Back to the 1970s: Building My Fortune Through Time Trading-Chapter 389: Digging for Treasure
Her heart immediately leapt to her throat, and before she realized it, she had dashed out.
With nothing handy in her hands, she spotted the basin of dirty water her mom used to wash her feet in the main room.
She picked it up and rushed outside.
Liu Cuilan was just dozing off, and groggily opened her eyes to see her third daughter charging out with an enamel basin.
The family was thrifty, saving the foot-washing water for watering the vegetables. But why water the plants at this late hour?
Before she could figure it out, she saw her third daughter fling the courtyard door open and splash the entire basin of water outside.
Su Xiaoxiao deliberately aimed the basin toward the west wall corner.
A sneaky head had just peeked out, and she poured the whole bucket of water down on it. The person yelped instinctively, but was quickly silenced as a partner behind them clamped their mouth shut.
"Quiet down, are you trying to draw everyone’s attention?"
"Mmmph mmmph..."
The man with his mouth covered felt miserable. When the water was thrown, he had accidentally opened his mouth, and the water tasted salty and had a strange smell.
He immediately wanted to spit it out, but just as he was about to do so, his teammate covered his mouth, forcing him to swallow it.
Tears welled up in his eyes immediately; damn, this seems like foot-washing water! And stale at that!
Earlier, when Su Xiaoxiao splashed the water, her two brothers froze. Before they could react, Su Xiaoxiao swiftly pulled each of them into the courtyard.
She shut and locked the door in one smooth motion.
"Third sister, what are you doing?"
Why toss water out in the middle of the night and give them a scare?
Afraid those two hadn’t left yet, and with ears possibly against the wall, Su Xiaoxiao didn’t directly tell her brothers there were people outside.
If the two found out those might be the ones digging up the ancestral graves, they might rush out to fight.
Getting into a fight, you either end up in the police station if you win, or in the hospital if you lose. Neither is good.
"Mom said you two just came back from the graveyard, and told me to splash you with water to wash away the bad luck so you don’t bring anything unclean home."
Su Xiaoxiao made up on the spot.
The two brothers shivered a bit upon hearing this.
They hurried into the house, as if being chased by something.
Once inside, each grabbed an enamel mug and gulped down water.
Liu Cuilan had especially prepared sugar water for them to relieve fatigue.
Once the sons sat down, Liu Cuilan quickly asked them about what happened.
Su Fusheng, quicker with his tongue than his elder brother, rapidly narrated the night’s events.
Apparently, some unscrupulous person had dug up the entire patch of ancestral graves in the village, and by the time the villagers arrived after hearing noises, the graveyard had been ransacked.
Several families’ ancestors’ bones and coffins were piled together, looking much alike, and it was impossible to tell who belonged to whom.
Their family fared better; only the graves of their grandfather and great-grandfather were dug up, and their father’s grave, being less old, had just two shovelfuls removed.
"Which motherless cur would dig up someone’s ancestral graves? Truly vile to the core, with sores on their face and pus on their soles!"
Liu Cuilan cursed in anger, but with the culprits gone, there was nothing to be done, no matter how much she cursed.
Su Xiaoxiao thought of the two lurking outside the west wall and became even more sure they were likely the scoundrels who had desecrated the villagers’ graves.
Then what about the things they had...
Suddenly recalling the story her mom told about the earth-rich man’s grave, she hurriedly leaned in.
"Mom, is it possible these scoundrels were after the earth-rich man’s grave?"
"Probably not, the valuables were stolen long ago. Even if they’re fleecing, they can’t keep picking the same person, right?
And besides, that earth-rich guy was just unlucky; buried with grandeur for less than a day and thrown out naked, not even his underwear was left. What else can be stolen?"
Seeing her still standing, Liu Cuilan frowned, "It’s late, go to sleep now, you don’t want to be late for work."
Reluctantly, Su Xiaoxiao returned to her room, still wanting to hear more about the situation.
Exhausted from the day’s excitement, Su Xiaoxiao, physically and mentally drained, checked the game interface, made sure the two had left, then finally climbed into bed with ease.
That night, she slept deeply, dreaming of digging up the spot by the west wall and finding a large sack full of glittering gold fish.
She was rich, utterly rich.
Dreaming happily, she drooled all over her pillow.
With a desire in her heart, she got up before dawn the next morning.
It was only 4:30 a.m.
Still before work hours, and there weren’t many people outside.
Quietly, she slipped out of the house, bumping right into Su Jianwu, who was bleary-eyed coming out of the toilet.
"Third sister, you got a bathroom emergency too?"
Su Xiaoxiao: "..."
Why did this brat have to speak so loudly? Was he afraid no one would notice?
She hurriedly covered his mouth, "Little Wu, quiet down. It’s early morning, everyone’s still asleep, don’t wake them up."
Seeing the little brat still standing there, his eyes slowly focusing, she quickly said, "I couldn’t sleep, just going for a stroll. Go back to bed, it’s still dark out."
In the winter morning, it was still dark at this hour.
"Third sister, I’ll go with you."
Su Jianwu figured that third sister acting so out of the ordinary definitely meant something fishy, maybe she was sneaking out for some good food.
No way, he couldn’t let her eat alone. He had to follow and snatch a bite.
Su Xiaoxiao: "You go back to sleep, or you’ll be too tired at school. I’ll just take a walk and return."
Su Jianwu clung to her arm, "Third sister, I’ll go with you. You look like Pan Jinlian, what if you run into stragglers?"
Su Xiaoxiao: "..."
Seriously, couldn’t this brat use a different metaphor? Pan Jinlian? She thought he looked more like Wu Dalang.
With the brat adamant about tagging along, Su Xiaoxiao had to compromise, grabbing a short hoe leaning against the wall and shoving it into his hands, "No matter what you see, keep quiet."
His sister was indeed up to something big in secret, he got up early for good reason today.
The two opened the door, each carrying a hoe, snuck out of the courtyard, and headed straight to the little forest outside the west wall.
Su Xiaoxiao quickly found the marked spot and got excited when she saw newly covered soil there.
No gain without nighttime ventures, no wealth without unexpected income.
This was surely the Su Family’s chance to get rich.
She excitedly rubbed her hands, signaling to Su Jianwu: "Little Wu, quickly, be careful and dig here."
Surprised why a stroll turned into digging, but his third sister was always right.
Su Jianwu got to work promptly, following his sister’s lead and digging fast.
Su Xiaoxiao hadn’t realized that bringing this kid was a brilliant move, he was much more adept at digging than she was.
Soon the sack inside was revealed, and seeing Su Jianwu about to bring down the hoe again, she hurriedly signaled him to stop.
