Chapter 257 - 229 Zaboru deals with Hakushensha anda Handai toys

Monday 24 March 1992

Monday morning after the incident with Akira Hamazou, Zaboru was already back at work. His body had healed at an unnatural pace, something even Ayumi found impossible to comprehend. Though the bruises and cuts were still faintly visible, he moved as if nothing had happened. When she pressed him on it, he simply shrugged it off, claiming he had always been a fast healer. Ayumi, however, wasn't convinced. Despite her lingering worries, she insisted on taking care of him, even going as far as postponing her college classes for a week so she could visit him every night. Zaboru sighed, knowing it was useless to argue. If he refused, she would only take it the wrong way and think he was pushing her away.

By mid-morning, Zaboru found himself in the ZAGE meeting room, seated at the head of the long conference table. The usual weekly meeting was underway, but today, there was a notable shift in the atmosphere. The moment he entered, the executives took notice of his slightly bruised face. Shinsuke, one of his closest associates and his Marketing head, was the first to comment.

"Boss, what the hell happened to your face?"

Zaboru waved off the concern with a nonchalant chuckle. "Don't worry about it, just a little accident. Let's focus on business."

Despite his casual tone, the room remained silent for a moment before Sayuri cleared his throat and moved the discussion forward. The meeting began, covering recent financial reports, upcoming game releases, and new strategic developments. Soon enough, they arrived at the topic Zaboru had been anticipating.

"As you all know," he began, adjusting his posture, "we've secured a deal with Hakushensha book publishing company. They will publish ZEPS Magazine, and I'll be providing the initial content guidelines. We are scheduled for release on April 7th. That brings us to our next major discussion—Handai Toys. Yumi, have they confirmed their interest?"

His secretary, Yumi, nodded. "Yes, boss. Their representative will be arriving at ZAGE today at 1:00 PM. They seem eager to establish a partnership with us."

Zaboru leaned back in his chair, pleased. "Good. This is a major step toward expanding the ZAGE brand beyond just video games. I want this meeting handled properly."

The discussion then shifted to third-party developers. Rika, the head of Administrator, provided an update. "We've had a surge of developers wanting to create games for ZEPS. Once I explained the licensing terms, most became even more interested. Many said they'd get back to us once their game concepts were polished and ready for submission."

Zaboru nodded approvingly. "That's exactly what I wanted to hear. The stronger our library of games, the harder it will be for competitors to catch up. Sorry about that, Rika. I promise I'll establish a dedicated department for handling potential third-party developers soon, but for now, I need you to manage it. Can I count on you?" Rika smiled and nodded. "Don't worry too much, boss. I'm fully capable of handling this."

With the meeting adjourned, Zaboru spent the next few hours reviewing character designs and overseeing the final preparations for ZAGE's upcoming April game releases. His desk was cluttered with sketches, concept art, and prototype game cartridges. He was so immersed in his work that he nearly lost track of time until Yumi knocked on his door, informing him of the visitor's arrival.

Standing at the entrance to his office was a well-dressed man in his late twenties. He exuded confidence and professionalism as he stepped forward, extending his hand.

"Good afternoon, Zaboru Renkonan-san. My name is Mido Mitoma, Chief Marketing Officer of Handai."

Zaboru shook his hand with a polite smile. "Nice to meet you, Mitoma-san. Please, have a seat."

Mido glanced around the office, his eyes lingering on the numerous character sketches pinned to the walls. "I must say, your office has an incredible energy to it. You can really see the passion behind ZAGE's creative process."

Zaboru chuckled. "I appreciate that, Mitoma-san. Now, let's get straight to business. What does Handai have in mind?"

Mido leaned slightly forward. "We're interested in securing the rights to produce official ZAGE toys. Specifically, plushies and action figures based on your most popular game characters. You may already be aware, but counterfeit versions of your characters are spreading rapidly in the market."

Zaboru's expression darkened slightly. "I know. We've already taken legal action against some of them. What are you proposing?"

Mitoma didn't miss a beat. "A partnership deal where Handai handles all aspects of production and marketing. We'll take 65% of the revenue, while ZAGE receives 35%. Given that Handai would cover manufacturing, distribution, and advertising costs, your company would be earning pure profit."

Zaboru studied him carefully. The offer sounded appealing, but he knew the toy industry had enormous profit margins, far larger than what was often disclosed in initial negotiations. He tapped his fingers on the desk thoughtfully. "That's a reasonable starting point, Mitoma-san, but before I agree to anything, I'd like a full breakdown of your projected production and marketing expenses."

Mido grinned. "I had a feeling you'd say that. You're sharp, Ren-san. I respect that. At Handai, we believe in transparency, especially when working with a company of your stature. I'll return tomorrow with a contract draft and the financial breakdown for your legal team to review."

Zaboru extended his hand. "That sounds fair. Looking forward to working with you."

Mitoma firmly shook his hand. "Likewise."

With the meeting concluded, Zaboru wasted no time refocusing on his other priorities. April's game releases were just around the corner, and his research and development team was about to begin work on one of their most ambitious projects yet. He made his way back to his workspace, ensuring everything remained on schedule.

By the time evening arrived, Ayumi was already waiting for him at ZAGE, just as she had promised. She entered his office carrying a small bag filled with medical supplies, her expression determined. Despite his insistence that he was fine, she refused to leave him unattended.

She sat beside him, gently dabbing his face with a cool cloth. "I don't care how fast you heal, Zabo. You still need to be taken care of." She even brought a nurse unifrom!

Zaboru sighed but couldn't suppress a small smile. Having someone care for him this much... it wasn't so bad after all, especially that nurse uniform hehehe.

The night stretched on as Ayumi continued fussing over him, and for once, he allowed himself to relax, letting her presence soothe the tension that had been lingering in his mind. Aaand she's wearing a Nurse Uniform!

To be continued.
