Chapter 61: Chapter 61: I’ll Just Take It As You Miss Me

Cole Kane watched her retreating figure, his hands clenched into fists, veins bulging on their backs.

"I’m not seeing things, am I? Did the screenwriter just hit Mr. Kane?"

"...I can confirm. You’re not seeing things."

"Wow, amazing. The screenwriter isn’t into the rich and handsome Mr. Kane?"

"..."

The crew members muttered amongst themselves, stunned, as they ate the afternoon tea Cole Kane had treated them to.

Just moments ago, Cole Kane had asked them to take good care of Nina Thorne in the future.

They had even speculated that Cole Kane was trying to woo Nina Thorne.

’Looking at the situation now, does this mean we should spit the food back out?’

Jessica Jenkins was even more stunned.

This made her even more certain that something was going on between them.

Otherwise, given Cole Kane’s status, what woman would dare to lay a hand on him?

Jessica Jenkins’s shoulders slumped in disappointment. ’Damn it, I’ve lost my chance.’

...

Nina Thorne went to the restroom and splashed some water on her face.

A WeChat message arrived from Justin Kane: [Everything going well? Miss me?]

Nina Thorne froze.

She automatically ignored the second part of his question. Recalling what had just happened, she tapped out a reply on her phone: [So-so.]

It was unclear if her "so-so" referred to work or to whether she missed him.

Justin Kane looked at the two words, and the corner of his lip curved up slightly. Most of his earlier resentment had already dissipated. [I’ll just assume that means you miss me. Tell me, did something happen?]

Nina Thorne fell into deep thought. Her feelings for Justin Kane were complicated.

’Leaving aside whether I like him or not, just based on the relationship between the Kane and Thorne families, Justin Kane has always been like a big brother to me.’

’In the past, even though he was cold as ice to me, he would still give me birthday presents and put food on my plate during family dinners.’

’When I was young and naive, with a fiery temper that often got me into fights with other kids, he would help me solve the problems, pat my head, and tell me I’d done a great job.’

’Now we’re husband and wife. As a husband, Justin Kane is responsible, gentle, and attentive to me—definitely more than qualified.’

’But I always feel like there’s something between us.’

’Something I can’t quite put my finger on, something inexplicable...’

Nina Thorne thought for a moment, then sent a message: [It’s really nothing, don’t worry.]

’He’s thousands of miles away; no need to make him worry.’

...

Fortunately, the incident didn’t affect the rest of the shoot.

Although everyone was curious about her relationship with Cole Kane for the next few days, no one dared to ask.

After all, they figured that if she could hit Cole Kane and get away with it, their relationship must be anything but simple.

However, Cole Kane didn’t show up for the next three days, and the speculation gradually died down.

For those three days, she followed the film crew, making on-the-spot script revisions, and then went back to her room to continue refining the script as the plot evolved.

She had very little contact with Justin Kane, just a few WeChat messages. Even their phone calls were brief.

During filming that day, a section of dialogue Nina Thorne had written was a bit long. The male actor couldn’t memorize it after several tries, kept forgetting his lines, and was holding up the shoot.

He went to Nina Thorne and demanded she change the lines. Nina Thorne refused. "These are already the revised lines."

The actor couldn’t take it and his tone turned nasty. "What normal person has lines this long? Can’t you just change them a little? Besides, it’s affecting my emotional performance."

Nina Thorne retorted sharply, "I’ve already discussed the lines with the director. They can’t be changed. It would ruin the flavor of the scene. If you think this is affecting your emotional performance, you should consider whether the problem is with your own professionalism."

"What did you say?!"

The actor flew into a rage. "Don’t think I’m afraid of you just because you’ve hooked up with Mr. Kane!"

"I was wondering how a nobody screenwriter like you could get such a great team to shoot your script. So you just pulled some strings."

"Pah! So shameless!"

The actor spat a large glob of saliva near her feet.

Nina Thorne’s expression turned icy. "A single line is enough to make you this upset and start spewing profanities. In the future, even if you rely on connections, you won’t get very far in this industry."

Jessica Jenkins rushed over to shield her. "Hey, don’t you think you’re going too far? It’s just one line. Why don’t you just memorize it properly? What gives you the right to curse at people?"

