After His Sweetheart Moved In, He Came Home Every Night-Chapter 11: Being Pregnant
Alice York had been worried that Wyatt Sterling might have overheard her conversation with Zoe Jenson.
Well, that settled it. Her worst fears were confirmed.
Wyatt had indeed heard everything.
"You’re usually so sharp-tongued. Why so quiet now?" Wyatt reached for her.
Before his fingertips could touch Alice’s face, she jerked back, and dodged his hand. She stared at him defensively. "Zoe and I always talk like that, with no filter. She was just joking. She didn’t mean to offend you."
Wyatt’s eyes narrowed as he watched her for a moment. "Don’t pull away."
Alice’s fingers, braced against the mattress, curled into fists. As Wyatt’s hand reached for her again, she held still, letting him grip her chin.
"If I hadn’t come in," Wyatt asked, "were you going to tell that friend of yours the truth, or were you going to spin her a lie?"
Alice didn’t dare to meet Wyatt’s gaze, but her reply was sharp and decisive. "I won’t tell anyone about the past three years, not even my closest friends. You can rest assured, Uncle."
"And what if I can’t?" he said, his grip on her chin tightening.
Her skin was fair and delicate, and his forceful grip was already chafing a red mark onto her chin, a stark contrast to the pale skin around it.
Wincing in pain, Alice summoned her courage and met his scrutinizing gaze. "Then what do you intend to do, Uncle?"
Wyatt replied, "Keep an eye on you."
At his words, Alice’s breath hitched. She clawed at his hand, her voice agitated. "Wyatt, that night you promised me..."
But seeing the look on his face, the rest of the words died in her throat.
Wyatt yanked his hand away, and his face looked terrifyingly cold. "Go on. What did I promise you that night?"
’Shameless bastard,’ Alice York cursed him inwardly.
Meanwhile, outside the ward.
Zoe Jenson, extremely worried about Alice, tried to sneak over and eavesdrop while Mason wasn’t looking.
She had only taken two steps before Mason’s gaze fell on her. He warned, "Miss Jenson, please stop right there."
Zoe gave a dry laugh and pointed at the door. "I won’t go in. I’ll just take a peek from out here."
"Third Master doesn’t like to be disturbed when he’s speaking with Miss Alice," Mason said. "That includes being out here."
Zoe zipped over to Mason like a gust of wind and asked tentatively, "What is it that Third Master Sterling discussing with Alice?"
Mason replied, and his face a blank mask, "I wouldn’t know."
Zoe pressed, "Third Master Sterling... he doesn’t hit people, does he?"
Mason shot Zoe a look. "You’re overthinking it, Miss Jenson. It’s not as serious as you imagine."
"So, Third Master Sterling didn’t come all this way just to see his ’little niece,’ did he?" Otherwise, Zoe Jenson really couldn’t think of any other reasonable explanation.
"And why not?" Mason retorted.
Zoe froze, then turned away, stroking her chin thoughtfully. ’What could possibly be going on between Alice and Third Master Sterling?’
’An uncle and his little niece...’
Back in the ward, the tension on Wyatt’s face eased slightly. He asked casually, "Are you getting used to the car?"
Alice, however, was completely baffled. "The car?"
’Is he talking about the one I drove from Shorecrest that morning?’ Alice thought.
As she puzzled over it, he stood up and sat on the edge of her bed as he moved closer. "Guess what Auntie Linden called and told me after you drove off."
Alice York’s heart suddenly clenched. "Auntie Linden... what did she say?"
Wyatt’s lips curved into a smirk as he patiently enjoyed watching her flimsy composure crumble. "A sick stomach to seafood. Ring any bells?"
"Yes," Alice York admitted. "I just don’t like the smell."
His voice deepened, with a clear warning spoken out. "Answer me properly."
Alice York retorted stubbornly, "You didn’t ask a direct question, Uncle."
Her attitude made Wyatt laugh in exasperation. "Did you buy a pregnancy test?"
Alice York didn’t answer.
"When?" he asked again.
Still, she said nothing. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
Wyatt hooked a hand around the nape of her neck, and forced her closer. Unable to withstand the pressure, she finally broke. "The day I went back to the family residence."
Wyatt’s eyes narrowed. ’No wonder she was stammering that night, saying she ’might be’ something without finishing the sentence.’
"Are you pregnant?" His palm moved slowly to cup the side of her face.
Alice’s expression was complicated. "What do you think, Uncle?"
The pad of his thumb grazed her cheek. "Think carefully before you answer."
"Do you think I planned this, Uncle? That I deliberately tried to get pregnant with your child?" Alice averted her face, unwilling to be so close to him.
Seeing her pull away, Wyatt withdrew his hand. "You wouldn’t dare."
Alice gave a self-deprecating laugh. "You know me so well, Uncle."
’But he was right, I wouldn’t dare.’ In the three years she’d been with him, she had always known her place. She never coveted the title of Mrs. Sterling, nor did she ever dream of using a child to secure her status.
Besides, their relationship had been unequal from the start. She had never deluded herself into thinking she could gain anything from him.
His scent enveloped her, making Alice deeply uncomfortable. The moment he pulled his hand away, she scrambled backward, treating him like a monster to be fled.
Wyatt shot her a cool glance. "Pathetic."
Alice bit back a retort. Her chin, where he had gripped it, still throbbed with pain.
Before coming in, Wyatt had already reviewed Alice York’s medical report. Acute gastritis. The symptoms had been obvious for days, but she had ignored them, treating her own health with indifference.
He watched her absently scratching the red mark on her chin, making it even redder. He flicked her hand away. "Take better care of yourself. Eat three meals a day, on time. Don’t be lazy."
Alice stared at him.
After a moment of conflicted hesitation, she finally asked the question that had been weighing on her mind. "If I really am pregnant, what are you going to do about it, Third Uncle?"
Wyatt didn’t answer, and turned the question back on her. "How do you want to handle it?"
She had risked everything to find out his stance, only for him to turn the question back on her.
Alice York seriously considered what answer would satisfy Wyatt. "Schedule an abortion as soon as possible."
Wyatt’s expression instantly turned cold.
Alice thought she must have said the wrong thing, but on second thought, she couldn’t see how.
She was being considerate and saving him the trouble. What was there for him to be unhappy about?
"Get some rest."
With a cold expression, Wyatt stood up to leave.
Alice immediately called out to him. "Uncle..."
The man didn’t break his stride.
"Wyatt Sterling!"
Alice grew frantic. She knew she shouldn’t press the issue, but she couldn’t let it go. As he was about to open the door, she blurted out, "You made me a promise that night. I expect you to keep your word."
His hand on the doorknob, the man turned back. His gaze was cold and distant. "What ever gave you the delusion that you were special?"
The door opened, then shut.
Wyatt Sterling was gone.
Alice snapped back to reality, her chest heaving. "...You didn’t have that look on your face when you were calling me ’good girl’ in bed!"
"Your Uncle gave you a hard time?"
The sudden sound of Zoe Jenson’s voice made Alice York jump. Her first thought was, ’Zoe only heard that last part, right?’
Just as she was getting nervous, she heard Zoe press on, "And what was that about a bed? And a ’good girl’?"
