Being Dumped by My EX, I Marriied His Older Brother-Chapter 60: Your Apology is Worthless
"I was just here on a business trip and happened to be staying here too." Cole Kane walked up to Nina Thorne, his eyes filled with an unyielding tenderness.
When Jessica Jenkins saw Cole Kane, she couldn’t help but think, ’Wow, he’s handsome.’
She glanced between them, sensing their relationship was anything but ordinary, and tactfully stepped aside to wait for Nina Thorne.
After all, she wasn’t sure what was going on between them and didn’t feel right leaving Nina Thorne alone.
"Nina Thorne," Cole Kane said, looking at her cold expression as he reached out to grab her.
She dodged him sharply and took two steps back, putting a safe distance between them.
Staring at him coldly, she said with hostility, "Don’t touch me. We’re not close."
Cole Kane gave a helpless laugh, as if surrendering. "Nina Thorne, I admit it, you’ve beaten me. I give up. Can you please calm down? Let’s make up, okay?"
Nina Thorne suddenly couldn’t be bothered to speak to him anymore. ’What an arrogant, self-important egomaniac.’
’Does he still think I’m just throwing a tantrum?’
"Fine."
Nina Thorne said coldly, "Listen closely. Stay away from me, or I won’t drop the lawsuit."
Previously, in order to annul the engagement, the condition Nina Thorne had given was that she wouldn’t press charges for him plagiarizing her manuscript and drugging her.
They had finally managed to sign the annulment agreement after that.
After she finished speaking, she turned and started to walk away.
But Cole Kane grabbed her hand, his voice urgent. "Nina Thorne, do you have to be so heartless to me?"
Nina Thorne flung his hand off as if she’d been touched by a dung beetle, frantically brushing the spot he had touched.
She looked at him with utter disgust. "Don’t come near me again, or I’ll call the police."
Cole Kane stood there, stunned. Watching her series of disgusted actions, his expression turned uglier than if he’d swallowed a dead cockroach. All he could do was watch as Nina Thorne entered the hotel.
...
Inside the elevator, Jessica Jenkins asked cautiously, "I think that was the Second Young Master Kane. Nina, what... what’s your relationship with him?"
Nina Thorne stared at the elevator doors and said flatly, "No relationship."
Jessica Jenkins’s eyes lit up. ’Does that mean I have a chance?’
She chirped, "Nina, are you close with him?"
"Not at all."
Jessica Jenkins could tell she didn’t want to talk, so she suppressed the urge to ask for Cole Kane’s contact information.
After returning to her room, Nina Thorne began to suspect Cole Kane’s motives for being there.
The more she thought about it, the more uneasy she felt, so she picked up her phone and called Justin Kane.
"Finally remembered me?" The moment he answered, his voice was a low, mocking chuckle.
But Justin Kane’s magnetic voice sounded even more pleasant and deep over the phone, like the rich low notes of a cello.
’But I sent him a message on WeChat right after I arrived yesterday.’
Nina Thorne explained, "We had a production meeting today, so it was a bit busy. Then everyone had dinner together, so it got a little late..."
She paused, realizing she was saying a bit too much and worried Justin Kane would find it annoying. She then asked, "Am I interrupting your rest?"
After all, it was already ten o’clock at night.
On the other end, Justin Kane stood on his balcony. His long fingers held the phone, his tall frame clad in a white shirt tucked into black trousers. He stood against the night, his gaze merging with the darkness, his entire being steeped in a thick layer of coolness.
He looked just like a statue, waiting for his wife.
After a moment of silence, his voice finally came, soft and low.
"A call from you is never an interruption."
Justin Kane exhaled a puff of pale smoke, obscuring the emotion in his eyes.
Hearing the faint sound of the wind on his end, accompanied by his teasing voice, Nina Thorne’s expression remained calm. "That’s good."
If this had been the past, she might have blushed at his words, wondering if he liked her even a tiny bit.
