Chapter 89: Chapter 89: What Are You Showing Off For, Is He Your Father?

Zhong Kang proudly dropped the name of this man, Erhu. It was as if Erhu were his own father, granting Young Master Zhong an unparalleled honor. He even subconsciously stuck his chin out, making sure everyone could see the exaggeratedly smug look on his face as he rode on someone else’s coattails.

"Why are you so smug? Is Wang Erhu your father?" Shen Fanyun retorted.

Su Xiyang almost burst out laughing. Shen Fanyun certainly had a knack for putting people in their place.

Zhong Kang stood there stunned. It took him a long moment to realize Shen Fanyun was mocking him. His face instantly flushed red, and he averted his gaze.

Strength respects strength. This was a universally acknowledged truth. Only your own power was the real deal; using someone else’s name to bolster your own reputation was ultimately a crooked path and, indeed, a clear sign of borrowing power.

"Brother Kang, why are you still wasting your breath on him?" Zhang Dong cried out from the floor, shivering. "This bastard ruined my hand! He’s not getting away without answering for it today! Beat him up!" The agonizing pain had him gritting his molars so hard they felt like they would shatter. It was excruciating—the worst pain he had ever experienced in his life.

"What’s all this commotion? What do you take this place for?" a commanding voice boomed across the bar, immediately sparking hushed conversations among the crowd.

"Well, well, looks like we’ve got a show. Lord Erhu is actually in the bar tonight."

"Picking a fight on Lord Erhu’s turf isn’t a smart move. That guy might have to crawl his way out of here."

Flanked by dozens of lean henchmen, a tall young man with a buzz cut advanced at a measured pace, his hands clasped behind his back. His eyes were cold, and a scar ran across his face. One look was all it took to know he was a ruthless man.

"Brother Erhu!" Zhong Kang’s eyes lit up as if he had just grasped a life-saving straw. The familiar address made it clear the two knew each other well. After all, Zhong Kang was a regular at the bar, dropping tens of thousands on every visit. He was one of their biggest benefactors, and in a world where everyone scrambles for profit, it was only natural for Wang Erhu to be warm toward a major patron who frequently lined his pockets.

"What’s wrong, Young Master Zhong?" Wang Erhu asked with a frown.

Zhong Kang replied, "This punk decided he didn’t like the look of us and started throwing punches. Look at my little brother here—his hand is crippled."

"So arrogant?" Wang Erhu raised an eyebrow. It was a novel sight to see someone causing trouble on his turf. With his hands still clasped behind him, Wang Erhu projected an intimidating aura without showing a trace of anger.

"Kneel and apologize," Wang Erhu commanded, staring coldly at Shen Fanyun. "Then, sever one of your arms and get the hell out of my club." He added, "Don’t even think about resisting. Otherwise, you might have walked in here alive, but you won’t be leaving that way."

Shen Fanyun feigned fear. "It’s just a small conflict, and you want to butcher me? You treat human life as worthless? You think you can kill whoever you want?"

At these words, Wang Erhu couldn’t help but laugh. "A worthless life like yours means nothing to me. If I really set my mind to killing you, you wouldn’t stand a chance."

"So merciless?" Shen Fanyun feigned disbelief. "I’m skeptical. I’m sure the law and order in Hangcheng City is quite good. You can’t just kill someone over a simple disagreement."

"Hahaha!" Wang Erhu let out a laugh of pure exasperation. "Young man, you’re far too simple and naive! I, Wang Erhu, am not just making idle threats. In the past, plenty of fools with no sense have mouthed off to me. And what do you think happened to them? I took care of them, quietly."

His words earned nods of agreement from the crowd; Wang Erhu’s reputation for cruelty was well-founded. He had no desire to waste any more time on Shen Fanyun. "Get on your knees and apologize, now!"

"The last person who acted so arrogantly in front of me was named Wang Laohu. Oh, that’s right, he’s your older brother," Shen Fanyun said, pulling out his phone and casually scrolling through it. "Come here." He beckoned, holding out the phone.

Wang Erhu’s brow furrowed into a deep line. This guy has had dealings with my brother? Judging by his tone, their encounter wasn’t a pleasant one.

His brother had recently been locked up for some inexplicable reason, and he still didn’t know the specifics. Then again, Wang Laohu had been thrown in jail so many times that Wang Erhu wasn’t worried. He was used to it. In the end, his brother always got out, alive and kicking, completely unharmed. He had planned to wait a few days before asking around, expecting Wang Laohu to return triumphant as always. Who would have thought that today he’d run into this stranger, Shen Fanyun, who had apparently crossed paths with his brother?

"What the hell is this?" Wang Erhu snatched the phone from Shen Fanyun and looked closely. He froze on the spot, his pupils widening in shock at the sight. On the phone was a video. A young man dressed in white was sitting on a sofa. Kneeling obediently beside him was a middle-aged man, his face bruised and swollen. The middle-aged man was trembling, his expression a mask of terror and unease, as if his soul had fled his body.

Is that... my own brother?

A wave of hot blood rushed to Wang Erhu’s head. He looked from Shen Fanyun’s face to the face of the young man in the video, barely able to contain his rage. "Fuck! What did you do to my brother?"

The onlookers were baffled. Zhong Kang was completely dumbfounded. Could Wang Laohu’s downfall really be connected to Shen Fanyun? This kid can’t possibly be that powerful, can he? He was utterly perplexed.

"I’ll kill you!" Wang Erhu roared.

The playful smile on Shen Fanyun’s face instantly vanished. His eyes turned as cold as ancient ice. The briefest glance from him sent a bone-chilling sensation through Wang Erhu.

"What did you say?" Shen Fanyun asked, though he had heard him perfectly well.

Wang Erhu gulped, his eyes fixed warily on Shen Fanyun.

Shen Fanyun suggested, "Why don’t you watch it again?"

Wang Erhu took a deep breath. Who the hell is this guy? How did he manage to make my vicious older brother kneel on the ground, slap his own face, and beg for forgiveness? My brother would never back down unless he met an opponent he couldn’t possibly handle. By that logic, if Shen Fanyun could humiliate my brother like that, he could easily do the same to me and bring about my own downfall! Sucking in a sharp breath as he connected the dots, his temper finally subsided. He no longer dared to shout or act arrogantly.

"Who exactly are you?" Wang Erhu asked, forcing himself to be calm.

Shen Fanyun gestured. "Come here, and I’ll tell you."

Wang Erhu took several steps forward, closing the distance between them.

Then Shen Fanyun instructed, "Squat."

Wang Erhu’s temper flared, but after a moment’s consideration, he reluctantly squatted in front of Shen Fanyun.

The crowd stared, their eyes wide with disbelief, as if they were dreaming. When had Wang Erhu ever been so obedient? Especially on his own territory?

However, in the next second, the entire crowd fell silent, as if they had witnessed something truly terrifying.

SLAP!

Shen Fanyun’s hand swung out, heavily striking Wang Erhu across the face.
