"So she’s the eldest daughter of Alpha Arnold? Your half brother’s ex-fiance?" Rain inquired, his hands dipped into his pocket as he took steady strides towards the balcony where I stood, my hands firmly holding the hand rail for balance.

I was upset but I don’t even know why. Why am I upset? I know that i don’t have any right to be but I just can’t help it.

Rain placed his hands on my shoulders and tapped gently in comfort.

"I didn’t understand why you decided to get involved with her before but now that I saw everything play out in front of my very eyes, I think I kinda do."

"She’s going through so much and sadly, only a guy like you can help her but what I don’t understand is why you agreed on marriage."

"You could have literally chosen any other way to help her out but that. Why does it have to be a sacred bond? Why marriage of all things unholy?"

"What happens if you eventually find your mate? What would you do then?" He asked but I was the least worried about that.

I wasn’t ready for marriage because getting married would involve creating a bond with someone and creating a bond would mean intimacy and that part is definitely the place where I do not shine at the moment.

"The chances of finding my mate and marking her as mine with my condition are on a ratio of like a thousand to one."

"It’s not possible in this lifetime of mine and even if I do find one, there’s no guarantee that she would be alive till we perform the marriage rites." I answered him casually.

My eyes were cast on the open sky as I watched the fluffy clouds fold themselves to become one before separating as though they weren’t there to begin with.

"I didn’t have to get married to Kalia but then again, I didn’t have a choice. She needed me and I couldn’t turn my back on her." I added before straightening myself to full height.

"She was helpless and marrying her was the only option that we had at the time."

Rain breathed out loudly. "You know that we are still looking for the cure to your condition right?" He said to me.

"You’re not going to end up like this for the rest of your life, Darren. You’re going to get cured and when that happens, you’ll eventually find a woman worthy of becoming your mate. You just have to give it time and be rest assured that it will happen."

I chuckled. "Right. And when is it going to happen? Do you know how long I’ve been hearing these types of false prophecies and failed proclamations?"

"I’ve been hearing them all my life. Ever since the very first day I wolfed out as a changeling. They told me that I would get cured but it has never happened."

"I’ve come to a conclusion that I will end up like this for the rest of my life so you trying to pacify me with false hope will not change anything. This is my fate and I’ve pretty much accepted it."

"I understand that maybe I must’ve overdid it with the whole marriage thing and all but it’s not legal. We will only be married on paper so you don’t have to worry about me because it doesn’t count."

"I’m not worried about you. I’m worried about her." He blurted out, forcing me to face him.

"I’ve seen how all these types of situations play out. First you think that it’s only going to be a marriage contract and that you’re trying to help her out of a problem so you don’t want anything more but with time, you might end up wanting more."

"Yesterday you never planned that she would spend the night at your house let alone meet her and now today, she’s moved in."

"Like it or not, you’ll be in each other’s space a lot and even though you might not want it, you will eventually end up wanting it so what would you do when that happens?" He asked but I couldn’t bring myself to respond.

He does have a fair point but I don’t want to admit to it.

"You are like a time bomb waiting to explode any minute from now Darren, which is why we decided that you stayed away from any woman for the time being." He went on, drawing in a deep breath as he spoke.

"Kalia is a fragile woman. What if one day she falls in love with you and what if one day you end up loving her back?"

"That will never happen—"

"I asked what if, Darren." He cut me short. "What if it happens? You don’t know that yet because there’s no telling if it might happen or not and that’s why I’m against all of this."

"Is she even aware of your condition? Have you told her yet? Does she know?"

"She doesn’t." I answered. "Our relationship will only be for a short while and after that she will leave. She said it herself and I agreed with her so there’s no point in telling her anything. I wouldn’t dare put her through that. Not after everything that she has gone through."

"And what if your feral form takes over one day? You and I know that you can’t control it when it takes over so how would she protect herself from you? This is beyond risky Darren."

"What you’re doing for her is noble and I commend your efforts but how you’re going about it is what scares me to death." He laid down his worries in front of me.

"Despite being a woman from a low status, she is also an Omega and compared to you, she is powerless, weak and utterly fragile. It will be impossible for her to handle you if you spiral out of control."

"Even I, find it difficult to handle you when shit happens so what would happen to her then?" He asked with a quizzical look.

I could tell that he was scared and that he cared about her safety and well-being which was why he was taking his time to explain all of this to me.

"I’ve been trying to control myself and my emotions so that it doesn’t get out of control and as long as Kalia is in this house with me, I will try my utmost best to make sure that she is safe and that I don’t hurt her. I will never hurt her." I deadpanned in a way that I even believed myself. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

"I have hurt a lot of people in the past but I won’t do the same to her. For her sake, I will try my very best to be as sane as possible." I promised him.

"I just can’t send her back to that house. You saw how it was when we went there ourselves. I can’t let her stay there otherwise they would do something even worse than what they did today."

Rain blinked furiously and casted his eyes away towards the opposite direction. He was definitely in a state of dilemma and I knew that he was finding it difficult to take a stand.

"Fine. If you decide that you want to do this then I guess that I have no choice but to support and help you out as best I can even though I still have my doubts about this."

I smiled. "Thank you for helping me Rain. You’re a good friend."

"And concerning that nonsense you said about her using you, you better snap out of it. I don’t know what you were thinking when you blurted that out but you have to stop it." He warned me sternly but what he doesn’t know is that I meant it. I meant every bit of that statement.

"She’s lucky to have you help her out even though I still don’t know—" Rain’s words are caught up in the air when we are both interrupted by a knock on my bedroom door.

He excused himself to open up the door and Moira rushed in as soon as he did.

"Moira is everything okay?" I asked as I hurriedly approached her. She met me halfway in my strides.

"It’s Lady Kalia my lord." She blurted out. I could smell her fear and anxiousness and it bothered me almost to the point of setting my wolf off.

"Calm down and talk to me Moira, what’s going on?"

"I think Kalia might be in trouble." She started. "Your half brother Callum is here and he forcefully—" I didn’t allow her finish that statement as I dashed out of the bedroom making my way downstairs and outside the mansion.

I caught them in a heated argument and just before Callum would hit her, I swooped in almost immediately, creating a barrier between the two of them so that he doesn’t touch her.

I gently pushed Kalia behind me so that she doesn’t get hurt.

"Well, well, well..." He trailed off in a mocking tone.

"If it isn’t my cursed half brother. Just the person that I desperately wanted to see." He chimed in a condescending tone while I held onto Kalia as though my life depended on it.
