought of his fighting style of engaging magic beasts in close combat and how different it was from the fighting style of the other students, only this wind mage had a similar fighting style to his.

He began to have a better impression of the girl and was interested in what would happen next.

Meanwhile, Laura had been surprised to see the girl running toward her, but her expression was still calm as she completed the star pattern and sent another huge fireball flying toward her opponent.

Swoosh!

The fireball flew through the air at a fast speed, but the wind mage dodged like a yellow flash of light and continued to head toward Laura.

The fireball continued and crashed into the ground in the distance, causing the ring to tremble.

As for the wind mage, she was getting closer and closer to Laura. At their current distance, she would reach Laura before the latter completed another star pattern!

Laura had also noticed this, but she still summoned her stars regardless. The five blazing stars were like small fire stars above; they didn’t connect and just floated there.

The wind mage was already in front of her.

The feet of the wind mage slid across the floor of the ring as she came to a stop in front of Laura before throwing... a punch.

Everyone "..."

A punch? Which mage in their right senses would use a punch against another mage?!

While the students felt that it was a stupid move, Alex and the surrounding teachers didn’t think so. Rather, they felt that it was a rather smart move. Adding up the momentum of the speed at which she had approached Laura, a simple punch might be able to knock out some Adept mages.

Paw!

The fist of the wind mage created a small explosive sound in the wind as she punched out at Laura. Now that she had stopped running, Laura was able to see her movements clearly as she wasn’t a blur anymore.

Additionally, the speed at which she threw her punch wasn’t as fast as her legs when running, so Laura was able to react and jump to the side, dodging the punch completely.

The girl immediately reacted and dashed toward Laura again, catching up before Laura could balance herself. Immediately after she reached Laura, she would attack with her hands, but Laura was always able to dodge every hit.

Although the girl’s movement speed was fast, it only applied to when she was running and not the rest of her body. One could easily see that Laura was a bit faster than her opponent in terms of body movement.

This was a difference in sub-stages that the girl was trying to cover up with swift feet.

The fight continued like that for the following minutes. The wind mage chased after Laura every time Laura tried to move away and would then attack with either a slap or a punch. While Laura wasn’t fast enough to keep the distance, she was always able to react to the girl’s attack and avoid getting hit.

This left the spectators in awe.

"Is...is throwing punches really that effective?"

"I knew that mages get stronger bodies and become faster as they advance in rank, but can it really reach the point of ignoring spells?"

"Is goddess Laura going to lose?"

"Impossible, goddess Laura can’t lose. Can’t you see she’s just playing around?"

"Ah, now that you say it, it does look like that."

"Right? Her opponent is already sweating, but she’s still calm!"

"Hahaha, goddess Laura must be giving her a chance to show her skill. How considerate."

The students chatted loudly as they watched the fight, the same scene played over and over again, but each time was more exciting than the last time; every Alex was interested and hoped that the girl would land at least one hit on Laura.

After almost ten minutes of avoiding her opponent’s attack, Laura was finally fed up. It wasn’t that she was playing with the other party; she really couldn’t do anything else!

How was she supposed to fight back when her opponent would not give her the chance to fast a spell?! It was very vexing.

As for why she looked calm even though she was really struggling, it was because she was doing her best to keep up her image.

She was a genius, the hope of the Dragonic magic academy, and she couldn’t show a struggling expression in a small competition like this!

"That’s enough!" Laura suddenly snorted. Her feet had just landed on the ground when the wind mage appeared in front of her with a palm flying toward Laura.

This time, Laura didn’t dodge but took the palm attack with her right hand.

During their last exchange, she had made sure to move in circles around the wind mage and make sure that the latter only needed to turn her body to attack.

Because of this, there wasn’t much momentum behind this palm.

Bam!

Both of their palms pressed together, and Laura used the opportunity to leap into the air while jumping backwards; she anticipated that her opponent would follow her.

And she did! The wind mage ran after Laura and was ready to attack again once she reached the ground.

’Idiot.’ Laura thought with a smirk.

The red stars that had been floating behind her for the past minutes suddenly began to move while she was still in mid-air; in less than two breaths, they connected into a complete star pattern!

"Flare," Laura called out softly, her feet landing gracefully on the ground at this moment.

Balls of flames that were the size of oranges appeared around Laura, almost instantly, before spreading out in a circular formation.

Even the size of her flare was bigger than that of the other fire mages!

The eyes of the spectators lit up when they saw this, Goddess Laura was about to act!

Her opponent, the wind mage, also realised that she had been tricked. A panicking expression covered her face as she immediately turned around, trying to run away.

But it was too late, as one of the flares was already beside her.

"Explode!"

With the command from Laura, the balls of flame that had spread out in all directions exploded in succession. Surrounding Laura in a ring of explosions with her at the center and unaffected.

It was a spectacular scene.

Her opponent had been affected by the explosions and was sent flying with her cloak, bringing out smoke. One of the teachers moved and caught her before she could crash into the ground.

"Student number one wins!"
