Chapter 193: A World Without ’The One Piece’

{2 years and 3 months after Leviathan’s Invasion...

Roronora City Hospital}

No longer in her PoV, Isfet is sitting up in her hospital bed. Over her left eye socket is an eyepatch, her new Eyelien focused on the food tray above her lap, stone faced.

On the desk-like hospital tray, there is a full bowl of soup with crackers and a spoon. Next to that is a single sheet of paper and a pen.

Isfet Narr.: *I was given food and paperwork to fill out while I ate...however...*

She doesn’t reach for the spoon nor the pen. Her head turns to the small desk where the Don had placed a blunt and a lighter.

The nurse with orange eyes and a matching collar, tending to the new eye user, walks back in.

Nurse: "How’s everything?"

The care taker sees the full bowl of chicken noodle soup, a blank citizen form, and the untouched utensils.

Nurse: "Is... everything alright, Deary? Do you feel sick? Are you hurt anywhere?"

Isfet looks back to the items in front of her, she talks without looking at the woman in the doorway, keeping her stare on the layout.

Isfet: "I-I don’t know how to read non-Braille text or how to write..."

The surprised nurse makes her way over.

Nurse: "Wait, you weren’t-"

Isfet: "I was born legally blind and without my left eye.

I need to leave here."

The one eyed, stern woman finally looks up and at the collared nurse with two human eyes, as she walks over.

Pulling a gel pen out of the chest pocket, stitched to her clean light blue scrubs, the warm smiling nurse grabs the clipboard with the citizenship paperwork attached and sits in the single chair next to the patient.

Nurse: "I promise, you can leave once we get this done. I don’t think they’d let you have a place of residence if you don’t have this.

Don’t worry, you can trust me."

Without any sort of response, or facial expression, Isfet keeps a side eye on the friendly woman.

Isfet Narr.: *She was kind, and there was no reason for me not to, but I didn’t trust a word that was said by anyone other than Edom or Esau.*

Nurse: "Okay, first, what’s your name, Hun?

Just a first name will do.

I’m Joyce by the way."

Isfet Narr.: *Even though I have no recollection of my parents, Edom would always tell me about them.

Especially of my mother...

Our mother...her name was...*

Isfet: "Hathor.

M-my name is H-Hathor."

Nurse: "What a beautiful name."

The gleeful nurse jots down the false name and then looks confused.

Nurse: "Hmmm, usually Eyelien users also have a left human eye, so we also document that eye color, but..."

She looks up at the eyepatch covering Isfet’s left eye socket.

Nurse: "... I’ll just put ’not applicable’ for now...

How old are you?"

...

...

...

{90 Minutes Later, Outside the Roronora City Hospital.}

Isfet Narr.: *After she helped me fill out that paperwork, I was willfully, and pleasantly escorted out by Nurse Joyce.*

The motion sensor glass doors slide open, and Isfet walks out of the large hospital with the helpful nurse.

The new citizen is wearing skinny jeans with a pink and red stripped top. Her bright red hair is down, barely covering the majority of the bright pink underlayer of her naturally two colored hair.

Isfet looks at the sky for the first time with her new eyesight.

Like everyone else, she sees the SeiõrSnow as it calmly falls, but today, in combination with a soft rain and dark clouds above.

Behind her, Nurse Joyce is admiring the outfit with a wide blushing smile. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

Nurse Joyce: "Oh. My. Gosh!

You look so cute!

You’re lucky we’re the same sizes Hathor, haha!"

Isfet looks down at the wardrobe she was given in consideration.

Isfet: "Are you sure I can have the-?"

Nurse Joyce: "Ohh, don’t mention it, Hun! I live here, so I have an entire closet left, hehee."

The curious Isfet finally raises an eyebrow to the reveal.

Isfet: "You...live here?"

An angry female ’Master’ and a sad female ’pet’ on a leash, exit the hospital, making the two take their conversation to the side.

Nurse Joyce: "Mhm, those aliens terrify me, so I’m never going to be considered a citizen..."

As they walk out from the entrance canopy, she looks up at the mysterious SeiõrSnow falling with the beautiful morning sun shining, completely contrast to what Isfet is seeing.

Nurse Joyce: "...but the head doctor who runs this hospital has one of those alien eyes.

When someone medically useful comes to the city, Dr. Maurice takes them in.

With the high necessity for his rare knowledge and proven skills, Don Laban gives him pardon to take whichever of us ’pets’ he needs to continue a functional medical facility."

Isfet looks up at the same sky, SeiõrSnow falling, but no sunshine. Just the depressing clouds, and the imaginative rain.

Reaching into her pocket, she pulls out the blunt and lighter, examining it.

Isfet: "The Don, that’s the woman who charged in my room, and left this...right?"

The smiling nurse immediately twists to a frown, her face sour in anger. She looks down at the concrete in front of her.

Remembering how the Don was puffing on her own, Isfet puts one end of the rerolled cigarillo in between her lips and flicks the lighter flame. It ignites the cherry and without coughing, the new smoker exhales a grey breathe.

Realizing it has been a moment without an answer, she turns to see how much her question has affected her new "friend".

As if it causes her pain to talk, the nurse grunts out a response.

Nurse Joyce: "She’s...a great leader..."

Isfet Narr.: *I could tell something was wrong, but didn’t press her any further. I figured, I would learn more soon enough.

But the only thing that mattered now, was...*

Isfet:*inhales* "Which way is that pet shelter?*exhales*"

Caught off guard by the question, the nurse takes a surprised step back.

Nurse Joy: "Y-you’re not thinking of buying someone right? Do you have family there?

Please tell me that’s why-..."

