A Single Mother's Farm of the Gods-Chapter 398: Declaration of War
Chapter 398: Declaration of War
A few days after the arrival of the Cacao and Coffee, an announcement shattered the long-time peace that the Darcero Kingdom enjoyed for centuries. Soldiers are handing out notices to the public regarding the declaration of war. Those notices are now on the table, and everyone is currently looking at them with a grim expression.
"So it has finally arrived," Rakkan sighed as he shook his head in disappointment.
"Considering it still happened after we know the information of the upcoming war, this is no longer a surprise," Troy only shrugs as he leans back on the sofa.
"But the kingdom is prepared. And that’s all that matters. Even the citizens are also informed in advance about the upcoming war, and it allows them to plan ahead on whether they will stay or evacuate once the war starts to rage on," Elaina commented as well.
"They are prepared indeed. But it would have been better if the war didn’t happen at all. Considering it was due to the whims of your sister, things would have eased up if your sister realized her mistakes and whatever she was thinking beforehand," Rakkan scratches his head in frustration.
"We can’t do anything about it. If we consider what happened to the Emperor himself, there’s a huge likelihood that Selena was also brainwashed and as a result of this brainwashing, has also become a puppet of the casters themselves. She might not be thinking about herself," Liliana seems to still be hopeful about Selena.
"Either way, it doesn’t matter much to me whether they do it or not. Even if the war rages on, I will continue to remain on my farm. I will defend it with my life," Elaina said herself.
"Are you really serious about that, Elaina? You know that this war will not be just a regular fighting enemies. We are fighting humans right now," Liliana looks worried at Elaina.
"No worries, Grandmother. I can manage just fine. I believe in myself and I believe in the power of everyone else. And besides, I also believe in the kingdom’s strength to repel the enemies. With 7 years’ worth of preparation, even if the enemies came prepared, everyone was also ready to defend the peace of the land. Aren’t you two even participating as well?"
Rakkan grinned and put both of his hands on his waist with a boastful chest puff, he proclaimed, "Even if me and my wife are already retired heroes, that doesn’t mean we are no longer heroes ourselves. We can still fight and if it is to protect the safety of the people and the innocents, then we will not hesitate to help out as well.
"We know Grandpa, so stop with the chest puff. We know you have big pectorals so stop showing it off, you are kinda making me insecure with my figure. Anyways, Elaina, I heard about this news that you are going to become the main supplier of the Army for food and ingredients once the war starts raging on. Is this the reason you are going to remain on the farm? Even the business you inherited from our parents is going to be partnering up with the kingdom and the local market soon. Does that mean you already planned this out?" Troy jokes at his grandpa for a bit before shifting to a serious question to Elaina.
Elaina nodded. "You are right. Considering that according to the news I received, even the other farmers will be evacuated while the war rages on, things will get dire if no one will supply the kingdom and the army that will repel the enemies. And with them gone for a while, food production will be limited. And a way to solve that is someone supplying them. And since even if the war rages on, I will still continue to farm, producing food just the same as before. That will also solve the fear of losing food supply in the future."
The Seven years’ worth of farming did not go to waste. By now, Elaina is quite capable of what things need to be done to continue producing food from this point onwards. It’s not like she is just doing nothing and just relying on the power of the Almanac to proceed.
"By the way, Elaina. Now that the situation with the war is now underway, adventurers will be helping out with the war so the dungeons and the labyrinth will be abandoned for a bit which will also mean that they will be going to be empty most of the time. There will still be adventurers who will be visiting to occasionally visit and clear the places but with the war, it will be harder. Considering the labyrinth is a lot stricter in terms of maintaining it, can you please do it until then? Explore and clear strata regularly to avoid monsters from breaking out," Rakkan pleaded to Elaina.
"It is fine. And considering I do need to maintain the labyrinth itself to avoid bosses from appearing and wrecking the dungeon farm, that would be necessary work for me anyway."
Then, Yona entered the farmhouse and sat down on the sofa next to Liliana. She looks tired for some reason.
"What’s wrong, Yona? You seemed tired?"
"Haha, was my face obvious? Well, I was maintaining the magic barrier that Julia left behind. She already gave me the task that I have to do this every year to ensure that the farm will be safe from any harm done. You might not have seen me maintain it since I usually do it whenever everyone is asleep. However, after I heard that the war was going to start raging soon, I decided to reinforce the defensive spell further. I even expanded it further to the new land you bought recently as a way to keep it also safe. But it was a taxing job which is why I am looking so tired right now."
Hearing this, Elaina smiled softly remembering Julia. Although it has been 7 years since Julia went on her own pilgrimage, Elaina is not worried and is certain that she will return back home someday. Maybe not now, but later on. And by then, maybe Julia has changed a lot and she will probably not recognize her anymore.
"Julia really did make the farm safe for years even when she is not here. And thanks to Yona here to keep it maintained and functioning, even if she is not present to keep the defenses stable, everyone is safe thanks to her and to Yona’s efforts. But can we be certain about these defenses against the upcoming war?" Rakkan looked at Yona, waiting for an explanation.
"It should. Although she didn’t specifically state what kind of stuff will be blocked by it, since she left after learning that the war is going to happen, she already must have modified it to the point that even cannonballs and gun projectiles will just bounce off from the farm. Of course, there is no certainty. Until the defenses reveal themselves, then I can’t really say much," Yona shakes her head.
Liliana looked at Rakkan and assured him. "Don’t worry. Do we even have to let those things come in contact with the Darcero Kingdom? With the Kingdom and the Adventurer’s Guild working together to defend the borders of the kingdom, we will ensure things will be safe to the point that even the barriers prepared by Julia will not be triggered to function since we just blocked them all."
Elaina watches as the group continues to discuss things and make the topic about the upcoming war, light. However, she knows that things are not that light. They are just doing it to ensure that everything will be safe and considering that the children are also listening to them which she can spot on the second floor, it is a good way to fool them and give them confidence that things will be okay.
With the war about to engulf Darcero Kingdom in chaos, the land will stop the peaceful era and people will be limited in staying in their safe havens soon. Some will even abandon their dwellings and move to other places just to avoid this war. After all, no one wants war. Every citizen hates wars and considering that they are just usually dragged to it because of the selfish wish of someone, they might have understood.
But this time, it is a war for their freedom. A war that will allow them to keep on believing what they believe without being dictated by someone. And considering the other faction is dedicated in converting the populace to their sick religion, the public soon understood why this war is necessary.
Of course, Elaina will ensure that things will work as intended. Just because there is a war happening doesn’t mean that she will just stop doing what she always does. As a farmer, she will continue doing what she always does best. And not even war can stop her from doing what needs to be done.
