Chapter 212: Chapter 212 The War Begins

North, Border

Dyson stood on a hillock in his black combat uniform. The biting wind whistled past, shaking the equipment on his body slightly and making a slight metallic clatter.

His expression was grim and stern, and he held his high-powered binoculars in his hand, his gaze, like a falcon piercing through the lenses, locked on to the area along the southern border. He was followed by the Army of the North. The soldiers were also dressed in modern combat gear, with bulletproof vests, combat boots and assault rifles. All of them, every one of them, was like a fortress ready for war, and there was an air of solemn tension about them.

Through his high-powered binoculars, Dyson saw deployed troops and patrol teams on the southern border. The corners of his mouth lifted a little, and he smiled a confident, cold smile.

Dyson knew that the frontier line before him was the critical gateway to the heart of the South, and that by breaking through here the whole strategic situation would be turned in the North’s favor.

At this moment, an adjutant in military uniform jogged to Dyson’s side, and he reported to Dyson in a low voice, "Everything has been prepared, please instruct."

Dyson lowered his binoculars, and he said to the adjutant, "Pass the word to launch an artillery attack on the southern border in ten minutes."

"Do we need to rendezvous with the western army before we launch the attack together? " the adjutant asked.

"No. " Dyson said, "We’ll take the lead and the Westerners will follow us."

"Yes, Alpha." The adjutant immediately relayed the order through his radio equipment.

Ten minutes later the first shells broke the silence of the frontier. The cannonballs cut the sky like arrows from a string, and whistled shrilly as they thundered toward the southern frontier. More shells rained down in quick succession, and they exploded in a blaze of fire and smoke across the land south of the frontier.

Dyson stared intently through his binoculars at the southern border. Cannonballs were constantly bursting in the enemy’s position, and the sight before him caused a smirk to creep over his lips, as the Confederates, thrown into an expected panic, scurried about like a swarm of headless flies. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

"Pass on the order to push the battle line forward. " Dyson ordered, "Make sure to break through the southern border defenses, our goal is to take the Red moon pack."

"Yes., Alpha. " The Adjutant’s voice remained clear and strong through the fire.

South, Red Moon Pack

After supper Emily took a solitary walk along the river. The afterglow of the setting sun had long since been swallowed up by the night, and the sky looked like a sheet of black satin, in which the stars, like broken diamonds, gleamed faintly.

Emily stood in the center of the stone bridge, looking up at the stars in the darkness of the night. Mrs. Bauer said, dead relatives will become stars in the sky. But which star was her mother?

Suddenly a shrill siren sounded. The sound cut through the stillness of the night like a sharp blade, and interrupted Emily’s thoughts.

A figure ran and shouted, " Everyone gather in the square."

Could it be that there was some sort of emergency? Emily could not think in time, and she ran at once in the direction of the square.

By the time Emily reached the square, many people had already gathered there. The cacophony of voices, panicked eyes and tense atmosphere combine to create a disturbing picture. The children were crying out in terror at the sudden turn of events, while the adults were in a panic, asking each other what was the matter. Others were arriving in all directions, their figures looming in the night, their steps hurried and alarmed.

" Emily, here." Dolly’s voice rang through the crowd, and she waved her hand vigorously at Emily, who hurriedly pushed her way through the crowd to Dolly’s side.

" What happened?" Emily asked anxiously.

"The North has attacked us at the border." Dolly whispered, " The war has begun."

Emily was astounded at the suddenness of the news. She had not expected the war to begin so soon.

At that moment, Alpha Robert stood up on a high platform in the center of the square, and with a microphone in his hand, he said to everyone, "Quiet."

Soon, everyone quit. Then Alpha Robert said, "The North is attacking our borders, and now we must prepare for battle. Here are the lads gathered together. We are going to organize a fighting party. The women and old men, with their children, went to the shelter at the rear of the village. Now."

The crowd in the square began to move in an orderly fashion. With determination in their eyes, the young men made their way toward the area designated by Alpha Robert, and among them were the familiar friends of Emily and the villagers who usually worked in silence. At that moment they all had determination written on their faces, as if they had forgotten their fears. The women, on the other hand, were assisting the elderly while calming their crying children and walking in the direction of the shelter.

Emily looked at the scene before her, and without a moment’s hesitation made her way toward the group of young men. But Alpha Robert stopped her.

" Emily, you can’t stand it. " Alpha Robert said in a cold tone, "You don’t belong in the Red moon pack."

"But this is where I live. " Emily retorted, "I have a duty to protect this land."

"Get out of here. " Alpha Robert stepped forward, as if trying to force Emily’s hand with his aura.

" No!" Emily yelled down at Alpha Robert, her eyes turning red with rage, " I will not leave like a cowardly deserter, I belong here."

Emily clenched her fists so tightly that her nails were almost embedded in her palms. " You can choose to leave, but I’m staying and fighting. Those Northern troops will have to step over my dead body if they want to take over our home."

" If you stay here, you will—" Before Alpha Robert could finish his sentence, a loud bang was heard from the sky. The crowd looked up in horror, only to see a streak of fire streaking across the night sky like a flaming meteor falling in the direction of the village.

It was a shell fired by the Northern troops, and the moment it struck the ground and exploded, the tremendous impact kicked up a gust of wind that blew some of the debris from the edge of the square in all directions. Flames shot into the sky, lighting up an otherwise dark night, and billowing smoke quickly filled the air, filling everyone’s nostrils with a pungent odor.

" It’s cannonballs! Everyone run!" Alpha Robert shouted. Villagers began running around in panic, and what had been an orderly evacuation turned into chaos. The cries of the children were mingled with those of the adults, and the whole square was in a state of extreme alarm.
