Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 243: The Final Line Of Defense
The quiet moments after the battle were always strange, like the calm before another inevitable storm. As Kazuichi and the others made their way back to Hybrid Mountain, a tension hung in the air. They had won, or at least they thought they had, but something gnawed at the back of his mind. He had seen the massive Omega Zombie fall, its body collapsing in a heap of destruction. But that unease didn’t fade. He couldn’t shake the sense that this fight wasn’t over.
As they neared the stronghold, the air grew thick with an oppressive heat. Smoke began to curl through the trees, rising into the sky like dark clouds, a warning of something far worse to come. Kazuichi’s heart dropped, his instincts screaming that something had gone wrong. His gaze darted to Ayaka, who met his look with a grim nod. The others felt it too.
Jurou’s voice broke the silence. "That’s not normal. The stronghold’s too far off for there to be smoke like this. Something’s happening."
"Yeah," Kazuichi muttered, eyes narrowing. "We need to hurry."
They quickened their pace, their footsteps growing heavier as the heat intensified. As they broke through the tree line, the stronghold came into view, but it wasn’t the sanctuary they had left behind. Flames danced across the walls, lapping at the buildings and spreading across the ground like wildfire.
"What the hell?" Kazuichi whispered, disbelief flooding his chest.
Out of the inferno, Kaito stumbled toward them, his body covered in soot and sweat. His face was a mask of exhaustion, eyes wide with panic as he approached the group. "It’s not dead," he gasped. "The Omega... it’s back. And it’s stronger. We tried—"
Kaito couldn’t finish the sentence before collapsing in front of them, gasping for air.
"Kaito!" Ayaka crouched down, helping him up as best as she could. "What happened? How did it recover?"
Kaito shook his head, still trying to catch his breath. "I don’t know... we thought it was over. But then... it just got back up, like nothing had happened. Only this time, it’s different. It’s controlling fire now. It’s burning everything."
Kazuichi’s heart sank. Fire? That wasn’t something they had faced before. The Omega Zombie had been bad enough with its sheer size and strength, but now it had elemental power? They weren’t prepared for that.
Arisu clenched her fists, the frustration clear in her eyes. "You mean we beat that thing, and it just... regenerated? And now it’s torching everything?"
"Yeah," Kaito said, his voice a rough whisper. "We tried to hold it off, but we’ve been pushed back. There’s no way we can stop it with what we’ve got left."
Kazuichi exchanged a glance with Ayaka, both of them understanding what needed to be done without saying a word. They had to end this, once and for all.
"Take Kaito to safety," Kazuichi said, standing up and looking toward the smoke-filled horizon. "The rest of us will take care of the Omega Zombie."
Lea frowned. "Are you sure we can handle it? It wasn’t exactly easy the first time, and now it’s—"
"We don’t have a choice," Kazuichi interrupted. "If we don’t stop it, the stronghold’s done. Everyone here will be killed."
Jurou nodded in agreement, his expression hardening. "He’s right. We’ve got to finish this, no matter what."
Ayaka helped Kaito to his feet, handing him off to one of the other survivors who had come rushing from the stronghold. "Get him somewhere safe," she ordered before turning back to Kazuichi. "Let’s move."
They sprinted toward the source of the flames, the air growing hotter with every step. Smoke filled their lungs, and the ground beneath their feet was scorched black. The once-familiar landscape of Hybrid Mountain was now an inferno, reduced to a nightmarish battlefield. But none of them hesitated. The stronghold needed them.
Then they saw it. Rising from the flames, the Omega Zombie stood taller than before, its body crackling with an unnatural energy. Its massive form was wreathed in fire, flames licking up and down its limbs as if it had become one with the element. In its hand, it held a burning boulder, pulsing with heat as it hurled it toward the walls of the stronghold.
"Damn it!" Arisu growled. "How are we supposed to stop that thing now?"
Kazuichi gritted his teeth, eyes locked on the monster. "We’ll find a way."
