Captured By The Cold Detective (BL) - Chapter 199: Dead End
After saying those disturbing sentences, Nurse Chen kept his mouth shut and refused to utter any additional words, making Tak Jung-Hwa so frustrated that he almost died of curiosity.
XIU? Soft-hearted? Tak Jung-Hwa scoffed. Were they even talking about the same person? How could that guy be soft-hearted?
That year when they fought, Tak Jung-Hwa had clearly discerned the arrogance and apathy in XIU’s eyes. Those were the eyes of someone who did not care about humans’ lives at all, someone who could play with life and death as if they amounted to nothing, someone with sky-high pride who thought that others were beneath him. Tak Jung-Hwa couldn’t be mistaken about it.
Now he began to suspect that Nurse Chen had only said something like that to mislead him. How ridiculous.
Sneering, Tak Jung-Hwa went to seek his two comrades and found that they were already halfway through asking the nurses and residents who often came into contact with Mr. Qin. Unfortunately, the information they could find was abysmal.
Qin Zhen was not the kind of person who liked to socialize with others. Everytime he came, he merely sat with his father for around ten minutes before leaving. They did not even realize that he had been replaced by an imposter.
Tak Jung-Hwa told the other two officers about Nurse Chen’s statement, saying how ’Qin Zhen’ had gone into the bathroom twice on his last visit. Though it might not mean anything at all, they agreed that there was something suspicious about it. Thus they went to Director Duan again and asked to see the surveillance footage.
Alas, they met another dead end.
Kang Guanyu exclaimed in shock, "No CCTV around there?!"
Heping Nursing Home was renowned for its best facility nurses and stringent system, hence the expensive fee. Once in a while, family members might request a security camera to be installed inside the resident’s room in case they were afraid that an abuse would happen, but such a thing had never happened in this nursing home before. That’s why usually, the CCTVs would only be placed for a short period of time before it was dismantled. As for the security cameras from the nursing home itself, there were only three – on the corridor leading to the Admin’s office, on the living room facing the front door, and the parking lot. Even the Director’s office did not have one.
The aforementioned CCTV’s range did not include the bathroom on the first floor, and they could not verify Nurse Chen’s statement at all!
"I truly apologize about this..." Director Duan let out an awkward cough. "This place has been built for more than a decade, but there hasn’t been any accident so far. I... I didn’t expect that something like this would happen! How about I install one from now on?"
Tak Jung-Hwa let out a dry chuckle. What was the use of installing one now? It was not like the imposter was going to come back here. "It’s alright. No need to trouble you, Director Duan," he patted the chubby man’s shoulder in reassurance. "We’re just asking."
Next, they reviewed the surveillance footage in the parking lot two months ago and caught sight of the imposter coming out of Heping Nursing Home, getting into his car before driving away. Putting the imposter’s appearance aside, their mannerism, the way they walked, even their micro body language... everything was so natural! This acting skill was practically flawless!
Even Tak Jung-Hwa could not say for certain that he would be able to identify the imposter if they met face-to-face...
"Is that Qin Zhen’s car?" Tak Jung-Hwa asked while pointing at the car the imposter climbed into. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
"Uh-huh, that’s it." Kang Guanyu snapped a picture of the car and sent it to the traffic police, asking them to track the whereabouts as soon as possible.
Tak Jung-Hwa’s face sank. This person had assumed Qin Zhen’s identity, withdrew his money and even drove his car... if not because they had found Qin Zhen’s corpse, this person could have roamed the world freely and nobody would think that anything’s wrong with it! The more he thought about it, the more terrifying it became. Exactly what kind of person were they dealing with here...?
After they copied this footage, they went out of Director Duan’s office and met up with Mu Yuze who was checking the bathroom on the first floor. "Anything suspicious?" Kang Guanyu asked.
"The water level in the toilet tank..." Mu Yuze said with a frown. "It looks a little off to me. It’s like someone has taken something out from there."
