Alpha's replacement bride is destined mate-Chapter 80 Your mother died of poisoning
"We’re leaving today." Klaus angrily turned off the TV, slamming his fingers onto the power button on the remote control as if to vent all his anger on the innocent electronic device. He slammed the remote control onto the coffee table, and it let out a dull thud. "I’m definitely not going to put my wife on that damn congressional trial."
Emily was silent, knowing full well that the tribunals of Congress were the highest court, that they only heard cases of a special nature, and that the persons involved were usually persons of high rank, such as the Alpha and the Luna, or members of the royal family.
Moreover, it was a special rule of the courts of Congress that once they had received all the cases, they would hear them all, and that even if the accused fled the country, they would have means of retrieving that person.
Katharine had not hesitated to alert the court of Congress in order to destroy her, and it seemed that Katharine had no intention of letting her go this time. This time, she had nowhere to run.
Emily took a deep breath and made a decision. "I’m not leaving."
"You’re not leaving?" Klaus looked at Emily, puzzled, and he tried to convince her, "If we go back to the north now, you’ll be protected by the north, and we won’t come to the south again."
"Klaus." Emily sighed softly, her tone calm and determined, "I can’t just leave the South. The true cause of my mother’s death has not yet been investigated. If I leave..."
"As for the cause of your mother’s death, we can investigate later." Klaus interrupted Emily, his voice resolute, "I’ll have my people help you get to the bottom of this. I don’t want you to get involved in all that mess anymore."
"Klaus, it’s my business. I have to face it alone." Emily analyzed the pros and cons with Klaus, "I believe that Katherine’s accusation of murder has spread throughout the country, and soon the north will find out about it. So, in what capacity do you want me to return to the North? As a suspect in the murder of my stepmother?"
Emily held Klaus’s face in both hands and gazed deeply at him, "I appreciate your love for me, but I can’t hide under your wing for the rest of my life. This time, please let me face my enemies on my own."
"Of course, I can protect you for the rest of my life." Klaus took Emily’s hand and kissed the back of it, "Why don’t I kill your stepmother tonight? It would be easier."
Emily knew Klaus wasn’t joking, so she advised, "Katherine must be surrounded by reporters and bodyguards right now, and if the Capitol court accepts her complaint, she’ll be protected by Congress. Klaus, I know you’re trying your best, but this isn’t something that can be solved by killing Katherine directly." 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦
"And how do you want to put an end to this?" Klaus asked, his eyes full of concern.
"I’m going to let everybody know the truth of the matter." Emily spoke firmly about the thoughts that had been buried in her heart for a long time, "The truth is that Katherine and my father forced me to marry in the North, and they hurt me. Now that Katherine is accusing me of murder as a victim, I want to let everyone in the country know who Katherine really is."
"Since your stepmother intends to accuse you of murder in a congressional court, she must be prepared for everything," Klaus said in a low, concerned tone, his brow furrowed, his eyes flashing with worry.
"But Katherine isn’t telling the truth, and I didn’t murder her," Emily replied calmly. "Even if I’m brought before the Capitol court, I won’t fear her."
Just then, the doorbell rang abruptly, shattering the tension in the room. Klaus and Emily exchanged a look, both with a trace of confusion in their eyes. Klaus rose and approached the door.
"Could it be the royal representatives from the South?" Klaus muttered as he walked to open the door. His fingers gently brushed the knob, and he turned it slowly, the door creaking open to let in a flood of light that illuminated his face.
However, the man standing at the door was not a representative of the royal family from the south, but Marx. Marx looked slightly cramped outside the door, his eyes glinting with urgency and gravity.
"The results of the investigation are in," Marx said succinctly, without any unnecessary words.
Upon hearing this, Klaus raised his eyebrows slightly. "Come in."
Emily was mildly surprised to see Marx. "Marx, why are you here?" she asked.
"It was Klaus who asked me to investigate the true cause of your mother’s death, and I came as soon as I had the report," Marx told Emily honestly.
