Chapter 258 - 230 Wataru Playing Final Fantasy

Monday 24 March 1992

Wataru, a high school student and an avid Dragon Quest enthusiast, could barely contain his excitement. Today was the day he would finally experience another role-playing game, and not just any RPG—Final Fantasy. Just the sound of the title sent shivers of anticipation down his spine. He had heard rumors about this game, whispers of an adventure grander than anything before it, and now, he was about to see if those whispers were true.

The moment he stepped into the game store, his eyes immediately darted toward the shelf where the last copy of Final Fantasy sat. His heart raced as he reached for it, his fingers closing around the box just as another customer turned the corner. Wataru exhaled in relief. If he had been even a second later, he might have missed his chance.

He had already nearly lost out on this game because of his father. Over the weekend when a new batch of ZEPS games came out, his dad had dragged him on a family trip, forcing him to miss the initial release day. Wataru had sulked the entire time, barely paying attention to the beautiful mountain scenery or the fancy resort his parents had booked. The only thought on his mind had been this moment—returning home and securing his copy of Final Fantasy before it was too late.

Finally, with the game in hand, Wataru dashed home as fast as he could, his bag bouncing against his back with each hurried step. Tired from the trip? Maybe. But too tired to play? Never.

The second he got inside, he practically ripped the game's packaging open, eager to see what was inside. He laid out the contents on his bed: the cartridge, a thick manual, a colorful promotional pamphlet, and, of course, the now-familiar black-and-gray Z-card. He had collected a few of these before, and each one had led to Zabo-man. Flipping it over, he read the message: "Look for me, and I might give you something special."

He narrowed his eyes. "Another secret, huh? Alright, I'll keep my eyes open for you Zabo-man."

For now, he tossed the Zabo-card onto his desk and slid the cartridge into his console. As the screen flickered to life, a stirring 8-bit melody filled the room. The game's introduction played, displaying text against a black background:

"The world is in chaos, plagued by disasters and darkness. The four elemental Crystals—Earth, Fire, Water, and Wind—have lost their light due to the corruption of four powerful Fiends. A prophecy foretells that four warriors will appear, each bearing a darkened crystal, to restore balance."

Wataru's eyes widened. "Four heroes right from the start!? That's new!"

His excitement only grew as he reached the character selection screen. But the moment he realized what was happening, he nearly dropped his controller in shock.

"Wait, what!? I can CHOOSE my heroes!?"

On the screen were eight different classes, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. He eagerly read through them:

Warrior – A heavily armored sword-wielding fighter with high attack power and defense.

Monk – A martial artist who fights best unarmed, boasting high health and rapid attacks but weaker defense.

Thief – A nimble rogue with high speed, critical hits, and the ability to act first in battle, but with lower durability.

Paladin – A defensive powerhouse who wields a hammer, excels in protection, and has access to white magic.

Black Mage – A spellcaster specializing in destructive magic, dealing massive damage but having low physical endurance.

White Mage – A healer who focuses on protective and restorative spells, essential for long-term survival.

Red Mage – A hybrid between a swordsman and a spellcaster, able to wield both melee weapons and magic but without mastering either.

Ranger – A bow-wielding fighter with high agility and limited magic abilities, offering flexibility but weaker defenses.

Zaboru added 2 additional jobs for the ZEPS version of Final Fantasy.

Wataru's fingers hovered over the selection screen. "So many choices! This is insane! How do I even pick!?"

He knew a balanced team was the best approach, ensuring he could handle any challenge the game threw at him. After a few minutes of deep thinking, he made his decision.

"Alright! I need a Paladin—ultimate tank, no question. Next, I should get a Warrior for some extra damage. White Mage is a must—healing is too important to ignore. And finally... I need a Black Mage. Gotta have those massive spell attacks."

Satisfied with his choices, Wataru confirmed his party: Paladin, Warrior, White Mage, and Black Mage. But just as he was about to start, another prompt appeared.

"Oh? I have to NAME them? Alright, let's have some fun!"

With a mischievous grin, he went all in. For the Warrior, he typed "Wataru 1." Then, the Paladin? "Wataru 2." The Black Mage, "Wataru 3." And the White Mage despite clearly being female?? "Wataru 4."

He burst into laughter. "HAHAHA! I'M EVERYWHERE!"

Now armed with his squad of Watarus, he pressed start. The screen faded to black, and then, the adventure began.