Isfet Narr.: *In retrospect, after the kindness Nurse Joyce had displayed to me, the way I had acted in response was unexcusably cold.

Why didn’t I tell her I had to save my sister and Esau?

Why didn’t I thank her for the gratitude she so willfully offered?

Was it because I gained a new independence, and my own focused goal was all that mattered?

Now that I’m alone in this world... without Edom, to be me, with sight and my own personality... am I really just an asshole?*

With the blunt still in her lips, Isfet continues to walk away without a word.

The innocuous nurse stays where she is, with a brokenhearted look and tears.

She watches as the free citizen walks away, without even a thank you.

As Isfet crosses the street, she sees a male Eyelien user with a woman and a teenage girl on leashes.

Isfet Narr.: *My naivety led me to believe this was a man who also bought his family’s safety, on the other hand...*

Isfet: "Excuse me, where’s the pet shelter?"

The man gives a gross snicker and examines the one eyed woman smoking her blunt, who approached him from the hospital.

Man: "Heh, what, just got one of these eyes, huh? Looking to take advantage of this city’s awesome laws too?"

He looks at the scared woman and young teenage girl on their leash, pulling them slightly closer to their master.

Man: "Before this apocalypse, I would’ve never had the opportunities to fullfil all those internet fantasies I had, hahaha!

But now...

...

Hey, these two here are sisters, ain’t that fuckin sexy?"

Isfet’s resting scowl, combined with her immediate appearance, intimidates the two whimpering sibling victims as she looks down on them. She looks back at the ’Master’ without any change in her resting bitch face expression, ignoring the disgusting injustice in her presence.

Isfet: "Where did you get them?"

Isfet Narr.: *He pointed me in the proper direction and I left those two misfortunate ’pets’ to continue living under the command of that dispicable man.

Those two were sisters, with the same age gap as Edom and I...so why don’t I care?

Why is finding Edom more important than me saving those girls?

Excluding Nurse Joyce and my unrealized selfishness towards her, within the first 3 hours of having usable vision, my latest introduction to the world was more than disappointing.

This new world I was finally looking at, without my sister, was just a different dark and cloudy world than how I previously saw it."

Isfet walks alone down the early morning sidewalk. She looks at the SeiõrSnow and rain falling as she turns the 2nd to last corner before reaching the "Pet Shelter".

A small strip of shops before the apocalypse, but now the enclosed area has barbwire fence and there are two men with rifles guarding the front gate.

There are a few humans, all without Eyeliens, standing at the fence in hopes to be taken by a citizen passing by.

Women who are still considered as pets are making suggestive gestures towards male citizens walking by, attempting to seduce their way towards freedom.

A block away from the shelter, as a newly purchased couple passes the wandering Isfet in the opposite direction.

With her highly sensitive hearing, she picks up the woman talking to her new "master".

Woman Citizen: "Oh, it’s such a beautiful morning, Master Joey.

Ain’t it amazing how this beautiful snow falls without a cloud in the sky?

So, what are we gonna do first?

Or...where are we gunna do it first, teehee."

Isfet Narr.: *I didn’t understand the significance of what she was talking about and what my brain was processing from the information my new sensor was detecting. I was solely focused on saving my sister and Esau.

I just wish the world didn’t twist it’s knife in my side anymore than it had already...*

With half her blunt left, still smoking, Isfet is about to turn the corner to see her goal, but from across the street, someone shouts at her.

Don Laban: "Ayooo, Hathor!

How’s dat bud?!

Shit’s fire, right?!"

The voice makes Isfet freeze, she slowly turns her head, and accidentally EyeEngages with the approaching DaeMon. The melancholic Zoram, not far behind, crosses the street.

Laban’s Eyelien is still kept continuously popped off, her steady grey aura always "wanting the smoke".

Isfet Narr.: *Ever since that morning, every small choice leading up to that moment, unknown to me, was necessary in order to get away with everything else proceeding.

It was also what tormented me inside, the entire time I was trying to get closer to Laban."

Isfet’s only available eye looks down at the freshly filled out citizenship paper, folded, and hanging out her jean pocket, next to her hand holding what’s left of her gifted blunt.

Isfet: "My name...

H-How do you-?"

Don Laban : "Don’t chu worry about dat.

Just remembah one thing...

I always find out whatevah I wanna know..."

Don Laban breaks the EyeEngagement as she wraps her arm around the free woman and whispers in Isfet’s black diamond studded ear.

Don Laban(whisper): "But sometimes, just for the shits n’ gigs, I like to play along, ’Isfet’..."

Isfet swallows her spit but keeps her stone face expression, even when the Don immediately exposed her real name.

Her rock solid composure visibly impresses Laban and the cocky Daemon chuckles with a large dimpled smile.

With her arm still around Isfet, the DaeMon turns the both of them around, away from the Pet Shelter and the sluggish Zoram keeps her usual distance from behind.

Don Laban: "Anyway, whatchu tryin to get into today, ’Hath’?

It’s a bright and gorgeous day today, dah perfect setting for someone gaining their well earned freedom, like yourself."

Isfet tilts her head up and with the help of her symbiote, the once defective sensor to the organic computer, can only process a depressing, gloomy, and dark clouded sky.

In a world, without the one piece she had when she was visually impaired, all the orphaned little sister sees, are sad stormy clouds.

No smiling sunshines.

Don Laban: "And aye, don’t worry about anyone fuckin wid you here, ’Hath’.

Knowing how you got that Eyelien, makes you a certified ’Homie’ in my book.

I’ll even act like a ’big sister’ to ya.

Shii, if things with me and Zoram don’t work out, I wouldn’t mind your cute and tough face hanging around me a bit more too, hehe."