But ever since she found out the watch was something he intended to give to someone he loved five years ago, she had cured herself of such wishful thinking.
’A relationship is too crowded with three people.’
’Besides, what she felt for him wasn’t necessarily love.’
With that thought, Nina Thorne got straight to the point. "I saw Cole Kane tonight."
Justin Kane’s heart skipped a beat. His brows knitted together sharply, and his knuckles turned white as he gripped the phone. "He went to find you?"
Nina Thorne replied, "I don’t know. He said he was on a business trip. I was just about to ask you if that’s true."
Hearing this, the frosty look on Justin Kane’s face softened slightly.
’As long as they didn’t arrange to meet, it’s fine.’
’It doesn’t matter if Nina Thorne doesn’t love him now. It doesn’t even matter if she still loves Cole Kane.’
’He could wait.’
’But he would not allow Nina Thorne to meet with Cole Kane privately behind his back.’
"I’ll look into it," Justin Kane said, his voice hoarse.
Nina Thorne noticed something was wrong with his voice and asked out of wifely concern, "What’s wrong with your throat? Are you not feeling well?"
There were a few seconds of silence on the other end before he said, "It’s nothing."
Nina Thorne hummed in acknowledgment. "Okay, I’m hanging up then."
Hearing her move, Justin Kane spoke up urgently, "Nina Thorne."
Nina Thorne paused her movement to hang up and brought the phone back to her ear. "What is it?"
Justin Kane hesitated for a few seconds. "Do you know what’s most important between a husband and wife?"
Nina Thorne was taken aback. "What is it?"
Justin Kane’s voice was gentle. "Staying together."
Listening to the faint sounds of his breathing and the wind through the phone, Nina Thorne’s face grew slightly warm.
’Does he mean he wants to stay with me forever?’
’Or does he mean something else?’
She couldn’t figure it out and wanted to ask him to clarify.
Justin Kane’s deep voice came through again. "It’s late. Go to sleep."
After the call ended, Nina Thorne still wanted to ask him for clarification. She wanted to ask who the person he loved was, and whether he really wanted to be with her forever.
She summoned her courage and prepared to send him a WeChat message, but after typing only a few words, her resolve was broken by a text from an unknown number.
She opened the text message.
[I know you’re still mad at me, but Nina Thorne, I will do my best to earn your forgiveness.]
She knew at a glance it was from Cole Kane.
Lately, Cole Kane had been using who knows how many different numbers to call and text her.
She suddenly felt disgusted, tossed her phone aside with the screen off, and turned off the lights to sleep.
’Some things are better asked in person anyway.’
...
The next day, the actors continued their in-depth script study.
Nina Thorne continued to polish the script and refine the lines. No one knew she was the heiress of the Thorne Family, so she received no special treatment.
This was exactly what she wanted.
Once the art department, lighting crew, and everyone else were ready, on the third day, the production team officially assembled for the start-of-filming ceremony.
After the production team took a group photo, a commotion suddenly erupted nearby.
A black luxury car pulled up in front of them, followed by a food truck.
Nina Thorne had no interest in looking. The blazing sun was making her flustered and hot, and she was about to walk to a shadier spot.
"Nina, look! It’s the Second Young Master Kane!" Jessica Jenkins suddenly grabbed her arm excitedly, shaking it gently.
Nina Thorne was already hot, and the shaking was making her dizzy.
She turned her head and saw Cole Kane talking to Director Aldridge. She didn’t know what was said, but a multitude of gazes suddenly turned toward her.
Those stares filled Nina Thorne with disgust.
Jessica Jenkins whispered in a thrilled voice, "Nina, why do you think the Second Young Master Kane came to our set?"
"You don’t think... he came for me, do you?"
Jessica Jenkins gazed dreamily in Cole Kane’s direction.
Suddenly, Cole Kane walked toward them with his hands behind his back. Jessica Jenkins was so nervous she started to tremble, her eyes sparkling.
