Chapter 22: I Promise

Morning arrived quickly, Jacob sat on the edge of his bed, his mind still fixated on the conversation with the Regulator the previous night.

The morning sun poured into his room completely, bathing him wth it’s light, and making his skin glow with a golden hue.

’I have to talk to the family today.’

He thought as he got up and walked to the washroom, he stared at his reflection in the mirror for a brief moment before moving on. It caused him to feel immense joy.

It was the same routine each morning, the moment he got out of the shower, his breakfast was already waiting for him, so he hurriedly ate his food and stared out of the window again, downloading all the sword skills he witnessed on the courtyard.

"I have come to clear your tray, young master, I hope it was all to your satisfaction?" Xenia spoke lightly as she gracefully carried the tray off the side table and walked to the door.

"Surely Xenia, thank you very much, but I need you to do something for me."

"What is it?" She asked.

"I need you to inform the family to meet me in the dining room by noon, I have something I want to tell them."

"It will be done right away, young master." She responded and disappeared down the hallway.

Jacob turned back to his window, his sixteenth birthday was fast approaching, his family will certainly think it odd that he would want to leave now, but he had to.

He looked over at Karron, the great silver-winged beast soared through the sky with reckless abandon, that was its domain. Rhoarin would make sure she got at least four hours of flight everyday, so she can live the way dragons should. It reminded Jacob of how a dog needed to be walked everyday so as to maintain physical health and behavioral stability.

’It would be cool to have my own dragon someday.’ He mused inwardly.

_ _ _

"What?!"

"There is no way I’m letting you do that boy!"

"Where would you even go?!"

There was a chorus of disapproval on the round dinner table as Jacob made his intentions known, they all looked at him like he was out of his mind.

"I’ve made my decision, I’ve been here sixteen years, I deserve to go out and explore the world." Jacob said confidently.

"The world is dangerous, my son, it is not something you just explore," his father, Rhoarin replied, a worried expression plastered on his face.

"I understand your youthful exorbitance, Jacob, your need for adventure, but you are too young." Esty added.

"I’m strong enough, trust me, I can handle whatever is thrown my way, as you all know."

They all looked at him in confusion, it was clear that the boy was gonna do what he wanted, regardless of what they thought, and caging him in the castle would be useless.

Elena, who hadn’t said a word the whole time, looked at Jacob for a moment too long and finally said, "At least wait until after your sixteenth birthday my son, that way we have another good memory to hold on to."

"Mother—"

"Your mother is right boy, we can all see the determination in your eyes, you definitely remind me of my younger self, so we would let you go, only after your sixteenth, and that is final." The Patriarch, Alaric finalized.

Jacob sunk into his chair, it was an acceptable proposal, but he hoped that no sort of danger would befall them until then.

Alaric was the first to leave, then Esty, Rhoarin walked slowly beside Jacob, patted his shoulder and then followed right behind.

Elena remained in her seat, still staring at Jacob, who was starting to wonder what he did wrong.

"What’s wrong mom?" He asked innocently, moving into a chair closer to her.

"I’m just worried about you, that’s all. You were found out on the courtyard at midnight, and now you are talking about leaving the castle. What is actually going on with you Jacob?"

"..." Jacob remained silent, he couldn’t afford to lie to his mother any longer, and now she was worried, he didn’t much like the look on her face. He hung his head in thought.

’Well?" She asked, stretching forth a hand to raise his head.

"If I told you, you would not believe me."

"Try me," she insisted.

Jacob began telling her everything, from his reincarnation, to his awakening, to the second awakening, the Regulator.

He made sure to leave no stone unturned, he told her about Savant’s grudge, how he sent demons to attack him the previous night. How those demons were now part of his shadow army.

The look on her face changed multiple times as Jacob told her his story, at one point he could swear he saw a tear run down her cheek, that made him uncomfortable.

"So—you’re basically a god." She finally spoke up.

Jacob laughed, "no mother, I’m not a god, I’m Jacob, your son."

"A human should not have all these powers you just told me about." She wanted to scream but her words came out as whispers.

"Well I asked for all cheat abilities and my wish was granted, there’s not much else I can say."

"And Savant, that slimy goblin, I should pluck his eyes out and feed them to the—"

"I’ll take care of Savant mother, don’t worry, if he even tries to come near any one of you, he will live to regret it." Jacob assured her.

"Oh, I nearly forgot." He continued, "Manifest!"

Two shadowy structures materialized out of the ground and crouched on one knee, one of them had golden hair and the other, silver.

Elena almost jumped out of her seat after witnessing the scene that unfolded before her. "Jacob! You startled me!"

"I’m sorry mother, these are Jirin and Jaran, the demons I defeated yesterday."

She stared at them as though she was studying them, "I have only met one necromancer in my life, but it was nothing like this."

"Well I will leave Jaran here in the castle for protection incase anything happens, he will place a barrier spell on the castle to prevent unassuming eyes. Since Jirin is more skilled in combat, I’ll be taking him with me."

"At your service, Master." Both shadows said in unison, causing Elena to flinch again.

"This is gonna take some getting used to," she said with a chuckle.

Jacob looked at his mother seriously now, he placed his hand on hers, "Mother, promise me you’ll keep my secret, don’t tell dad, or grandma, I suspect grandpa has his theories already, but don’t tell anyone, please."

She gave the boy a long look, after seeing that he was serious about his request, she agreed. "I promise."

Jacob let out a sigh of relief, "Thank you."

"Will you be taking Xenia with you?" Elena asked.

Jacob was surprised at the question, he hadn’t given it any thought at all, it would be nice to have companionship outside Jirin on his journey, but it also would mean he would have to constantly worry about her.

He pondered for a while and then asked, "should I take her along with me."

"Definitely, it would do you a world of good." His mother replied.
