Chapter 392: Brothers

"GAH!"

Arthur’s body was sent flying in a distance as he tried to block an attack from the raging monster. He tried to defend using the sword that he took from his mother but he can’t use it and got bodied by the monster instead.

"Arthur!" Raye shouted on the hiding spot.

"Idiot! Don’t draw the monster’s attention like that!" Despite getting injured, Arthur quickly stand back up from the fight and immediately repositioned himself between the monster and where Raye was currently hiding.

"I knew things are going to be a bad idea when you said you wanted to challenge a monster to a battle! It would have been great if you challenge a weaker one but you instead took to challenge this tiger-like monster!" Raye complained to Arthur who caused this current predicament they are experiencing right now.

"Alright, alright, I know it is my fault so please just stop talking about it, okay?! I needed to focus on this monster for now!"

Despite getting annoyed by what Raye said, it is indeed true that he was the main cause of this predicament. If he had been good enough to not steal the sword and proceed to challenge a monster beyond on what he can fight then perhaps things would be different. He tried to pull out the sword again from the scabbard and yet the sword remained unchanged and remained inside the scabbard like it was pinned inside. There were no mechanisms on the sword and scabbard that would stick its blade completely without even getting unsheathed in any way.

The tiger monster didn’t attack immediately and just sized him up. It was like it was mocking him for being unable to even take out the sword off from his scabbard.

"Ha, are you trying to mock me, you beast? Just because I wasn’t as strong as my Mom, doesn’t mean I am going to back down from you."

Despite the sword refusing to cooperate, he readies the sword, ready to swing it like a blunt object.

"Come here. I will beat you up with this blunt edge of the sword."

The beast, seemingly mocking seemed to grin and attacked Arthur with a swift lunge. Arthur took his time to look at the gaps of the beast and when he saw it, he timed it right and used all his strength to swing the sword down to the upcoming beast.

BANG!

A square hit to the head, causing the beast to get repelled and was sent stumbling after the lunge attack.

"GOTCHA!"

The attack seemed to have been quite effective since the monster reeled and staggered for a bit. Seeing this development, Arthur didn’t stop and decided to attack again. Even when he was struggling at first, he was trying his best to beat it up before the beast can even do anything.

"Take this!"

BANG!"

Another direct hit but this time, it wasn’t as strong as the previous attack. Perhaps because Arthur’s attack was a lot less powerful when hitting it regularly. It was stronger during the first strike as Arthur timed it with the beast’s lunge so the two clashing power just ended up becoming harmful for the beast in the process. With regular attack by Arthur, it was very weak that it isn’t an impactful attack compared to the first.

The beast recovers from staggering and quickly slam Arthur with its paws and sent him flying to a nearby tree.

"ARGH!"

Arthur has been through a lot of pain during his childhood. Falling from a tree and getting scraped in the knee are both equally painful but he managed to last through that pain but this time, it wasn’t a joke. The pain he is experiencing right now is full multiplication of the pain he experienced when he fell from the Apple Tree when he tried to grab a few apples for himself.

"RAYE! RUN AND GO BACK HOME! TELL MOTHER AND SAVE YOURSELF!"

"NO WAY ARTHUR! I WILL NOT LEAVE! I WILL HELP!"

Raye who was hiding in the nearby bush jumped out from it and aimed both his hands to the beast.

"FIREBALL!"

BANG!

A small fireball shoot out of his hands and hit the beast. However, it was like the beast did not even notice the attack. It ignored the fireball and just continue on its way to Arthur who is still reeling from the pain.

"Damn! Please work! FIREBALL! FIREBALL! FIREBALL!"

Raye continues to produce fireballs and attacking the beast but like before, the beast barely acknowledges what happened and just looked at Arthur who tried his best to stand.

With him struggling to get up, the beast slowly walks up to him, his mouth seems to shape like it was grinning. Then the beast opened its mouth...and started speaking.

