Chapter 221: Still not a fox

The tribe leader saw everyone looking at him and scoffed.

"I have been the leader for this fox clan for over a hundred years, and you say I am not a fox. If I’m not a fox, why hasn’t anyone found anything? You accuse me. What evidence do you have?"

"I do not need evidence. You are not my leader. It is up to them to decide. I can smell the difference between you and them. If they cannot, then they need to ask themselves why."

Uri had no intention of arguing with this tribe leader. Failan had asked them for help. He was willing to provide it, but he had to do it on his own terms.

At the beginning, he only thought of helping to get the fabrics that Visha wanted. Now, knowing that their tribe leader wasn’t a fox, he had the idea of assimilating some of the foxes into the tribe.

Xeno and Visha caught his thoughts in an instant. They knew what he wanted to do, and they fully supported it.

"As for anything else," Uri continued. "Give me a reason. You say mates cannot have more than one partner. Why?"

The abrupt change in topic caught everyone’s attention. Uri was as cold as ice. Whether they believed him or not was entirely up to them. He would not give them a reason for his statement. They should be the ones to make their decision.

"Don’t avoid it. You just claimed I wasn’t a fox. Then you tell me, what am I? If you can tell me that, then I’ll tell you why."

"Are you sure?" Uri’s eyes were cold. There was no emotion in them as they looked at the tribe leader.

"Go ahead."

"A Dhole. A dhole wearing a fox’s skin."

The trio had been staring at the tribe leader. Visha and Xeno didn’t have the sensitive sense of smell that Uri had. It had gotten better, but Uri’s sense of smell had always been the best of the three.

They saw the flicker in the tribe leader’s eye and the twitch of his lip. They knew what Uri said was correct. And they weren’t the only ones to see it. Failan, who had been watching the tribe leader the entire time, saw it.

"You...!" he exclaimed when he saw it change. Then he started to laugh. It was the kind of laugh where you realize something unbelievable had happened.

The area was silent except for the crazed laugh of Failan. His laughter soon turned into crying.

Not everyone understood why he was acting like this. There are some who caught the tribe leaders’ expression. Those who didn’t think he had gone crazy for some reason.

When he finally released all his pent-up emotion, he didn’t curse the tribe leader. Instead, he walked over to the beastman and female who had held him up earlier. He kissed the female hard, before kissing the man too. He pulled both of them over to Uri, Visha, and Xeno.

"We wish to leave the fox clan. Could you take us in?"

He didn’t ask the other two what they wanted to do. This was something they had spoken about multiple times. They wanted to leave the fox clan but had nowhere to go. Now, with the trio being mates, he wanted to take a chance on them.

He had seen through the tribe leader. Maybe he was the only one who noticed, but he didn’t care. What he wanted now was to get away from these people. He would take his things and leave.

"You may join."

Others around them gasped. No one expected that they would willingly leave the fox clan. And no one expected that another tribe would take them in so readily.

Joining another tribe had never been that simple.

"They can’t leave. I am their leader, and I say they can’t leave. Is your tribe leader willing to accept them? This is disrespectful to your leader. You dare take in people for the tribe?"

The crowd murmured, and the fox clan leader put on a smug look. Failan’s face went pale. He hadn’t thought about the issue of tribe leaders. He only wanted to leave the fox clan. He gripped the two people’s hands tighter.

He had already offended the tribe leader; he would never allow them to go back to the tribe to face his wrath.

"You want me to ask my tribe leader?" Uri raised an eyebrow.

"Of course. You cannot speak for your leader. Are you sure they are willing to take in such people?"

"Such people? What’s wrong with them? They’re looking for a new home for themselves. They want to live freely and be able to love as they choose. Why do you call them such people?"

Visha cut in. Her voice was loud and authoritative.

"Such people are welcome in our tribe. Don’t think I don’t know you’re avoiding the topic of why they can’t be together. You’ve already dodged it twice. Since they are ’such people’, tell me why you call them that."

Xeno cut in, "He doesn’t have a reason. Or maybe he does, and it’s selfish. As far as I can see, the strongest people here are the ones who have mates. I think he is trying to keep them weak."

When it came to strength, Xeno had always been best at identifying the strengths of others. So for him to say this, it must be correct. This means this dhole was trying to harm the fox clan, but why?

Whatever the reason, it wasn’t their business. They were still advocating for their cotton, silk, and linen. And if that came with new tribe members, then they were more than happy to help.

"If you don’t want strong warriors, send them to us. Beastman or female, as long as they are loyal and willing to work, we’ll accept them." Xeno spat.

"You can’t speak for your tribe leader..."

"I am the tribe leader," Xeno replied in a low voice.

His declaration stopped everyone who was watching. Such a young tribe leader. What tribe is that?
