Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 266: A Familiar Face
As the man lifted his hood, Kazuichi stood frozen as disbelief washed over him. The battle-hardened warrior who had been hacking through waves of mindless Hybrids was suddenly stripped of his composure, and faced with a ghost from his past. For a moment, the battlefield faded into the background. The ground still rumbled with the distant roar of the elements, but Kazuichi’s entire world narrowed to the man standing before him.
The man’s face, now fully exposed, sent a chill down Kazuichi’s spine. Recognition flickered in his mind, though he couldn’t quite place it. Something about those eyes, the cruel twist of his lips, gnawed at the edges of Kazuichi’s memory. Where had he seen him before? 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Seconds stretched into what felt like hours as Kazuichi’s mind raced. His heart pounded violently in his chest, the adrenaline of the fight still coursing through his veins. Then, like a sudden crack of lightning, it hit him.
The orphanage.
Before Kazuichi had been adopted, before he had found a real family, he had lived in that cold, lonely place. The kids there were kind enough, but school... school had been a different story. There was one bully, older by several grades, who had taken a particular interest in tormenting him. This man, standing before him now, had been that bully.
Kazuichi’s blood ran cold as the memories flooded back. The name of that bully might have escaped him, but the pain, the humiliation—it had never faded. All the times he had been cornered, beaten, and laughed at by that older boy came rushing back with brutal clarity.
"Remember me, Kazuichi?" the man’s voice cut through the silence, dripping with mockery. His smile widened, and there was no mistaking the malicious glee in his expression. "You’ve come a long way since those days, haven’t you?"
Kazuichi clenched his fists, the knuckles of his hands turning white around the hilt of his twin daggers. His jaw tightened, the familiar rage bubbling to the surface, but he forced himself to remain silent. He wasn’t the weak, defenseless kid from the orphanage anymore. This time, he would be the one standing tall.
The man took a step forward, his voice dropping to a low, conspiratorial tone. "I’ve been watching you, Kazuichi. You and all the other Hybrids. Watching how you’ve become the very thing you all hate. It’s pathetic, really." He sneered, his eyes gleaming with twisted satisfaction. "But you see, I have a plan. A way to cleanse this entire world of the filth you Hybrids have spread."
Kazuichi’s eyes narrowed, the words cutting through him like knives. What was this madman talking about? "Cleanse the world?" Kazuichi growled, taking a threatening step forward. "With what, an army of mindless zombies? You think that’s going to solve anything?"
The man chuckled darkly, his confidence unshaken. "You still don’t understand, do you?" He spread his arms wide, as if inviting Kazuichi to take in the devastation around them. "The Hybrids are the root of everything wrong in this world. It’s you and your kind who brought this chaos, this destruction. But I... I’ve found a way to fix it."
His gaze hardened, and his voice dropped to a venomous whisper. "I will use the mindless Hybrids. Control them. Fight fire with fire. Once I’ve rid the world of the Hybrids, I will cleanse the land of every last zombie, Aberrant, and Omega alike. And then..." His smile returned, colder than ever. "Then there will be peace."
Kazuichi’s grip tightened around his daggers, his body tensing. He could feel the rage building within him, threatening to spill over. "You’re insane," he spat, his voice trembling with barely contained fury. "You think using zombies to wipe out the Hybrids will bring peace? You’re no better than the monsters you’re trying to destroy."
The man’s smile didn’t falter. If anything, it grew wider, more sinister. "I don’t expect you to understand, Kazuichi. You never were the brightest. But soon, very soon, you’ll see the truth."
Kazuichi had heard enough. With a roar of fury, he lunged forward, his daggers flashing in the dim light as he prepared to strike down the man who had brought so much pain into his life. But before he could land the blow, the man’s figure blurred, moving with inhuman speed. In an instant, he had leapt backward, out of Kazuichi’s reach.
Kazuichi skidded to a halt, his eyes scanning the battlefield for his target. But the man was gone, his mocking laughter echoing through the air.
"Not so fast, Kazuichi," the voice taunted from the shadows. "You think you’re ready to face me? I don’t think so. But don’t worry... I have something special planned for you."
Kazuichi’s heart sank as he felt the ground tremble beneath him. The air around him grew thick with an oppressive energy, and he knew—something was coming. Something big.
Before he could react, the ground beneath him split open, and from the depths of the earth rose a towering figure—a creature unlike any he had faced before. Standing well over ten feet tall, its hulking body was covered in thick, rotting flesh, its massive arms ending in jagged claws. Its eyes glowed with a sickly yellow light, and its gaping maw let out a deafening roar that shook the very earth.
It was the Gigantic Omega Zombie, the most powerful and feared of all the undead abominations. But that wasn’t all. Behind it, dozens—no, hundreds—of lesser zombies began to pour out of the ground, their grotesque forms shambling toward Kazuichi with mindless hunger.
Kazuichi’s breath hitched in his throat. This wasn’t just any fight. This was a massacre waiting to happen.
And at the head of the monstrous horde stood the man from his past, his arms crossed and a twisted grin on his face. "I hope you’re ready, Kazuichi," he called out mockingly. "Because this is where it all ends."
The Gigantic Omega Zombie let out another thunderous roar, and Kazuichi felt the weight of the situation crash down on him. His body screamed at him to run, to escape, but his mind refused to back down. He couldn’t retreat now—not after everything he’d been through. Not after seeing the face of the man who had tormented him as a child.
With a steely resolve, Kazuichi tightened his grip on his daggers. His muscles burned with the residual power of the meteorite ore, but he couldn’t afford to waste any of it. This would be his toughest battle yet, and he had to make every second count.
Gritting his teeth, Kazuichi raised his blades, his eyes locked on the Gigantic Omega Zombie. He had faced impossible odds before. He had fought his way through wave after wave of Hybrids and zombies alike. This would be no different.
But as the towering beast took its first earth-shaking step toward him, Kazuichi couldn’t help but feel the crushing weight of doubt creeping in. Could he really win this fight? Could he defeat the man who had haunted him for so long, and his unstoppable army of the undead?
The ground trembled again as the Omega Zombie roared, its massive body lumbering forward with deadly intent. Kazuichi steeled himself, his heart pounding in his chest.
He had no choice. This fight was inevitable.
And it was only just beginning.