Startled, Kang Guanyu and Tak Jung-Hwa crowded into the bathroom and sure enough, the water level in the toilet tank was low!
Speechless, Kang Guanyu turned to give Mu Yuze a thumbs up. The bathroom looked very normal at a glance. Who would have thought to check inside the toilet tank? And if Mu Yuze had not pointed it out, he would not have been able to tell that something was off about this! As expected, nothing could escape the eyes of Violent Crime Division’s walking ice cube!
Tak Jung-Hwa immediately went out to ask Director Duan and the Admin about it. Once again, the answer they received was disheartening. "I’m so sorry, officers, I really have no idea about this," the Admin hastily apologized with a grimace. "Usually, we will just call the plumber if the toilet isn’t working. I don’t even realize the water level in the toilet tank is abnormal!"
As for Director Duan, he was even more clueless than her.
The Admin’s answer was very justifiable, but they just could not help but get frustrated. There was no CCTV around the bathroom, so they could not even confirm whether Mu Yuze’s conjecture was true. Let’s say that someone had really taken something out from the toilet tank, how were they supposed to find out who it was? What about the item? What kind of thing could be hidden in such a place? It was not like they could ransack this place upside down!
They had spent more than five hours in this place, but in the end, all they got was the fact that Qin Zhen had once come out to his father about his intention to marry a man, and the surveillance footage of the imposter driving Qin Zhen’s car away. They did not even know the name of Qin Zhen’s secret lover!
"Augh!" Kang Guanyu flailed his limbs around wildly once they returned to the car, just like a child throwing tantrums. Then he abruptly straightened up and asked the other two with a frown, "Is it just me? Why do I feel like we’re being teased? Dangle all these clues in front of us only to let us meet a dead end again and again! And I’m more upset by the fact that I can’t find anything about Qin Zhen’s secret lover when I did a background check on him!"
Tak Jung-Hwa glanced at him in surprise. He never expected that Kang Guanyu, who looked goofy and had a happy-go-lucky personality, would be so sharp as to notice something like this too soon. He, too, already had a feeling that their opponent was playing around with the police since they found Qin Zhen’s corpse.
"Don’t worry, you’re not alone," Tak Jung-Hwa told him in camaraderie. "I also feel the same."
"No way, Hyung. You too?!" Kang Guanyu was invigorated after getting one supporter. He turned to the man in the driver’s seat who had remained silent ever since they got into the car. "What about you, Mu Yuze?"
"Hmm?" Mu Yuze blinked, puzzled.
Kang Guanyu wailed, "You’re not listening to me at all!"
"No... I’m just thinking, have we gotten all of the contact information? Even Nurse Chen’s?"
Kang Guanyu patted his chest, proud. "Don’t worry, your brother here has already recorded everything!"
"Okay," he turned on the engine and gave a careless answer. "Send it to me later." He could not get close to Nurse Chen for fear of attracting Tak Jung-Hwa’s suspicion. Seven years ago, they had indeed met a few times, but Mu Yuze was certain that the other man would not be able to recognize him now. He knew very well how capable and cautious He Juan’s men were. If he wanted to find out what had caused He Juan to lose his memory and the things that had happened seven years ago, he had to plan his course of action first before confronting Nurse Chen!
"What’s wrong?" Tak Jung-Hwa raised a brow, curious. "Did you find something?"
Toward him, Mu Yuze’s answer was always cold and curt, "No."
Once again, Kang Guanyu sharply perceived the faint scent of smoke and gunpowder in the air. He glanced at the two men back and forth and scratched his head in confusion. As far as he knew, Tak Jung-Hwa and Mu Yuze had no prior interaction before this, so... where did this enmity come from? However, for fear that he would offend either one of them, he sensibly refrained from asking questions despite almost dying from curiosity.
He cleared his throat to break the subtle tension in the air. "Okay, guys. So... what now?"
