After His Sweetheart Moved In, He Came Home Every Night-Chapter 10: Luring Body and Heart
When Alice woke up, she smelled the aroma of spicy crayfish.
When she opened her eyes, she saw Zoe sitting by her bed, slurping on crayfish, two at a time. Her mouth glistening with oil.
"Zoe, you know, hospital rooms are full of germs. It’s not very hygienic to eat like that."
Alice’s voice was weak, but it was loud enough for Zoe to notice she was awake.
Zoe, with cheeks puffed, turned her head. The moment she saw Alice was awake, she hurriedly grabbed a tissue to wipe her mouth and hands. "Alice, you’re awake!"
"How’re you feeling?"
"Do you still feel sick anywhere?"
"Much better." Alice did look much better. "What are you doing here?" she asked.
Zoe told her, "I called you first thing this morning, but that Dr. Sawyer answered. He told me what happened, so I rushed right over to the hospital to be with you."
Alice immediately asked, "Did he tell you what’s wrong with me?"
All she remembered was fainting in the middle of the night. Her heart had been pounding, she’d felt nauseous, and a chill had run through her entire body before she suddenly lost consciousness.
After wiping her hands, Zoe poured Alice a glass of warm water. "Dr. Sawyer said it’s acute gastritis."
Alice didn’t take the glass. Pushing herself up, she asked again for confirmation, "Just acute gastritis?"
"Yeah, what’d you think was wrong with you?" Zoe freed one hand to help Alice, then tucked a pillow behind her back so she could sit up more comfortably.
Once Alice had finished the water, Zoe sat back down to continue working on her crayfish.
She’d been scrolling through short videos earlier and got a craving after watching a food streamer, so she’d ordered herself some spicy crayfish. Alice had woken up right in the middle of her meal.
A little later, Dr. Sawyer came in. His expression relaxed considerably when he saw that Alice was awake. "You’re awake. Feeling any better?"
Alice looked toward Seth Sawyer. "Much better. Sorry for the trouble last night."
"Don’t mention it." Seth felt terrible about the whole thing.
From his tone, Alice guessed he probably knew she was being targeted by the Sterlings.
"Alice, have you been under a lot of stress lately?" Seth asked with a caring tone.
"What stress?" Alice said with a smile, shaking her head. "I’ve just been too lazy to take proper care of myself."
When Seth demanded answers after finding out Alice had fainted, the nurse finally stammered that someone from the top was putting pressure on her.
He knew where Alice came from—that she was connected to the Sterlings, the family behind the hospital. But he was just an outsider with no power or influence. There was nothing he could do.
Since Alice clearly didn’t want to talk about it, Seth didn’t press the issue. He only instructed her, "You can’t afford to be so casual about yourself anymore. You need to pay close attention to your diet from now on. Avoid anything raw, cold, heavy, greasy, or spicy..."
He was halfway through his instructions when his eyes fell on Zoe, who was busy slurping crayfish nearby.
Zoe noticed Dr. Sawyer looking at her and grinned. "Don’t worry, Doctor. This is all for me. I won’t let her have a single bite."
But Seth asked, "Do you know how some stomach problems develop?"
Zoe raised an eyebrow. "How?"
Seth said, "From seeing what you can’t eat."
What?
Seth explained, "Visual stimulation triggers the release of stomach acid. When your stomach starts working but no food follows, it’s essentially tricking it. The excess acid gradually damages the gastric lining, and that’s how stomach problems develop."
"..." Zoe silently packed away the rest of the crayfish and wiped her hands.
Alice was struggling to stifle her laughter from the sidelines.
As soon as Seth left, Zoe rushed over to Alice to complain. "I can tell that Dr. Sawyer doesn’t have a girlfriend."
Alice was surprised. "What makes you say that?"
Zoe said, "He’s so uptight. No woman would be into that stiff face of his."
’You’ve clearly never seen someone truly terrifying, like Wyatt Sterling,’ Alice thought and thought about telling her this.
Just as she was thinking that, Zoe cupped her face. "Alice, there’s something you still haven’t confessed to me."
After meeting Zoe’s eyes, Alice guiltily looked away, but a second later, Zoe turned her head back to face her.
"What are you so nervous about?" Zoe asked.
"I’m not nervous." Alice steeled herself. "Go ahead, ask."
Zoe had been holding it in for two days, and she took this chance to ask directly, "What’s the deal with that pregnancy test in your bathroom?"
Alice pressed her lips together.
Zoe squeezed the hands cupping Alice’s face, forcing her lips into a pout. "No dodging the question, and no making excuses. Fess up now, or face the consequences."
With a sigh, Alice pried Zoe’s hands away. She hesitated, and debated whether to tell the truth.
Zoe was impatient by nature. Seeing Alice stall, she decided to just ask outright, "Alice, did you think you were pregnant?"
Alice froze.
Her involuntary reaction only confirmed Zoe’s suspicions. "Did some guy lead you on and just use you? Is the scumbag refusing to take responsibility?" 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Well... Alice thought.
Zoe dropped her hands and stood up furiously. "I don’t even know what to say to you! My dearest Alice, how could you go through something this huge and keep it completely bottled up? Don’t tell me you’re still trying to protect that scumbag?"
Alice looked up, trying to explain. "It’s not..."
Zoe waved a dismissive hand, and cut off the explanation. "Just tell me. Who is the scumbag that lured your body and heart?"
The words had barely left her mouth when the door to the hospital room swung open.
Zoe’s expression soured. "Who is it? Don’t you know you’re supposed to knock before—"
She swallowed the last word.
She couldn’t believe who she was seeing!
Wyatt Sterling!
Alice’s Uncle!!
Zoe’s eyes went wide almost instantly, her expression a mask of indescribable shock.
Of course, Alice’s reaction wasn’t much better. She hadn’t expected to see Wyatt again so soon. ’Was he already at the hospital and just dropped by when he heard? Or did he come specifically to see me?’
Wyatt walked over, and Zoe immediately shuffled to the side to make way for him.
His gaze fell on Alice’s pale face. "Feeling unwell?"
The words were of concern, but his tone held none of it.
Zoe glanced at Alice’s reaction. Thankfully, Alice was calmer than she was.
"Acute gastritis. I’m on an IV, but I’m much better now." Alice looked up at the man’s stern face and, steeling herself, asked, "What brings you here, Uncle?"
Wyatt casually pulled over a chair and sat down. "I came to see you."
He didn’t specify whether he’d made a special trip or was just passing by.
The clueless Zoe, standing to the side, immediately chimed in, "Alice, your Uncle is so nice."
Well... Alice thought inwardly.
"Mason."
The door opened again, and Mason walked in. Wyatt said, "Escort Miss Jenson out."
Mason nodded and walked toward Zoe.
Zoe’s expression twitched. ’Why are they kicking me out?’
"Miss Jenson, if you would please step out for a moment. The Third Master would like to speak with Miss Alice." Mason’s gesture was polite enough.
But Zoe was uneasy and full of questions. She only followed Mason out reluctantly after Alice shot her a meaningful look.
’Fine. I’ll ask later.’
When the door closed, only Alice and Wyatt remained in the room.
They had gone their separate ways after that night. Alice had thought it would be difficult to see him again, yet here he was, only a day later.
Recalling what Mason had just said, Alice began apprehensively, "I wonder... what did you want to talk to me about, Uncle?"
Wyatt leaned back in his chair, his voice chillingly low. "The scumbag who lured your body and heart?"
Alice’s heart dropped.
Wyatt eyed her with a smirk. "Aren’t you going to explain this accusation?"
