Chapter 71: Chapter 71: Them in the Snow

Crystal Dawson was feeling restless with nothing to do. Her days were filled with eating, drinking, and sleeping, often lamenting how dull her mind had become. When she heard what I said, she immediately offered to take on the task of confirming whether Susan Adler was pregnant.

"Alright, I’ll keep investigating Susan Adler over the next few days, looking for a breakthrough to get the negatives back." I gratefully took Crystal Dawson’s hand, "Thank you, Crystal!"

"Why are we even talking about thanks between us? Let’s go, today I’ll accompany you to the hospital to see Auntie first." Crystal Dawson quickly grabbed a coat and then dragged me back to the hospital.

On the way, Crystal Dawson also bought some nutritional supplements to take along.

When we passed by Walter Vaughn’s ward, we found Azure Vaughn standing inside. Her sky-blue down jacket was snug and the color suited her well, maintaining her usual pure and beautiful aura.

Crystal Dawson, with her sharp eyes, recognized Azure from just a side profile. She stopped in her tracks, "Oh my, isn’t that the mistress?"

She didn’t care about Azure’s true nature, anyway, tangled with a married man was a mistress.

Azure, upon hearing our voices, immediately turned her head to glance at us, then squeezed out a smile and returned to the ward.

She seemed to have been looking at my mom’s ward door just now. Could it be that Henry Preston is here?

"Come, let me tell you something." I pulled Crystal Dawson to the other end of the corridor and briefly summarized the events of the past few days. I then advised her, "Whatever you do, don’t pity me. I am aware of everything; I don’t care, I’m just waiting for the day when Henry Preston finally agrees to divorce me."

Crystal Dawson’s mouth opened wider and wider, her eyes almost popping out. It took her a while to digest what I said, and her tone turned excited and admiring, "Zoe, are you saying that right now, it’s Henry Preston who won’t agree to the divorce?"

I nodded.

"Awesome, that’s great! No wonder you’re so calm right now!" Crystal Dawson looked as if she had won the lottery with her happy expression.

When I was reborn, I had told them that I wanted to divorce Henry Preston, but we still hadn’t divorced until now.

With my previous self’s slavish nature, it would definitely have been a case where Henry suggested the divorce and I, for the life of me, wouldn’t agree, so we dragged it on. They certainly wouldn’t have expected that I’m the one initiating the divorce, and Henry still disagrees.

With my prior warning, Crystal Dawson paid less attention to Azure, merely rolling her eyes as we passed Walter Vaughn’s ward.

I slowed down my pace and glanced inside the ward; Azure was staring at the two of us walking past.

When I reached my mom’s ward, sure enough, Henry Preston was there.

Henry Preston was uncharacteristically peeling an apple for my mom. The ward was warm enough that his outer coat was on the chair, and he looked very elegant and gentlemanly in his vest suit, with an exceptional aura.

Seeing Crystal Dawson and me enter, he handed the peeled apple to my mom, speaking in a gentle tone, "Mom, I’m off to the company now."

"Alright, it’s considerate of you to visit me despite your busyness," my mom smiled as she accepted the apple.

"Of course," Henry rose to grab his coat, glanced at me with deep meaning in his dark eyes, and added, "If there’s anything, call me."

I knew he meant me, and I didn’t respond, instead avoiding his gaze and arranging the nutritional supplements Crystal Dawson brought.

Henry Preston was not the type to dwell on things, nor would he care about my deliberate disregard. After he left the ward, Crystal Dawson immediately went out to see if Henry had a word with Azure.

I reminded Crystal Dawson not to expose the matter regarding Azure in front of my mom. My mom was already in a low mood, and if she found out about Azure, she might faint from anger again. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

With Henry’s capability, relocating Walter Vaughn to another hospital or changing wards should be fairly easy. He would probably figure out a way to move Walter Vaughn’s family in the next few days.

Otherwise, his potential future mother-in-law and father-in-law living in adjacent wards, with his soon-to-be ex-wife and future wife facing each other frequently, would be quite awkward.

"Mom, how about I hire a caregiver for you? Crystal and I also have time to investigate Susan Adler," I suggested to my mom, holding her hand as I sat by her bedside.

"Alright, Zoe, I’ve thought it over, and I still believe in your dad," my mom sighed deeply, "Sigh, thirty years of marriage shouldn’t be easily broken by someone."

Crystal Dawson also pledged emphatically, "Auntie, rest assured, I will help Zoe, and we will definitely chase away that vixen!"

My mom didn’t blame me for telling Crystal Dawson but looked at her gratefully, "Thank you, Crystal."

Crystal Dawson beamed a bright smile, "No need to thank me; I love targeting mistresses directly."

As she finished speaking, I saw Azure’s figure quickly disappear from the doorway. I wasn’t sure if she heard Crystal’s words clearly.

After a while, Crystal Dawson left first, leaving only me and my mom in the ward. We chatted briefly before she drifted into sleep, clearly not having rested well these past two nights. It was only after my dad’s visit and their reconciliation that she could finally sleep peacefully.

The ward felt stuffy, so I moved by the window and opened a small crack the width of my palm.

Cold wind rushed into the warm room, cooling my flushed face. But in the next moment, my gaze froze, fixed on the man and woman in the snowy ground below.

Henry Preston hadn’t returned to the company but was speaking with Azure Vaughn.

From the moment he bid my mom farewell to now, he hadn’t left the hospital for an entire hour, waiting for Azure?

I watched them with a blank expression as if they were complete strangers, yet uncontrollable emotions surged within me, mingling irony with a sense of being played.

If he loves Azure so much, why does he hold onto me without letting me go? Doing things and saying words that he shouldn’t.

Seemingly sensing my gaze, Henry suddenly looked up towards the window.

I turned away from the window just in time as a caregiver entered, saying she was introduced by Ivan Underwood.

"If my mom has any issues, call me immediately." After leaving a phone number for the caregiver, I hurriedly left.

Later, I contacted a private investigator, planning to spend money to fully investigate Susan Adler.

My dad’s personnel files were somewhat detailed but lacked useful information. Given Susan was from City C and had a family and a child, I sent people to City C for investigation.

By the time I finished arranging these tasks, evening had fallen. The bustling streets glimmered with neon lights, reflecting off the wet ground and onto the snow, exuding a mixture of liveliness and chill.

Standing by the roadside, I watched couples walk hand in hand, chatting and laughing happily.

Lost in thought, Ivan Underwood’s call snapped me back, his voice deep, "Where are you?"

"On the street," I replied thoughtlessly, a bit absentmindedly.

This vague answer rendered Ivan momentarily silent before he spoke again, "Send me your location."
