Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 247: A Victory
With the weight of their victory lingering in the air, Kazuichi and his group gathered their belongings and prepared for the long trek back to their home stronghold. The morning sun filtered through the dense canopy as they stood at the gates of the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold, saying their goodbyes. It wasn’t easy to leave after everything they’d experienced—the fierce battles, the moments of growth, and the bonds they’d formed with the stronghold’s inhabitants.
Kaito, ever stoic, nodded his head as Kazuichi approached. Despite their brief interactions, there was a mutual respect between the two. Kaito had been a guiding force during the camp, a pillar of strength who had helped them push through the brutal tests they faced.
"Take care of yourself, Kazuichi," Kaito said, his voice firm but laced with the warmth of a parting friend. "Your potential is boundless, but don’t forget the others around you. Strength comes from unity as much as it comes from power."
Kazuichi returned the nod, understanding the weight of Kaito’s words. "I won’t forget," he said, glancing at his team—Lea, Ayaka, Arisu, and Jurou. "We’ll make sure we all keep growing."
They exchanged a firm handshake, and then it was time to move on. Himeno was next to bid them farewell, standing tall despite the battle scars that adorned her from their recent fight. Her gaze softened when she looked at Kazuichi, her usually guarded expression breaking into a rare smile.
"Give Ryota my regards," she said, her voice steady but wistful. It was a reminder of the past, of Yamanashi Stronghold and all they had lost. Yet there was a hint of hope in her words, a belief that the future still held something worth fighting for.
"I will," Kazuichi promised. "Thank you for everything."
Himeno’s smile faded back into her usual composed expression, but her eyes betrayed a hint of emotion. She nodded once before turning away, the unspoken understanding between them settling like a calm wind. With that, their goodbyes were said, and Kazuichi’s group began their journey back to their stronghold.
The path back home was treacherous, a winding trail that cut through dense forest and jagged mountain terrain. Though their mission had been accomplished, the group remained vigilant. Even with the Omega Zombies defeated, the wilderness was still rife with danger. Silent shadows moved in the underbrush, and distant howls echoed in the distance—reminders that the world was far from safe.
Lea, ever cautious, took the lead, her sharp eyes scanning their surroundings for any threats. She had always been the most practical of the group, her instincts honed by years of surviving in this harsh world. Beside her, Ayaka moved with quiet grace, her gaze distant as if lost in thought. Kazuichi walked behind them, flanked by Arisu and Jurou, who trailed slightly behind, exchanging quiet remarks as they traveled.
As they descended the mountain, the terrain shifted from rocky slopes to dense, overgrown woods. Every few steps, branches cracked underfoot, and birds took flight from the treetops. Kazuichi kept his senses sharp, fully aware that at any moment, they could be ambushed by the roaming Hybrids or other unknown dangers lurking in the wilderness.
The air felt thicker here, more oppressive. Sweat dripped down their backs as the sun rose higher in the sky, casting long shadows across the forest floor. Jurou, despite his usual carefree demeanor, kept his hands near his weapons, his eyes flicking to every rustling bush and swaying tree.
"I miss Kaito already," Jurou muttered, breaking the silence with a chuckle that didn’t quite reach his eyes. "At least he made the heavy lifting feel lighter."
Arisu glanced over her shoulder, a small smirk forming on her lips. "You’re just upset because you have to carry your own gear now."
Jurou grinned, but the tension in his shoulders didn’t ease. "Yeah, yeah. But seriously, it’s too quiet, don’t you think?"
Kazuichi frowned, realizing Jurou was right. The forest around them had gone eerily silent, the usual hum of wildlife conspicuously absent. His senses tingled with unease, a knot forming in his gut.
"Stay sharp," Kazuichi said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper. "We’re not alone."
Just as the words left his mouth, a low growl echoed from the depths of the trees. A chill ran down their spines, and in an instant, the group drew their weapons, forming a defensive circle. From the shadows emerged a pack of Hounds—Hybrids bred for speed and lethality, their eyes glowing with predatory hunger.
They moved like lightning, darting between the trees with terrifying speed. Kazuichi’s heart pounded in his chest as he prepared for the inevitable clash. The Hounds didn’t give them any time to think—just as quickly as they had appeared, they lunged at the group, their razor-sharp claws gleaming in the dappled sunlight.