Cody Kirk held the actor back, trying to prevent a bigger conflict.

But the actor was like a lit firecracker, his curses getting uglier. "Even if I quit this business, I’d still be better than a slut like you."

"To put it nicely, you’re a screenwriter. To put it bluntly, you’re just a slut who sleeps her way to the top!"

The actor’s face was red as he hurled insults.

Nina Thorne had never heard such filthy language in her entire life. With her already short temper, she couldn’t take it anymore. She grabbed a folder from the table and threw it at him.

"You’d better watch your mouth! If you dare to spout any more nonsense, I can sue you for slander."

The corner of the folder hit the actor on the forehead. The pain made him roar like a maddened lion, and he lunged toward Nina Thorne.

Jessica Jenkins gasped, instinctively shutting her eyes and stepping in front of Nina Thorne, spreading her arms to protect her.

Nina Thorne froze, her heart leaping into her throat.

Suddenly, a figure shot out from behind Nina Thorne and sent the actor flying with a single kick.

The newcomer was none other than Cole Kane.

"Are you okay?" Cole Kane asked Nina Thorne nervously, as if the fact she had hit him the other day had never happened.

Nina Thorne looked at him and frowned, a sense of resistance welling up inside her. She shook her head. "Why are you here again?"

Cole Kane said, his voice full of concern, "If I hadn’t come, who knows what would have happened today."

Before Nina Thorne could say anything...

Just then, the actor scrambled to his feet, cursing under his breath. The moment he saw it was Cole Kane, most of his aggressive bluster vanished.

"M-Mr. Kane." He stammered, bowing his head, looking utterly terrified.

"What were you trying to do just now? You dare to lay a hand on my person? Do you have a death wish?" Cole Kane snarled, his presence overpowering.

Everyone on set was watching them.

Hearing Cole Kane say that, and seeing that he had just helped her, Nina Thorne barely managed to suppress the urge to talk back to him.

The actor was already trembling with fear, all of his earlier arrogance gone. He bowed and scraped, repeatedly apologizing and saying he had just lost his temper.

Director Aldridge sternly reprimanded him and threatened to replace him if he couldn’t do the job.

The actor kept his head down, not daring to breathe too loudly.

Cole Kane commanded the actor in a harsh voice, "Apologize to her."

The actor didn’t dare to disobey. He gave Nina Thorne a ninety-degree bow and apologized, "I’m sorry, Ms. Screenwriter."

"Forget it. I was also in the wrong just now." Nina Thorne didn’t want to delay the shoot any further, and since he hadn’t caused her any actual physical harm, she let it go.

Jessica Jenkins, who had been looking at Cole Kane with a starstruck expression, rolled her eyes in disgust at the actor’s behavior.

’What a pathetic coward, bullying the weak and fearing the strong.’

Nina Thorne pulled her close. She hadn’t expected Jessica to stand up for her in that situation.

"Thank you," Nina Thorne said softly.

Jessica Jenkins beamed. "What’s there to thank me for? I plan on sticking with you from now on, Ms. Screenwriter!"

Nina Thorne smiled and nodded. ’If I have a good script in the future, I’ll definitely look for her.’

Filming proceeded normally after that.

Nina Thorne called Cole Kane over to a quiet spot away from the set, her expression turning cold again. "What are you doing here?"

"I came to see you," Cole Kane said, looking at her with heartache. "Filming on set is tough. I was worried about you. Look, you’ve gotten thinner..."

He reached out, wanting to touch Nina Thorne’s face.

Nina Thorne glared at him coldly.

He could only drop his hand resentfully. "I know you won’t forgive me right away. It’s okay. I can wait."

Nina Thorne’s face was full of impatience. "Cole Kane, I’ve told you, there’s no longer a chance for us. And I’m telling you again, I’m married."

Cole Kane didn’t believe her at all. "We only broke up less than two months ago, you think I’d believe you? Even if you don’t love me anymore and want to lie to get rid of me, you shouldn’t use an excuse like that."

Nina Thorne sneered inwardly. ’He finds *this* hard to accept?’

’What’s he going to do, cry, on the day he finds out I’ve become his sister-in-law?’

