Chapter 248: Mindless Hybrids?

Through the twisted, overgrown forest, the group pressed forward, their minds still reeling from the sudden appearance of the mindless Hybrids. Each step forward carried a weight of caution, as if the wilderness itself was testing their resolve. Despite the recent victory, a strange unease gnawed at Kazuichi. Those Hounds and Mercs—they hadn’t acted like normal Hybrids. Their movements were erratic, almost mindless, as if something had stripped them of their reasoning.

Though the forest began to thin as they descended the mountain, Kazuichi couldn’t shake the image of the blank-eyed creatures that had attacked them. He glanced at Lea, who was walking ahead, her gaze unwavering. Maybe it was nothing. Maybe he was just overthinking it. After all, there had been countless reports of Hybrids turning into mindless zombies after failing to control their transformations. The mutation process was risky for everyone involved, but for Hybrids, it was especially brutal.

Still, Kazuichi couldn’t help but feel that there was something more to it. The Mercs and Hounds they had encountered seemed different from any he had faced before. They were more aggressive, more relentless in their attacks.

Ayaka’s voice broke through his thoughts, drawing his attention. "Are you okay?" she asked, her eyes filled with concern. "You’ve been quiet for a while."

"I’m fine," Kazuichi replied, offering a small smile. "Just thinking."

Ayaka raised an eyebrow but didn’t press further. She knew him well enough to recognize when something was bothering him, but now wasn’t the time for deep conversations. They had a long journey ahead, and lingering on doubts wouldn’t help anyone. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

As the forest began to fade behind them, the group found themselves walking along a dilapidated highway, overgrown with weeds and vines. The asphalt was cracked, broken by the passage of time and the weight of nature reclaiming what had once belonged to the city. Broken street signs leaned at odd angles, their once-bright colors faded into oblivion. The distant sound of wind whistling through the ruins echoed through the silence, a haunting reminder of what the world had once been.

From the edge of the road, Kazuichi could see the outline of the Tokyo skyline—or what remained of it. The towering skyscrapers that had once defined the city’s modern majesty were now little more than crumbling monoliths. Most of the buildings had collapsed, their skeletal remains scattered across the landscape like gravestones marking the city’s demise. The smell of ash and decay lingered in the air, a bitter reminder of the chaos that had consumed this place.

Jurou, ever the optimist, tried to lighten the mood. "So... Tokyo, huh? I always imagined it would be a little more... lively."

"Lively?" Arisu scoffed, shaking her head. "More like crawling with death."

"Lively with zombies, maybe," Lea muttered under her breath, her eyes scanning the horizon for movement.

They continued their trek, weaving between piles of debris and collapsed buildings as they made their way through the outskirts of the ruined metropolis. Every corner they turned revealed new horrors—burnt-out cars, shattered glass, and the remains of those who hadn’t made it out in time. Despite the destruction, there was something hauntingly beautiful about the ruined city, a testament to how life could persist even in the most desolate places. Vines had crept up the sides of buildings, blooming with vibrant flowers that contrasted with the dull gray of concrete and steel. Nature, in all its resilience, had found a way to reclaim the land.

"We’ll make it through quickly," Kazuichi said, trying to keep his voice steady as they moved deeper into the city. "Stay alert. Anything could still be lurking here."

Ayaka nodded, her grip tightening on her weapon. The tension was palpable, each of them well aware that the streets of old Tokyo were notorious for being infested with mindless Hybrids and other creatures drawn to the city’s ruins. Even with their experience, it was impossible to predict what might be waiting for them within the city’s darkened alleys and broken streets.

As they approached the heart of Tokyo, the shadows seemed to grow longer, casting eerie shapes across the abandoned landscape. The wind picked up, carrying with it the faint, metallic scent of blood. Kazuichi’s heart pounded in his chest, his senses on high alert. Something was out there, watching them. He could feel it.

Without warning, a loud crash echoed through the empty streets, the sound of metal scraping against concrete. The group froze, weapons at the ready as they scanned their surroundings. From the shadows emerged a group of Hybrids—Hounds and Mercs, their bodies twisted and malformed, their eyes blank with the unmistakable emptiness of the mindless.