Emily cast a questioning glance at Klaus, her eyes filled with confusion and a touch of reproach. Why hadn’t he told her he’d secretly asked Marx to investigate the real reason behind her mother’s death? A mixture of gratitude and hurt surged within her, making her feel like an outsider who’d been kept in the dark.
"I’ll explain it to you later," Klaus reassured her, placing his hand on her shoulder. "First, let’s see what Marx has found. Come on."
They proceeded to the study, where Marx pulled a hard drive from his pocket and connected it to his laptop. He quickly opened a file.
"This is the official report of Emily’s mother’s death," Marx pointed to the file displayed on the screen. "It states that she died during childbirth, but we discovered another report at Dr. Walker Brighton’s residence, which claims that Emily’s mother died of poisoning."
"Poisoned?" Emily exclaimed, shocked. "My mother died of poisoning."
"As you can see, here’s the report," Marx said, opening another file. Emily peered at the screen, confirming that her mother had indeed died of poisoning, with the death certificate signed by the doctor.
"What the hell is going on?" Emily’s voice was filled with confusion and pain as her gaze flicked between the two conflicting accounts of her mother’s death.
"I investigated the doctors and nurses who assisted in the delivery based on the list Klaus provided. I discovered that the two nurses were murdered shortly after leaving their jobs, and Dr. Walker Brighton disappeared. Later, we learned that he had assumed a new identity and worked in a remote country hospital. Two years ago, Dr. Brighton was found hanged in his home. Our man discovered the report of this death hidden in a stone niche behind one of the frescoes in his house. He kept the death report, indicating its significance to him." Marx detailed the findings.
"He kept my mother’s death report, but never made it public," Emily mused, her brow furrowed. "Why would he do that?"
"Perhaps he’s contemplating making it public someday. Or maybe the death report served another purpose for him."
"Our team investigated Dr. Walker Brighton’s financial status and discovered that despite working in a rural hospital, he lived a luxurious life. He even left behind a substantial inheritance upon his death, which was divided among his relatives since he had no children."
"A rural doctor with a significant amount of assets," Emily grasped two crucial points, her voice tinged with suspicion and vigilance. "Does he have an alternate source of income?"
"Subsequently, our team delved into his private bank accounts and uncovered that a stranger deposited money into his account annually, each time no less than $10,000, sometimes even more," Marx explained.
"Have you identified who was making those deposits?" Klaus inquired.
"An anonymous account, but the remittance address was traced to the Red Moon pack," Marx replied.
"It’s my father’s pack," Emily gasped, wondering if it could indeed be her father.
"I surmise that the doctor must have leveraged this death report to extort someone, which explains his wealth."
"That concludes our investigation into Dr. Walker Brighton." Marx’s finger glided effortlessly across the laptop, opening another file. "There’s also a woman named Judy, or, I should say, Hannah."
"What did you uncover?" Klaus asked.
"Hannah, formerly Luna Diane’s maid, was rumored to have been responsible for accompanying Luna Diane to the hospital for childbirth. However, curiously, the maid vanished on the same day Luna Diane died. Our investigation revealed that she had arrived in the southern royal capital several years prior, seeking refuge with relatives, and that she had been exposed to drugs. That’s all we’ve found."
Emily’s guess had been correct. Judy must have been hiding from someone, and that person was her mother’s murderer.
But now, with all those involved in her mother’s death deceased, only Judy remained, and Emily didn’t know when she would awaken.
Suddenly, a phone rang in the tense atmosphere, shattering the silence of the room. Emily’s eyes immediately darted to the screen of her mobile phone, and upon seeing that it was a call from the hospital, an inexplicable anxiety surged within her.
Her hand shook slightly as she answered the call. The call lasted a mere two minutes, but those two minutes felt like an eternity to Emily. Her face paled at the contents of the call, her eyes brimming with shock and disbelief.
As soon as Emily ended the call, she seemed to lose all strength in her body and collapsed onto the couch.
"What happened?" Klaus’s voice was laced with concern and anxiety. He rushed to Emily’s side, crouched down, and gently placed his hands on her shoulders, offering her support and comfort.
Emily looked pained and spoke with difficulty, "Judy is dead."
