My Scheming Little Devil

"Read some books to pass the time; the people here aren’t very educated, most are illiterate. It’s rare that Mei’s husband happens to be a university graduate, the only cultured one in the village, and they have bought quite a few books at home!"

Ling Kong raised his eyebrows in quite a surprise.

A university graduate and a group of illiterates naturally belong to two different worlds, with hardly any common topics to share. He had just squatted beside those villagers, listening to their conversations.

He also roughly knew about Mei’s husband, Xie Wen, and some of his affairs. It’s said that the man was matched with Mei in an arranged marriage, and just two days after marrying her, he left to do business elsewhere.

This made the villagers quite dissatisfied. They felt that Xie Wen looked down on Mei, thinking she was uneducated and not worthy of a scholar like him. That equated to looking down on them too. Xie Wen usually had little to do with them, and his words even subtly suggested that he thought of them as ignorant and backward.

It made them hold a grudge. Tonight, coming to Mei’s house, they conspired to cure Xie Wen of his arrogance, to force him to drink heavily, to ridicule and humble the pride of this educated man, to see if he would dare to look down on the people of their village again.

After a while, Mei and Xie Wen walked in, Mei’s face radiant with joy and shyness.

That Xie Wen, tall and with a commanding presence, indeed had a different air from the rustic villagers. Even his walk had an aura that set him apart, instantly drawing all eyes to him as he entered, including those of surprise, discontent, and frustration.

Ye Lu couldn’t help but look up from his book, his gaze involuntarily following the man under the lamplight whose composed demeanor did not fit the rustic atmosphere.

"How come Mei is so happy, what were you doing just now in the yard? It was pitch-dark, didn’t you roll around in the field, could you even find the hole?" a slick villager immediately joked, his eyes and words filled with insinuation, and he leered at the couple.

Ye Lu’s heart unexpectedly prickled, and watching the man, he saw that he showed little emotion.

Mei laughed and scolded in a coy voice: "It’s just your idle talk, spouting nonsense. My Ah Wen is a cultured person, he does not stoop to your level."

She looked up at Xie Wen with affection in her eyes, her tone filled with pride and triumph. Her husband indeed was different from those boorish village louts, cultured and handsome like the male leads from TV dramas that she had seen, brimming with merits that made her heart filled with admiration.

Especially after this comeback, she felt he became even more appealing.

When she first married him, he was very indifferent to her and saw her as an unworthy match, haughty and beyond reach. Before getting married, she was elated, thinking about marrying a university graduate, which was cause for high expectations.

But after getting married, she realized it was nothing like she had imagined. This man was like a cold, hard rock, solitary and arrogant, and his glances unintentionally conveyed disdain, making her feel frustrated and depressed inside.

But now, after a few months, he seemed to have changed quite a bit. Of course, she didn’t know much about his original character, since he went out just two days after she came to his house.

The previous him, at best made her admire him a bit for his education. But later, his aloofness made that admiration disappear.

But the him now, made her feel that being with him, just having a conversation, could make her blush and her heart race, feeling his allure, unable to take her eyes off him, her heart and vision filled with him. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

She never knew that his voice when speaking was so pleasant, sometimes gentle like spring rain, sometimes severe and full of authority, even more commanding and impressive than the village head or even the town mayor.