"Of course," Jurou muttered, gripping his axe tighter. "I was hoping we’d avoid a fight in the city."

"No such luck," Kazuichi replied, his gaze narrowing as the Hybrids charged at them.

Lea wasted no time, stepping forward and raising her shield just as the first Hound leaped at her. The creature collided with the shield, its claws scraping against the metal as it snarled and snapped at her. With a grunt of effort, Lea pushed back, sending the Hound sprawling to the ground before Ayaka swiftly moved in to finish it off with a single, precise strike.

Kazuichi unleashed a torrent of water, sending it crashing into the oncoming Mercs with devastating force. The water twisted and spiraled, knocking several of them off their feet and buying the group precious seconds to regroup. But there were too many of them, and they were relentless.

Arisu, ever the sharpshooter, fired off a series of blood bullets from a distance, each one finding its mark with deadly precision. The bullets pierced through the heads of the Hybrids, dropping them one by one, but more kept coming, pouring out from the surrounding ruins like a flood.

"We can’t keep this up forever!" Arisu called out, reloading her ammunition as fast as she could.

Kazuichi knew she was right. They needed to get out of the city before they were overwhelmed. He turned to the others, his mind racing for a plan.

"We push through!" he shouted, his voice cutting through the chaos. "Lea, take point. Jurou, stay close to me. Arisu, cover our backs. Ayaka, pick off any stragglers. We’re going straight for the exit!"

Lea nodded, her expression grim as she raised her shield once more and began charging forward. The rest of the group fell into formation behind her, their movements precise and coordinated as they fought their way through the horde. Kazuichi summoned wave after wave of water, sweeping the Hybrids aside and clearing a path for his team.

They moved as one, their training and experience shining through as they battled their way through the streets. Every step was a struggle, every swing of their weapons a desperate attempt to stay alive. But they didn’t stop. They couldn’t stop.

With each passing moment, the ruins of Tokyo closed in around them, the towering structures casting ominous shadows that seemed to reach out and grab at them. The sounds of battle echoed through the empty streets, the clash of metal and the roars of the Hybrids filling the air. It was a nightmare, a living hell that showed no signs of ending.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, they broke free of the horde, emerging from the ruins and into the open expanse of the wasteland beyond. The city lay behind them, a dark, crumbling monument to the world that once was. But they were alive. They had made it through.

Breathing heavily, Kazuichi glanced back at the ruined city, his heart still pounding in his chest. The mindless Hybrids—they were becoming more frequent, more aggressive. Something was wrong, but he didn’t know what. For now, though, all that mattered was that they were safe. At least, for the moment.

"Let’s keep moving," he said, his voice rough from exertion. "We’re almost home."

The group nodded, exhaustion evident in their faces, but they didn’t complain. Together, they continued their journey, the Kazuichi Stronghold looming on the horizon like a beacon of hope amidst the desolation.

As they approached the gates of their stronghold, a wave of relief washed over them. They had survived yet another trial, and they had made it back home.

For now, they were safe. But the growing presence of the mindless Hybrids lingered in Kazuichi’s mind, a dark shadow that would not be so easily shaken.

In retrospect, mindless Hybrids do exist, and anyone can turn into one. It wasn’t as emphasized but Kazuichi knew that he was in the gray line of life and death when he turned into a Hybrid.

For one, if a Hybrid couldn’t control the virus within the body, they would immediately turn, still retaining their hybrid capabilities but losing their sanity. Another outcome would be, if a Hybrid were to be bitten, causing the virus to run rampant within the body, ultimately turning a Hybrid into a mindless one.

Kazuichi had experienced these before, that’s why he knew how common it was for a Hybrid to turn. Then again, Hybrids have a certain control over their body, and whenever they turn, they don’t dwell with zombies who are of lower rank than them.

That’s why seeing mindless Hybrids so organized ate away at the back of his mind. "No, let’s not think about that too much." Kazuichi muttered to himself as the group pressed forward.

Something was coming, and whatever it was, it would test them like never before.
