Chapter 77: Chapter 77 Will You Help Her?

Late in the evening, after glancing at Emily, who was sleeping soundly, Klaus got up quietly and left the bedroom swiftly.

A floor below, Klaus walked up to Marx’s room and rang the bell, which echoed loudly in the silence of the night.

Presently, Marx appeared behind the door in a white T-shirt, his eyes bright and alert, with a clarity that was distinct from sleepiness.

"You haven’t slept yet?" There was a hint of surprise in Klaus’s voice.

"Aren’t you?" Marx glanced at the bottle in Klaus’s hand and didn’t seem surprised by the late-night visit. "You want me to drink with you?"

"Let’s go inside."

Klaus opened the whiskey in his hand, poured the amber liquid into two crystal-clear glasses, and handed one to Marx. The two men sat on the terrace, and the moonlight bathing them lent a serene ambiance to their conversation.

"I thought you stopped drinking late at night since you had Emily," Marx said, raising his glass. His hand shook slightly, and the ice cubes clinked against each other in the whiskey. He took a sip of the whiskey with ice and wore an expression of satisfaction, as if he were savoring the tranquility of the moment.

"I just don’t drink as much as I used to, but that doesn’t mean I have to quit entirely," Klaus replied, his dark green eyes gazing ahead. He recalled that every night since the loss of Maya had been consumed by drinking.

He hated the night and couldn’t even sleep when he was awake. For every time he closed his eyes, the cursed memories would return in his dreams. In his dreams, he was surrounded by pain, helpless against it, so that he could only let the memories slice his heart again and again like sharp knives.

He felt nothing when he was drunk, and those bitter memories couldn’t hurt him. He had been drinking heavily in the middle of the night for years, until Emily came along. She was like a balm that soothed him into sleep in the solitude of the night.

"Do you have something to worry about?" There was a hint of concern in Marx’s voice.

"I need you to do something," Klaus said. "I want you to mobilize our spies in the South to investigate the true cause of Emily’s mother’s death."

Marx held his glass in his hand and looked at Klaus in surprise. "You want me to mobilize our spies to investigate the cause of Emily’s mother’s death?"

"Yes." Klaus drained his glass in a single gulp, and his eyes flashed with determination.

"Klaus, are you serious?" Marx lowered his voice and cautioned him, "You’re visiting the South now, and if you move those spies at will, it’s very likely that the people of the Southern Royal Family will find out. Do you want to jeopardize the spy network that we’ve been working so hard to maintain?"

"Just make sure they’re careful when they carry out their tasks." Klaus spoke calmly. "I’m confident that the people of the Southern Royal Family won’t easily uncover their existence."

"It’s too risky for you to make such a decision," Marx argued, loyal Beta that he was, always thinking about Klaus and the interests of the North.

"Do as I say," Klaus’s tone was unequivocal.

"At least you should tell me why you’re investigating the cause of Emily’s mother’s death," Marx said, his voice tinged with displeasure. He clenched his hand around his glass, his eyes filled with suspicion and concern. Though he disagreed with the decision, he knew he had to follow orders in the face of Klaus’s resolute attitude.

"Emily suspects that her mother was murdered," Klaus said simply. "She needs to look into it."

"So you’re going to use our spies to help her with the investigation?"

"The things Emily cares about are the things I care about." Klaus looked at Marx, who repeated, "Do as I say."

"Okay, I’ll do as you say." Sullenly, Marx filled his glass with whiskey and gulped it down.

"I’ll give you a few names, and you’ll have our people investigate them secretly. Remember, whatever information you find, you have to tell me as soon as possible."

"Give me a deadline," Marx said.

"Before we leave the South, I want you to have made progress on this."

"Based on the deadline you give me, I don’t have to spend all my time in the South just because it takes a lot of time and energy to deal with this," Marx said, half-jokingly.

Klaus patted Marx on the shoulder and smiled. "I trust your efficiency."

That’s right. Based on what Klaus knows about Marx, if he were given a two-week deadline, he would usually get things done in a week or even less.

"There’s one thing I want to tell you," Marx muttered. "It’s about the maid named Heidi."

"Do you have a crush on Heidi?" Klaus asked, amusement in his eyes. "I didn’t expect you to like her type of woman."

"No kidding, Klaus," Marx said with a serious face. "I just think there’s something suspicious about that woman."

"What’s suspicious about her?"

"I don’t know, it’s just a gut feeling," Marx said, his eyes thoughtful. "I’d like to ask your permission to investigate her one more time."

Klaus pondered for a moment, his eyes sparkling with thought. He took a deep breath, as if weighing the pros and cons, and then said slowly, "Okay, I’ll allow you to investigate Heidi again, but you won’t let Emily know about it. After all, she loves Heidi a lot, and I don’t want any misunderstandings between you."

Marx made a zipping gesture with his lips and told Klaus, "I’m going to keep this a secret."

Klaus agreed, raising his glass and clinking it with Marx’s. The crisp crash of glasses echoed loudly in the stillness of the night.

Haley pulled out her spare cell phone in the room and, as usual, reported Emily’s daily activities to Elijah. She was about to turn off the phone when it rang as she finished.

The caller was an unfamiliar number, and Haley hesitated to answer, so she hung up to be on the safe side. A few seconds later, the phone rang again, and Haley pressed the answer button on the phone, not speaking but waiting for the other person to speak.

"Haley?" Elijah’s voice came from the other end of the line.

It was Elijah. How could he have called her out of the blue?

"I need you to do something," Elijah said.

"What?" Haley picked up the phone, and Elijah’s calm, familiar voice made her feel as if he were right next to her.

"I suspect that Alpha Klaus’s visit to the South was not just a simple visit, and that perhaps he would have instigated the King of the South to unite against the West," Elijah said, his directive clear and unambiguous. "So I want you to figure out the real purpose of Alpha Klaus’s visit to the South this time."

Haley thought for a moment and said, "What do you want me to do if the true purpose of Alpha Klaus is as you guessed?"

There was a pause of a few seconds at the other end of the line, as if Elijah were deliberately weighing his words. Then, his voice came, "Then I will personally go and meet with the King of the South, and I will not let Alpha Klaus’s plan succeed."

"I see, I’ll do what you say."

After hanging up, Haley fell into a deep reverie about what she knew of Elijah. His surmise was not without foundation. He must have guessed the purpose of Alpha Klaus’s visit to the South.

So, once it is confirmed that Elijah’s conjecture is correct, he will definitely come to the South.

Haley couldn’t help but smile at the thought of meeting Elijah.