"I have nothing more to say to you. I’m not grateful for what happened today, either. You should go. Don’t come back," Nina Thorne said coldly. Not wanting to waste any more words on him, she turned to go back to the set.

Cole Kane watched her leave for a moment before his phone rang. It was Serena Kane. "Second Brother, how did your explanation to Nina Thorne go?"

"Does she still want me to leave before she’ll make up with you?"

Cole Kane pinched the bridge of his nose, looking exhausted. "Serena, I’ll handle things with Nina Thorne. Don’t worry."

He hung up, not wanting to hear anything else from Serena Kane.

Although Serena had been adamant that day that Nina Thorne was involved in her going abroad three years ago...

...he inexplicably believed Nina Thorne, feeling that Serena was hiding something from him.

...

「8:00 PM.」

Nina Thorne finally had a moment of free time. She realized it had been a while since she’d had a proper conversation with Justin Kane. ’Even if he has someone he likes, we’re still husband and wife...’

So she called Justin Kane, only to be met with a robotic female voice: "We’re sorry, the number you have dialed is temporarily unavailable..."

After hanging up, Nina Thorne sent him a WeChat message: "Are you busy? I couldn’t get through to your phone."

She sent a few more messages. Just as she put her phone down, there was a knock on the door.

She walked over, saw it was Jessica Jenkins through the peephole, and opened the door. "What’s up?"

"We don’t have to film tonight for once. Want to go out for a walk?" Jessica Jenkins’s eyes were big and round, pretty and playful.

They had been getting along quite well lately.

Nina Thorne didn’t really want to go out, but she couldn’t resist Jessica Jenkins’s persistent coaxing, so she agreed.

The nightlife in Vistara was beautiful, the lights enchanting and romantic.

The night market was especially bustling and lively. The two of them wandered around for two hours and ate plenty of snacks.

Nina Thorne was naturally thin and never gained weight no matter what she ate. Jessica Jenkins, on the other hand, was miserably worried that her face would look bloated on camera tomorrow, so she dragged Nina Thorne back on foot.

As they were passing through a deserted street, almost back at the hotel...

...several tall, burly drunkards suddenly appeared and surrounded them. "Well, look at these hot little things. How about you keep us company tonight?"

"Get away from us."

"What do you want? Go away!"

Nina Thorne and Jessica Jenkins struggled fiercely, but they were no match for the men’s strength and were instantly dragged away.

"Don’t worry, we’ll take real good care of you, ladies, hahaha..."

Nina Thorne knew this was bad. She was terrified.

Unfortunately, the street was deserted, with no people or cars around.

By now, Jessica Jenkins was so scared she had gone limp, her face pale as a sheet, unable to utter a single word.

Just as Nina Thorne was at a loss, thinking this was the end for them, a furious voice suddenly rang out: "Let go of her."

One of the drunks cursed, "Damn it, someone’s here to meddle. Kill him!"

Nina Thorne looked over, and her brow furrowed slightly when she saw who it was.

’It’s him again. Cole Kane.’

Just then, two of the large men charged at Cole Kane, but he took them down in a couple of moves.

Seeing this, the other two drunkards grew fearful.

Cole Kane advanced on them step by step. "Let them go!"

The two drunks exchanged a look, quickly released the women, and bolted, abandoning their two fallen companions.

Jessica Jenkins collapsed to the ground, terrified, and burst into tears with a WAIL.

Nina Thorne was also trembling all over. She stared blankly as Cole Kane walked up to her, her lips trembling, unable to speak for a long moment.

Cole Kane looked at her with heartache and pulled her into a hug. "Don’t worry, it’s okay now. I’m here..."

Nina Thorne tried to push him away but found she didn’t have a shred of strength left.

At the same time, a pair of blinding headlights approached and stopped about two meters away.

Nina Thorne squinted against the light and then saw a tall, slender figure get out of the car.

The figure was noble and elegant. He stood there, watching Nina Thorne and Cole Kane embracing, his handsome face grim, his eyes sinister and piercing, and the aura around him as cold as a winter frost.

As Nina Thorne gradually made out his face, she froze in shock.

’Ju...’

’Justin Kane!’
