Chapter 280: What is a Glyphborne?

Now, it is no secret that Belladonna is a bit of an airhead. It had been a title that had been attributed to her throughout her entire life, especially when she was easily distracted in her school days. There were many things that she forgot, overlooked or simply didn’t think about until it slapped her in the face.

Her class was one of those things.

What exactly was a Glyphborne? The name itself ’Glyphborne’ rather simply meant someone that bore glyphs on their body. In Belladonna’s case, she did that by carving them in with her magic pen, which was her version of a wand.

However that didn’t really say much more to what she could do or why it was such an unusual class. Although she had not interacted with players to a massive degree, she had been on the forums a lot and had seen many different class discussions.

Glyphborne was never one of them. So what made it so unique? Was it even unique, or simply undiscovered? These questions had flew over Belladonna’s head until now, when they were slapping her in the face in the form of Vestra’s question.

If she could give her runes and glyphs to others, would that make them Glyphborne too? If so, it seemed like her class was a bit rubbish. However if she couldn’t, then that would naturally raise the question of why not?

It was enough to get Belladonna’s scientific, and slightly mad, mind whirring with the possibilities and questions.

"You know, I never actually thought about it. So I’m not entirely sure." She admitted honestly, because there was no reason to hide it. However a moment after her honesty, her face twisted into her signature devilish, trouble-making smile.

"You wanna find out? I can’t promise that you won’t blow up."

Vestra bit her lip, thinking over it for a few seconds, before nodding confidently and thrusting out her hand.

Belladonna laughed softly, grabbing Vestra’s hand and letting the small girl drag her along the stones as she started to work, her feet still ice to make it effortless to move her.

Taking out her pen, Belladonna muttered the magic word of ’Inkus’ to activate it, before pressing it against Vestra’s palm. The illusionist hissed through gritted teeth, as the pain system refused to dull even the smallest nick from Belladonna’s pen.

A few of the other members naturally heard Vestra’s whimpers of pain and glanced over their shoulders to see what was going on. The sight of Belladonna hunched over Vestra’s palm was certainly a curious one, but they couldn’t all lower their guard in a dungeon. Not all of them were carefree idiots, like some people.

It only took Belladonna a few minutes to finish, as she was keeping it nice and simple for their test run. She brushed away the few droplets of blood that had formed on Vestra’s palm, and cleaned off the resulting glyph carving as she admired her work.

Considering their environment, Belladonna had given Vestra a carving for an icicle attack.

"There we go, ready to fight." Belladonna said with a smile, letting Vestra look at her work of art,

"Now we just need something for you to test it against. If only we were in a place that was filled with an endless amount of respawning enemies..." She sighed and shook her head, as if to say ’whatever are we going to do’ before the two of them broke into smiles and laughed between them.

Naturally, it wasn’t long before a group of eager volunteers entered their view. A group of strange little demons were mingling around a pool of lava.

They were like little red, fleshy bowling balls, as they seemed to be exclusively a head without any type of body. Everything else was glued onto his head, making it seem rather crowded, especially since what was there was oversized even for a normal creature.

They had a singular eye that took up 80% of their face, and a wide mouth that took up the remaining 20%. Their mouth stretched back so wide that if they opened their mouth to its fullest, they would become a semi circle.

How a stomach came into play here, Belladonna had no idea. They also had a pair of small horns sprouting from above their massive eye, and a pair of stubby, baby-like arms underneath their mouths. Somehow, despite how weak these arms looked, they managed to hold and carry a two meter long guisarme - a spear with an extra curved blade acting as a hook.

Finally, on their backs, they had a set of leathery wings that were twice as long as their spherical bodies, which allowed them to use the wings as legs to stand on whenever they weren’t flying.

Players had named these ’Eye-Spies’, as they were incredibly common on this first level.

The Eye-Spies hadn’t detected them yet, thus it became the perfect chance for Vestra to test her carving and kite them over.

Stepping forwards, she held up her hand with her fingers spread, before taking a deep breath and pouring her mana into the glyph. Belladonna stood to her side, her mana vision activated, as she watched the entire process carry itself out.

She could see the mana flowing through Vestra’s arm and into the glyph, watching how it changed its elemental affinity into ice, and then started to pull itself together into physical form, as an icicle started to form in the air.

The icicle itself glittered beautifully in Belladonna’s mana vision, as it was a crystalline structure composed entirely of mana, however amongst the magnificent glittering she could see some wayward flits of mana.

Vestra’s mana was overflowing from her body and seeping into the air, as it always did whenever she used her abilities, it was nothing unusual. But that mana in the air tickled at the glyph, and started to be affected by it also.

It all happened in an instant. The trickles of wayward mana started to rapidly freeze into icicles, trying to obey the glyph that it was accidentally reactivating. At the same time, the glyph, overwhelmed by the multiple different activation, started to collapse.

In real time, the forming icicle - which had been smooth and dagger-like - suddenly grew a mess of new branches, before it collapsed into itself and exploded into a cloud of white, frozen air, sending miniature shards of spiked ice into the air all around Vestra’s hand.

The main body of which speared directly into Vestra’s outstretched fingers and palm, as she had been essentially holding an ice grenade.