The Omega Zombie turned its attention toward them, its eyes glowing a fiery red as it let out a deafening roar. Flames burst from its body, spreading outward in a wave of destruction.
"Move!" Kazuichi shouted, diving to the side as the wave of fire scorched the ground where they had just stood. The others scattered, barely avoiding the blast.
Ayaka shot Kazuichi a look, eyes narrowed in determination. "What’s the plan, genius?"
Kazuichi’s mind raced. Water would be the obvious counter to fire, but there was no water source nearby—not enough to douse the inferno this thing was creating. But his powers... his newfound control over water and lightning could make the difference. He just had to find the right moment.
"Jurou, Lea—get in close and keep it distracted. You two can take the hits better than the rest of us," Kazuichi ordered, already formulating a plan. "Ayaka, Arisu—use your speed to hit it from a distance. Don’t let it focus on one of us for too long."
"And you?" Arisu asked, ducking under another fiery blast.
"I’m going to try something new." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Without waiting for a response, Kazuichi summoned his powers, water swirling at his fingertips as he focused on the flames surrounding the Omega Zombie. He couldn’t douse the whole thing, but maybe he didn’t need to. If he could weaken it, reduce the intensity of the fire, then they might stand a chance of breaking through its defenses.
Jurou and Lea charged forward, their massive forms crashing into the Omega Zombie with all the force they could muster. The creature roared, swinging its burning arms at them, but their Bulwark abilities held strong, absorbing the brunt of the attacks.
Ayaka darted in and out of the fray, her fists glowing as she delivered a flurry of rapid strikes to the creature’s legs. Arisu, with her Project Blood Art activated, elongated her limbs and lashed out at the Omega Zombie from a distance, her speed keeping her out of harm’s way.
Kazuichi moved to the side, positioning himself out of the creature’s direct line of sight. The water around his hands intensified, forming into thick streams that he directed toward the Omega Zombie’s fiery form. The flames hissed as the water made contact, steam rising into the air.
It wasn’t enough to extinguish the fire, but the flames began to weaken, flickering as the water sapped their energy. Kazuichi’s heart pounded in his chest—he was running out of time. He needed more water, needed to gather enough to completely douse the creature.
Jurou and Lea continued to hold the line, but they were slowing down, their bodies covered in burns from the constant barrage of fire. Ayaka and Arisu were struggling to keep up the pace, the heat from the Omega Zombie making it harder to get close without being overwhelmed.
Kazuichi clenched his fists, lightning crackling at his fingertips. "Alright... I guess it’s time to see how far I can push this."
He raised his hands, summoning both water and electricity at once. The two elements swirled together, forming a volatile storm of energy around him. The lightning arced through the water, creating a deadly combination of power that could both douse the flames and deliver a devastating shock.
With a deep breath, Kazuichi launched the attack, sending the storm of water and lightning crashing toward the Omega Zombie.
The electricity surged through the creature, and for the first time, it let out a true roar of pain. The fire around its body flickered and sputtered, the flames dying down as the water doused them. The Omega Zombie staggered, its massive form swaying as the combination of attacks took its toll.
Kazuichi didn’t let up, pressing forward with everything he had. The storm raged, lightning crackling through the air as water surged over the Omega Zombie’s form.
But just as victory seemed within reach, the creature roared once more, its eyes flaring with fiery rage as it summoned one last surge of power. Flames burst from its body, stronger than before, and Kazuichi’s storm was pushed back, the fire roaring to life once more.
"Damn it!" Kazuichi growled, frustration tightening his chest. "It’s not enough!"
But he didn’t back down. He couldn’t. The stronghold, his friends—everything depended on them defeating this monster. Right behind them was the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold. While the other side provided shelter for the Hybrids, on the other side of the mountain stood the settlement for the uninfected.
If they back down now, it was only a matter of time before the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold falls altogether.
"We need more power!" Kazuichi screamed his lungs out.
