Chapter 76: Chapter 76 The Investigation Commences

Hotel

Emily and Klaus returned to the hotel after leaving the hospital, eager to notify Judy’s family of her injuries. However, when they checked Judy’s cell phone contact information, it didn’t contain any details for her family. Furthermore, the name on the identification card in her purse wasn’t Judy; it was Hannah.

Judy uses a false name and doesn’t even maintain contact with her family. What is she hiding? 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Or whom is she hiding from?

Emily sank into a chair on the hotel terrace, lost in thought. There were numerous indications that something more must have been at play in her mother’s death.

Now, the only person who might know the truth lay in a coma in the hospital, and even the doctors couldn’t predict when Judy would awaken. So how long would Emily have to wait? A year? Two?

No, she didn’t have that much time. Her visit to the South was only meant to last a fortnight, and she had little time left.

But Emily was at a loss now, unsure of where to start.

Emily sighed helplessly, and then Klaus placed a hand on her shoulder, his lips brushing her collarbone with a kiss.

"Are you still thinking about the woman named Judy?" Klaus’s voice was low and soothing, and he had just finished showering, his skin scented with fresh mint.

"I thought I could uncover more about my mother’s death through Judy, but now it seems hopeless." Emily gazed at the night sky with a perplexed expression. Why had she encountered so many obstacles since arriving in the South?

"I think you should investigate everyone who has come into contact with your mother. Maybe there’s more than one person who knows the truth," Klaus suggests.

"But I don’t know who came into contact with my mother," Emily’s eyes were downcast, and there was a deep sense of powerlessness in her voice. Her hand gently traced the emptiness in the air, as if hoping to touch her mother’s shadow within it. "I’ve never even seen her face."

Emily’s memory of her mother is a blank, and she can only imagine what her mother was like based on other people’s words.

Suddenly, Emily remembered that King James had told her he knew her mother and that perhaps he knew something.

"I have a file that might help you," Klaus ran his fingers through Emily’s soft hair. "But if I give you this information, you promise me not to be angry with me."

"Are you serious?" Emily turned to look at Klaus in surprise, only to see him nod.

"Where’s that information?" Emily asked eagerly.

"It’s stored on my laptop," Klaus repeated, emphasizing, "But you promise you won’t get mad at me after you see it."

"Okay, I promise," Emily said.

Emily then follows Klaus back to her room, where she opens the laptop he is carrying and accesses one of the encrypted files.

"Isn’t this my picture?" Emily stared at the image of herself that appeared on the computer screen. It was all about her. Emily reacted sharply, "You’ve been secretly investigating me?"

"Hey, you promised you wouldn’t be angry," Klaus explained to Emily. "When I learned from Dr. Stephen that your body had been injected with venom, I vowed to find out who had harmed you. So, I instructed Mark to do a background check. Trust me, sweetheart, I did it all because I care so much about you." His hand closed around Emily’s, trying to convey his sincerity.

"I’ll deal with you after this incident," Emily decided, choosing not to dwell on Klaus’s secret investigation of her for now. After all, there was more important business to attend to, and it wasn’t too late to settle his account with him.

Emily sat back in her chair, her eyes fixed on the information on the computer screen. The document contained all the information she had since her birth, and even some details of her life in the countryside were clearly recorded.

"Looks like you’ve been investigating me in detail," Emily said, a hint of sarcasm in her tone.

Klaus smiled warmly and, instead of responding directly to Emily’s question, he stared at the information about Emily on the computer screen. Then, he pointed to a line of text and said, "Look, here."

Emily looked in the direction of Klaus’s finger, where a line read: "Emily Fox was born at Noli Hospital, at one o’clock in the morning on May 7. Her mother, Luna Diane, died in childbirth and was buried at the Red Moon Cemetery at 8 a.m. on May 7. The doctor in charge of the delivery was Walker Brighton, and the two nurses were Winnie Houston and Kate Bright."

"Your mother was buried on the day you were born, which doesn’t quite align with Luna’s funeral rites," Klaus pointed out. "Isn’t it a bit hasty, judging by the timing of your mother’s burial?"

"You’re right," Emily mused. Even in the countryside, it was customary for the deceased to have memorial services before burial. She had never witnessed anyone being buried on the very day of their death; it was highly unusual.

Who made that decision? Could it be her father?

"Search for that doctor’s name," Klaus suggested. "The doctor who delivered you must know something."

So, Emily typed the name "Walker Brighton" into a search engine, and information about the doctor appeared online.

According to the information on the internet, Dr. Walker Brighton had been working at Red Moon Hospital, but the details after he left the hospital were unknown. Emily noticed that the doctor’s departure had occurred a week after her mother’s death.

It was probably too much of a coincidence.

Emily tried to search for the names of the other two nurses, but the information online revealed that the two nurses had left on the same day as Dr. Walker Brighton.

"It’s definitely not a coincidence," Emily affirmed. "Someone must be trying to hide something!"

"Maybe your mother didn’t die in childbirth at all," Klaus said in a deep voice. "Someone is trying to hide the true cause of your mother’s death. Who is that person?"

"Is it my father?" Emily voiced her conjecture. "Only he has that power."

"But why would he want your mother to die?" Klaus asked, perplexed.

Why did her father want her mother to die? Why?
