Chapter 31: You Are Second Best!

KALIA

"I’m sorry for taking too long in the restroom, I didn’t mean—" I was interrupted by Darren who engulfed me in a very tight embrace.

A shocked gasp escaped my lips at the invasion and my brain began calculating. This wasn’t exactly what I was expecting him to do and it wasn’t part of the contract now or was it?

My eyes almost popped out of their sockets. He was hugging me. I coughed slightly and he pulled himself away from me slowly as he tried to recover himself.

"Thanks for doing whatever it is that you did in the restroom with Liana, Kalia." He started, his eyes dancing in delight.

"I’ve been trying my very best to secure this deal with her company for so long and I’m so glad that it worked out tonight which is all thanks to you."

"You’re my good luck charm." He sounded excited which was weird because I didn’t do anything. Why would he be thanking me? He did all the work to convince her himself.

"I only helped her wipe her stained dress though. I’m not sure that I did anything other than that." I muttered silently to myself.

I had no idea that she was the person Darren wanted to sign the contract with. But in the end, I was glad though. I felt relieved like I had achieved something myself.

At least I managed to help him out just like he had helped me out too. What’s even better is that Callum will leave this event utterly devastated and disappointed.

It’s a win for both parties but I didn’t exactly tell him that. He wouldn’t even understand either.

"It’s alright." I whispered softly "I’m glad that I could help."

"Wait here, I’ll grab you a glass of wine and then, we can leave afterwards." He left after getting an approval from me while I waited for him to get back and just then, I was approached by Callum.

The so called bastard I had been trying to avoid all evening. I didn’t see Celyn anywhere around him so I guess that she was somewhere around, exploring the party and making new connections.

"Wow, Kalia." He whistled in a disgusting manner. The stench of alcohol in his breath made my skin crawl but I tried not to let it bother me. We were in public after all.

"I never knew that you could clean up this nicely. You never looked this beautiful when we were engaged to each other. I’m surprised that you managed to pull off this look."

"I have no interest in talking to you tonight Callum. I’m here with my husband to be and he doesn’t like it when I’m with another man that’s not him."

"You see," I continued. "Unlike some idiots who likes the idea of roaming around with different women to feel good about themselves, Darren sticks to one because he knows what he wants. He’s not confused as you are."

He scoffed but I could see the envious look on his face. He didn’t like the fact that I was with his brother and comparing Darren to him.

Darren was right. Callum doesn’t like losing, especially to him so if I wanted to get my revenge on him, to humiliate him, I’d have to use that information to my advantage.

I’d have to trigger his buttons as much as I can and make him look useless.

I have to give him more reasons why he wasn’t good enough and worthy to be the Alpha’s son just like he did to me.

He was an illegitimate son after all and a cheat on top of everything so he doesn’t deserve any kindness.

"You literally could’ve chosen any man on earth, Kalia. Why Darren? I don’t understand why you’d chose him."

"I thought that you were in love with me but it’s surprising to see that you have moved on so quickly barely after calling off our marriage like it meant nothing to you."

"I thought that we were inseparable, a power couple, you and me." He tried to sound pathetic so that I would take pity on him.

Maybe he felt like I still had feelings for him. He must be out of his mind. Inseparable my ass.

"The truth is that, I used to love you Callum but then again, I thought to myself." I paused briefly and then.

"Why settle for second best, the bottom of the food chain when you can have the whole option instead?" I arched a brow at him and his eyes turned red with anger in a matter of seconds.

I know that he has heard that word, that phrase and statement everyday of his pathetic life so it must hurt as hell to hear it from me.

"I mean, Darren is smart, kind and most of all, he is your father’s first son by legitimate blood and by right, he’s the Alpha prince who is next in line to your father’s empire and you..." I clicked my tongue in disappointment.

"You’re just his illegitimate son. You’re second best and worst of all, you don’t even have any right and will always be in Darren’s shadow because you are good for nothing."

"Besides, if you could cheat on me with my stepsister after everything I did for you to build an empire then, why shouldn’t I?"

I chuckled. "I want to be a little greedy like you are Callum. I want to have a taste of what you’re after and I can assure you that it has been very satisfactory so far."

He looked away. His ego had been bruised and deflated and I liked it. I liked seeing him this way. I like seeing him this riled up without moving a muscle.

"You and I know that you are nothing when it comes to Darren. You’re just....You. Plain old Callum." I said with a mocking expression on my face.

"How dare you—"

I raised a finger at him, stopping him mid sentence. "We are in public and I’m not done talking yet. I still have one good news to share with you tonight in regards to one of your many losses."

"Actually, it’s good news for me and bad news for you. Do you know that Darren just scored that deal that also brought you here tonight?" I said to him and he looked at me in disbelief.

"The contract you wanted so bad was just given to him which means that you have lost that one to him too."

"First you lost your father’s love, then you lost me and now, this contract which brings me to the next question, what else are you going to loose next, Callum?"

"I feel pity for you but then again I don’t because I’ll make sure that you keep on losing everything that you have and own. This is only the beginning." I said to him with a mirthless smile on my face.

"Callum." Celyn called out to him as she approached us. She wasn’t looking too happy to see us together and I wished I cared but I didn’t.

I mean, was she expecting him to magically change overnight after all that he had done to me?

"What are you doing here?" She asked him but he was too angry to respond. I guess my words must’ve gotten to him. "And why are you here with her?" She glared at me as she spoke.

Darren walked up to me and intertwined our hands together.

I almost flinched but I was able to calm down when it dawned on me that it was him and no one else. "I got you your wine as requested, love. Are you ready to go now?"

I nodded and turned to face Celyn. "Good night Celyn and do well to put your fiance on a leach because he has a tendency to roam around to the nearest pond like a lost dog looking for affection and who knows who he might run off to the next time you’re not around."