Lea reacted first, her shield coming up just in time to block the first strike. The force of the blow sent her skidding backward, her boots digging into the dirt as she braced herself. Ayaka, swift and silent, countered with a flurry of precise strikes, her blade cutting through the air with deadly precision.
Kazuichi unleashed a torrent of water, his element surging forth from his outstretched hand. The liquid twisted and coiled like a living serpent, wrapping around one of the Hounds and slamming it into a nearby tree with bone-crushing force. Arisu, ever the sharpshooter, fired her hardened blood bullets from a distance, each shot finding its mark as the Hounds closed in on them.
But there were too many. The Hounds moved with unnatural coordination, their speed overwhelming even the most seasoned fighters. Jurou roared as he swung his heavy axe, cleaving through one of the beasts, but another leapt at him from the side, its fangs bared.
Before it could make contact, Kazuichi intervened, sending a pulse of electricity crackling through the air. The bolt struck the Hound mid-leap, its body convulsing as it was thrown backward in a smoking heap.
"They just keep coming!" Arisu shouted, reloading her ammunition with quick, precise movements.
Kazuichi gritted his teeth. They couldn’t afford to be bogged down here, not when they were so close to home. He had to do something drastic, something that would turn the tide in their favor. His thoughts raced as he analyzed the situation, his mind quickly formulating a plan.
"We need to force them back," Kazuichi barked, his voice steady despite the chaos around him. "Lea, form a wall with your shield. Ayaka, support her with quick strikes. Arisu, cover us with long-range fire. Jurou, stay close to me—we’re going to clear a path."
The group moved in sync, their movements honed by the countless battles they had fought together. Lea’s shield slammed into the ground with a resounding thud, forming an impenetrable barrier as Ayaka darted in and out, delivering lethal strikes to any Hound that got too close. Arisu’s bullets rained down from above, each shot perfectly timed to keep the Hounds at bay.
Kazuichi and Jurou moved as one, their combined strength a force to be reckoned with. Kazuichi’s water and lightning clashed with Jurou’s raw power, their attacks combining into a devastating storm of elemental fury. Hounds were blasted aside, their bodies crashing into trees and rocks as the pair carved a path through the pack.
Just when it seemed like they were gaining the upper hand, a new threat emerged from the shadows. A Merc Hybrid, larger and more menacing than the Hounds, stepped into the clearing, its glowing red eyes locking onto Kazuichi with deadly intent. Its hulking form radiated power, and with a snarl, it charged forward, its massive claws tearing through the air.
Kazuichi barely had time to react. He threw up a wall of water in a desperate attempt to slow the Merc’s advance, but it plowed through the barrier as if it were nothing. The force of its attack sent Kazuichi flying backward, crashing into the ground with a grunt of pain.
"Kazuichi!" Jurou shouted, rushing to his side. But before he could reach him, the Merc Hybrid was upon them.
With a roar, the beast raised its claw to strike, but before it could land the blow, Kazuichi’s eyes snapped open. His body crackled with electricity as he summoned every ounce of power he had left. In one swift motion, he unleashed a torrent of water, followed by a blinding bolt of lightning that struck the Merc Hybrid dead-on.
The beast let out a deafening screech as the lightning coursed through its body, its muscles seizing as it collapsed to the ground in a smoking heap. Kazuichi breathed heavily, his chest heaving as the last of his energy drained from him.
The remaining Hounds, sensing their leader’s defeat, scattered into the woods, their howls echoing as they fled.
For a moment, the forest was still once again.
Kazuichi slowly rose to his feet, his body aching from the battle. Jurou clapped him on the shoulder, grinning despite the bruises forming on his skin. "You did it, man," Jurou said, his voice filled with admiration. "That was insane."
Kazuichi smiled wearily. "We all did it."
Lea, Ayaka, and Arisu approached, their faces flushed with the adrenaline of battle, but there was a shared sense of accomplishment between them. They had survived—again.
"We should keep moving," Lea said, ever practical. "There could be more out there."
Kazuichi nodded. "Yeah. Let’s get back to the stronghold."
As they resumed their journey, the group moved with renewed determination. The battle had taken its toll, but it had also strengthened their resolve. Together, they would face whatever challenges came next.
And together, they would survive.