"Second Young Master Kane, you..."
Jessica Jenkins looked at the approaching Cole Kane, but before she could finish, he cut her off. "Excuse me, please move."
The smile vanished from Jessica Jenkins’s face in an instant, and she walked away dejectedly.
’Okay, so I’ve been watching too many idol dramas.’
Standing under the hot sun and facing everyone’s stares, Nina Thorne frowned and asked impatiently, "What kind of stunt are you pulling now?"
Cole Kane suddenly brought a large bouquet of jasmine out from behind his back and held it out to her. "These are for you. I know jasmine is your favorite."
The scent of jasmine wafted over, and the flowers were beautiful to behold.
But to Nina Thorne, they were a glaring, sarcastic reminder.
With a cold face, Nina Thorne looked at him as if he were an idiot. "Are you sick in the head?"
Cole Kane said with deep affection, "Nina Thorne, I know I’ve done a lot of things in the past that made you unhappy. I realize I was wrong. You wanted to annul the engagement, and I agreed."
"But starting today, I’m going to pursue you again, until you agree to be with me once more."
A blaze of anger flared up in Nina Thorne. She slapped the flowers out of his hand and said coldly, "I told you, stay away from me!"
Cole Kane was shocked. "Nina Thorne, these are your favorite flowers."
Nina Thorne kicked the flowers away and sneered, "Who told you I like jasmine? The one who likes jasmine is Serena Kane, not me."
"How is that possible?" Cole Kane just assumed Nina Thorne was speaking out of anger. "For the past five years, I’ve given you jasmine, and you clearly loved them. You never said you didn’t."
The sunlight stung Nina Thorne’s eyes, making it almost impossible to keep them open. The man in front of her seemed more and more like a joke.
Five years ago, when Nina Thorne and Serena Kane first met, Serena had acted as if they were old friends, calling her Nina Thorne with every other breath.
Serena Kane was gentle and sweet-looking to begin with, which made her very likable.
Because of her relationship with Cole Kane, Nina Thorne was especially warm to Serena Kane and genuinely wanted to be friends with her.
On Serena’s birthday, Nina Thorne gave her red roses, but Serena complained tearfully to Cole Kane, saying that Nina knew she liked pure white jasmine and had deliberately given her red roses instead.
Nina Thorne was only eighteen that year, and Cole Kane demanded that she apologize to Serena Kane.
Afraid of losing Cole Kane, she obediently apologized.
But from then on, Cole Kane sent her jasmine every year. Over time, he actually came to believe that she was the one who liked them.
’Five years, and he never once paid attention.’
Nina Thorne looked at Cole Kane and let out a cold laugh. "Cole Kane, you can’t even remember what I like. The only person on your mind is your dear Serena. For her sake, haven’t you done enough outrageous things to me?"
"And now you’re telling me you know you were wrong? Let me tell you, it just makes me sick!"
With that, Nina Thorne raised her hand and slapped him across the face. That was for coming to the set today and embarrassing her!
SLAP!
Another slap!
This one was for her trampled self-respect during those miserable five years.
The crowd was far away, so although they couldn’t hear what was being said, they were shocked to see Nina Thorne hit Cole Kane.
And she’d hit him twice.
’That’s a member of the Kane Family!’
’Nina Thorne is way too bold!’
"You owed me that."
Nina Thorne’s hand was numb from the slaps, but she wanted to hit him again. She raised her arm high, but Cole Kane grabbed it tightly, his reddened face staring at her.
"Nina Thorne, do you have to do this in front of so many people?"
Nina Thorne struggled to shake him off and warned coldly, "If you still have any sense of shame, then stay away from me."
"Cole Kane, your apology is worthless to me."
Nina Thorne delivered her cold final words and turned to leave.
As far as she was concerned, Cole Kane had died the day he stood her up for their marriage registration...
