THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS
Chapter 168: At The Park
The special needs children were the first to be led into the park.
As soon as they approached the playground, their twinkling eyes were like stars, illuminating their excited faces.
"Hey, guys! Look at all the fun things they’ve set up for us today," a child in a wheelchair screamed in delight as he made a dash with his wheelchair towards the playground.
Kathleen and Candace held the hands of their children as they entered into the park that was already bustling with activities.
Sophia, Eleanor and Elvis glanced around, taking in the lively atmosphere. They spotted the other children that had gone in before them already engaging in different activities.
Some in wheelchairs, others with different assistive devices, all laughing and playing together. It was a heartwarming sight.
Sophia’s eyes widened with awe as she watched a girl in a wheelchair being spun around in circles by her friends, giggling with sheer joy.
Eleanor stood mesmerized by a boy with autism, happily building a colorful tower alongside another child, both communicating through gestures and shared smiles.
Elvis, amazed, observed a group of kids engaging in a game, where one child with visual impairment was guided skillfully by another using verbal cues and gentle touches.
Moved by the scene, Sophia, Eleanor, and Elvis turned to the adults.
With sparkling eyes Sophia asked, "Mom, can we join in?"
Before Candace could respond, Kathleen nodded enthusiastically, her heart swelling with pride. "Of course! go ahead and explore."
The children sped off with excitement, and without hesitation, joined in the activities.
Sophia and Eleanor befriended a beautiful visually impaired girl about their age while Elvis engaged in a game of adapted basketball with a group of boys.
The whole park was filled with joy and happiness as no one was left out.
At some point, Stanley, Candace’s husband, handed out colorful paints and brushes, encouraging everyone to create art together.
Then Jason started a game of tag that included all abilities, and the rules were modified to ensure that everyone could participate.
At the same time, Elvis began strumming his guitar, creating a rhythm that resonated with the group’s laughter and joy.
The boundaries between abilities faded away as the children reveled in the joy of playing and creating together.
The ladies stood back and watched with admiration as the children seamlessly integrated, laughing and bonding with their new friends, not bothered about their physical condition.
They shared in the contagious laughter, heartened by the sheer beauty of witnessing the pure friendship among these incredible children.
Kathleen noticed Sophia and Eleanor each holding hands with their new friends, sharing giggles and exchanging stories.
Meanwhile, Elvis passed the ball to another boy in a wheelchair, the sheer delight on both their faces palpable.
A volunteer approached Kathleen, Candace and Lauren, a warm smile on her face. "Your kids are wonderful. They’re fitting in so well, aren’t they?"
Kathleen beamed with pride, her eyes glistening with emotion.
"Thank you. I must say, they surprised me today with their kindness and openness. This place is magical for them."
The volunteer nodded in agreement, touched by the scene unfolding before them.
Lauren wiped off a lone tear from her eyes. "It’s heartwarming to witness such genuine connections. They’re teaching us adults something special today."
Candace nodded, her heart full, as she continued to watch their children and the other kids reveling in the joy of acceptance and togetherness.
"In this space, differences fade into the background, and the simple pleasure of being together prevails."
For every child present at the event, the day was filled with moments of shared joy, acceptance, and it was almost hard trying to get them to stop as evening approached.
It was almost getting dark when they finally called it a day.
Needless to say, on their way home, the car was filled with excited chatter as the day’s events were replayed one after the other.
They had taken the limousine so there was room enough for Kathleen and her family and friends to ride in one car.
"What an awesome day. I’ve never been this relaxed and fulfilled in a very long while, I’m so happy I came."
"Really?" Kathleen rolled her eyes. "To think that I practically dragged you down here."
"But it was still because I agreed to be dragged," Cheryl retorted.
"Mom, when can we come back again."
"Don’t you think it is too soon to pop that question, my dear Miss Universe?" Jason quickly exclaimed.
What was wrong with this girl? Although he didn’t regret coming, the last thing he needed any time soon was a repeat of today’s event. He knew what he had to sacrifice to be here.
Kathleen stifled a giggle. "Don’t worry brother, I’m not a slave driver."
Turning to Eleanor, she said, "We will come back again sweetheart, but that will be when it is convenient for everyone. Moreover you and the other kids still have school work to finish."
"Ok mom," Eleanor reluctantly agreed.
Talking about finishing something, Elvis was reminded of their assignment. They have to finish checking on that man.
The only information he had gotten so far was the man’s name.
He was about to find out more about President Shawn Hudson last night when his uncle arrived from the airport so everything had to be suspended.
Seeing the quiet little guy by her side, Cheryl couldn’t help but poke his sides. "What’s up little man? You are not saying anything."
He raised his head and the cold look in his eyes startled Cheryl. For a moment she thought the person staring at her was none other than President Hudson.
’How can a small boy be this formidable?’
Jason burst out in laughter. He was the only one who saw what just transpired between Cheryl and his little nephew. He didn’t need to say anything, but succeeded in shutting up his glib tongued girlfriend effortlessly.
"What is so funny?" Cheryl could only transfer everything on to Jason since she couldn’t do anything to Elvis who had returned back to his shell again.
