Chapter 400: Work During War [I]

The war has finally raged on. With Yona’s help, they can take a sneak peek at the situation in the harbor without going directly since it was currently unsafe being it was the center of the war and is considered the frontlines right now.

"Depending on how well prepared the faction that Miss Elaina’s sister and the church did, this will be a stalemate most of the time and a battle of attrition on which of the two sides will fall first. It might be safe to say that the one who is on the land is much more to the advantage compared to the ones who are on the boat," Yona comments as she looks at the situation unfolding between the two kingdoms.

"That would be the case if the church didn’t have other stuff aside from their ships, weapons, and personnel. Knowing how they are capable of doing various things from my experience, they might be hiding some big and troublesome spell which is why they are so confident in advancing. Of course, if that was indeed the case. Depending on how they can defend against the retaliation of the kingdom, they can either hold their ground long enough or sink into the waters before they can even do something," Elaina gave her opinion.

"Looks like you are well versed in war as well, Miss Elaina," Yona is surprised.

"Not really. Just the basics here and there. I was taught about it as part of the training before I became an empress. It’s all useless now that I am a farmer and not someone from royalty anymore."

Yona then turned off the magic spell and looked at the reaction of the kids. Seeing their shocked reactions is enough for Yona and Elaina to fully show how dangerous things are outside, especially for Arthur and Raye who seemed to be still planning to sneak out.

"Mom, are they going to kill each other there? Those spells and weapons they have been using are something I have read in the books as pretty much dangerous and can kill someone," Arthur asked.

Elaina nodded in response. "You are correct, my son. Which is why I am not going to let you kids go out of the farm until the situation has calmed down. Sure, we can protect you all in here, but outside, is already out of my power to do so. Please, listen to me this time around."

The two boys nodded. They do have a plan to sneak out even during the previous warning Elaina made before the war broke out but seeing the situation from the spell, they are not daring to go out and be mixed with the chaos. With how many books they read before, they have a basic understanding of what those weapons they saw were and seeing them being used in close proximity is bringing fear in their hearts.

"Told you two. Sneaking out will do you more harm. Mother is practically begging and if you decide to disobey her, you two will be in danger and Mother will have to put herself in harm’s way again just to save the two of you. Just because you two have been training under Mother’s guidance doesn’t mean that is already enough to save yourself from troubles most of the time. Spare Mother from the trouble, alright?" Adelaide firmly said to the two.

"Hey, Sis. Why are you reprimanding me this much? Aren’t you and the others also part of the reminder as well? Why are you just focusing on us?"

"Well, who from all of us likes to sneak out making Mother angry most of the time, hmm? Certainly not the girls and certainly not me," Adelaide gave Arthur a smug look.

"Alright, that’s enough. Fighting will get you nowhere. Anyways, be sure to follow my words, alright?"

The two nodded...for real this time around.

With the war in the background ongoing, Elaina decided to focus on doing new things on the farm. This time, building something. Since the war declaration began, the Woodworks has been temporarily closed and Jacob is currently volunteering to help the army create the barracks, prepare the towers, and many other construction projects. Elaina can’t blame him though as he is being paid handsomely for his work. Even if he is volunteering himself, the kingdom is generous enough to not let go of this kind of action and let it go to waste.

So this time, Elaina decided to do something on her own and not rely on Jacob for once. Holding the hammer and nail, she began to hammer down the project she was making.

"This is harder than I thought."

"That’s why I said it’s not an easy task, Boss. Just because it looked easy when watching me do it, doesn’t mean it was that easy to do," Curaj said to Elaina who was watching her do the work on the side.

"It’s alright. I just wanted to do some handwork for a while. It’s not fair to keep relying on everyone to do the work."

Although what Elaina said is partially true, her true purpose for doing this is to unlock the Carpentry page on the Almanac. These past few years, Elaina has been working on fulfilling the requirements of each page. She has been focusing these past few years are the Instrument and Music Pages and Smithing pages. Although the instrument and music pages have been slow, the smithing pages are very hard and Elaina thinks she would just give up on it if she is not able to even unlock it which is why she switched to the carpentry skill as she thought it was a bit more easier than smithing. She is correct for sure, but it wasn’t easy to master. Sure, hammering a nail on the wood is not that hard, but creating a stable project like a table and chair is not easy for a beginner.

"Here boss, hammer this in place. It will fall if you don’t secure it."

Elaina followed suit and is being helped by Curaj. As for what she is making, she is making the so-called "Slime Hutch" that Yona has made before. She purchased a blueprint from Jacob back when things were still peaceful and wanted to have her own slime hutch for her slimes to live on, however, realizing the cost, she decided that a blueprint would suffice and she would just build it herself. Elaina didn’t know about this until recently.

Of course, she planned to make a slime hutch back then but since the discovery of the war, Elaina has postponed that notion and focused on developing the farm. She can’t afford the war to ruin her business after all.

"I think that should be enough for the day. Carpentry is hard," Elaina said as they finished creating the skeletal framework of the slime hutch.

"Are you going to do this again tomorrow, boss? I can help out again if you want," Curaj asked.

"Not tomorrow. I will be going to the labyrinth to finish a few things there. Maybe the day after tomorrow."

Curaj nodded and bid Elaina farewell. As for Elaina, she went to the tool shed and grabbed her fishing rod and her stored bait to fish. She needed to relax for tomorrow, she would have to go inside the labyrinth and deal with the bosses in the labyrinth.

It has been a while since she entered the place and she still remembers how big it is compared to regular dungeons and how she wished the monsters there was possible to be tamed. Of course, that is just wishful thinking since those monsters were not true monsters and just monsters that are made by the labyrinth itself.

She has only cleared the first strata and according to the news relating to the labyrinth, the lowest strata that has been explored so far is the 20th strata. For Elaina though, she has only explored the first so knowing that there are further floors deeper, Elaina is a bit worried that things will get harder in the future especially with no more adventurers for the time being. She will have to do things double time.

Which is why for now, she has to wind up herself and enjoy herself before the stress comes tomorrow. After all, work is not yet done. She can’t rest just yet.