"Impressive for a human kid. To think I will be easily staggered by a kid in one attack. A real impressive thing indeed and this happened right after I woke up from many years of sleep. If you have grown a few more years and perhaps a bit more muscle would have been a good idea. But right now, you are just a runt. And a runt like you will become a big problem for me to take over the throne as the king of this forest. You should say your prayers because I don’t like leaving loose ends for me. It’s better to nip the bud of something blossoming like you before things gets real worse."

"Y-you...you know how to speak?!" Arthur struggled but he looked at the beast in an indescribable look on his face.

"Hoh? A human who can understand my words? Heh, now it seemed like I am getting interested in you, little runt. But this is quite a predicament indeed. Should I rather let you live or perhaps I shall continue with my previous plan?"

Even with the struggle, he finally stood up and readies the sword again on his hand, huffing while trying to endure the pain in his body.

"Don’t mock me and pity me! If you are a man, fight me!"

The beast grinned. "I see, you are more eager to die than I thought. Very well, can’t afford to not grant a wish of someone so young. Well then, even though your talent is great, its not like I can’t live without anyone understanding me."

Raising his paws, the beast is ready to attack and end Arthur in one strike.

"Arthur! Run!" Raye shouted as he tried his best to damage the beast only for his attacks to not even work against the monster.

Realizing this, Arthur felt his knees grow weak. He also felt like his life went past his mind just now.

"Mom...I am sorry..."

Raye bit his lip. He wanted to help Raye so much and yet he can’t even help him out on his troublesome enemy. What is he going to do? However, he wouldn’t want to give up just yet. But all of a sudden, Raye who is powerless about the situation felt a strong rage in his mind right now. And a voice in his head that seems to talk to him.

"[Do you need power to beat the adversary that you are dealing with?]"

When Raye blinks, he found himself in a dark space. He was just around the forest before and is witnessing the final attack that the beast is about to do but right now, he is not seeing anyone else.

"Where am I?"

"[Where else? This is your subconscious. You tapped into your hidden power after seeing the adversity that is too much for your own power and decided that you will be borrowing what you have hidden.]"

"I see now. Are you perhaps the power of the Devil Race that my mother has been telling me ever since I can understand?"

"[Well now, I guess you do know about it. Good for your Mother to explain things for you. Little need for me to explain things.]" the voice said, seemingly amused.

"Mother made sure to know that I was an adopted child and I am not a human. She wanted me to know that even if I was like this, I was still her son and why I needed to hide my true identity, but so what?"

"[Of course. Your relationship with your foster family is great. And I appreciate that relationship a lot as that is enough for you to easily tap on your hidden potential without problem. Are you frustrated right now that your pathetic magic is nothing for the beast? Are you frustrated that you cannot beat something like that on your own?]"

"Yes. I am powerless, but I still wanted to help Arthur. I don’t want him to die here. Mother will be sad, Ade will be sad, Layla will be totally sad about this as well, and I will not forgive myself if something happened to him."

"[If that is the case, why not awaken your power? Use it and unleash your rage.]"

Raye hesitates for a bit. However, remembering the moment, he is not in an option to hesitate right now.

"So if I use this power, I will get corrupted eventually?"

"[Who knows? This is your power, I am just your subconscious telling you all about this. Ultimately, it is your own choice.]"

With this, Raye grits his teeth.

"Alright, bring it on."

"[Heh, my pleasure!]"

As soon as the voice faded, Raye felt the burning energy in his body. Horns starts to grow on his forehead and a wing appeared behind his back.

Then, he returned to the scene earlier. He didn’t think twice and before the beast can bring down the paws that is currently aimed at Arthur, Raye took action and in a quick movement grab the paw of the beast and forcibly held it before hurling the beast into the nearby tree, slamming the monster hard.

Arthur was shocked when he saw the new look of Raye before him.

"R-Raye?!"

Raye looked at Arthur and nodded. "I got your back, Brother. Together we shall bring down this monster down!"

Arthur might be shocked by the situation but he quickly recovered and readies the sword. "You are right, time to make a comeback!"

The two brothers stood side by side, ready to fight. Meanwhile, Elaina and the others are still a bit farther into the distance. The two will need to fight a bit more on their own for now.
