Pursuit Of Immortality: Conquering Ten Thousand Goddesses
Chapter 23: The Inner Court Disciples
Three men and one woman, along with a young man with stubble of beard and ruffian clothes, a stark contrast to the neatly adorned disciples of the Peach Blossom Sect, stood in front of Chang’e’s house.
The first person to notice them was Xia Xia, who was coming out to retrieve the seeds her mother had dried earlier. She was smiling and humming, but froze the moment she noticed the men.
The one in front immediately cupped his hands together. He had long black hair and dashing, calm eyes.
"Young lady, I ask after the owner of this house."
Xia Xia’s eyes danced with starry lights. For a moment, she seemed lost, only blinking a few moments later to remember what the man had said.
She quickly stepped forward with prideful strides.
"Here she is. I am the owner of this house. State your business."
The disciple smiled at the little girl, patting her head with smiling eyes.
"Young lady, I’m speaking about your father or mother."
Xia Xia’s heart fluttered as the man touched her with his graceful smile. She could almost feel her heart thunder and was worried that the man might have heard it too.
Alas, while all of this was going on, Xiao Fa also stepped out, having heard some voices. Immediately, her eyes fell on the color of the robes and her posture stiffened. Her cheeks reddened as she saw the men, but she cupped her hands and bowed to them quickly.
"Esteemed Disciples of the Peach Blossom Sect, to what do we owe this magnified presence?"
Xia Xia stared at her sister with apparent disgust.
Xiao Fa sounded so gentle, with no shred of rudeness in her tone. This was not the usual Xiao Fa that she knew. And Xia Xia understood why her sister had suddenly become a chameleon upon seeing these men.
’If you like, lick their boots all you want. You don’t have the talent to be among them!’
She might not have said the words, but the look she gave her sister more than did the job.
"I’m Hei Jun. We seek the owner of this house. Can we be let in?"
The calm disciple said with a relaxed tone, offering Xiao Fa a harmless smile.
Xiao Fa quickly opened the door and allowed them in, pushing her sister aside like she was a chicken in the way.
Xia Xia stared, dazed at her sister who was suddenly full of mannerisms.
"Esteemed guests, please take a seat. I shall call my mother."
She pointed them to the bench in the yard, but Hei Jun glanced down at it, hiding the disgust in his eyes before setting that calm smile on Xiao Fa.
"It is dishonorable to make ourselves comfortable in a stranger’s house. These are the teachings of the Great Peach Blossom Sword Sect."
Xiao Fa’s eyes glittered powerfully as she heard the words, her lashes fluttering.
"What other teachings of the Great Peach Blossom Sword Sect do you have to share?!"
Hei Jun’s eyes coldly settled on Xiao Fa.
Immediately, she felt a chill run down her spine.
"Haha, perhaps I shall go fetch my mother first."
Before she stepped inside though, Chang’e was coming out, and so was a gorgeous man behind her.
The woman amongst them looked stunned, and the other two men behind Hei Jun suppressed their surprise. One often could not come by such a stunning face outside a prestigious sect.
Questions such as the sect he was affiliated with, or who exactly he was, were already troubling their minds. Even Hei Jun, whose face was of golden brilliance, paled in comparison to this man, becoming only a mundane handsome man.
Hiding his reaction, he respectfully bowed to both of them.
’That must be the mother, and this man... he’s too young to father these ladies, so... he would be that person.’
Before being asked to approach this house by the patriarch, he had heard certain rumors from the female disciples about a man downtown who could heal and bring relief with needles.
Some disciples had even been deliberating about coming to him. But of course, this would cause the sect to lose face. So even though they were merely outer court disciples, they couldn’t afford to act rashly — not thinking about the reputation of the sect.
After being given this mission to aid the Gambling Den by the sect leader, he had heard even more rumors about this Benevolent Leader. Even finding out that he stayed in the same place where he was to collect the Gambling Den’s debt.
He put on a fake smile.
"Lady, young man, I greet you both. I have come on behalf of the gambling den that submitted a petition to the sect about a debt you have refused to pay."
Shi Lan slowly stepped forward, deeply irritated by this situation. He might not know a lot about the Peach Blossom Sect, but back in his days, sects were organizations that were the most fearsome of organizations; they couldn’t be trifled with.
It greatly disgusted him that such a body had been reduced to a debt collector.
He clenched his fist and pointed to Hei Jun’s face.
"You... where is your pride?"
Hei Jun glanced at the man, confused.
Wei Shi Lan’s voice thundered.
"A Great Sect, coming to collect debt for a gambling den? How shameless have you people become? Do you know what the meaning of a Sect is?!"
"The pillars of the realm, the forces of power, the definers of the cultivation world..." he looked at them with deep distaste. "You have come to collect debts?"
The disciples behind Hei Jun grasped the swords on their waists with dark looks.
But it did not faze Shi Lan one bit.
Hei Jun glanced back and spoke to them with his eyes, causing them to return their swords and stand upright. Then he turned to the young man and forced a smile.
"Like I said, this is a petition. There’s nothing wrong with a Sect doing volunteer work for society."
Shi Lan scoffed. He brought out a small bag of copper coins and threw it on the ground. The copper coins spilled all over. Then he lifted his shin and gave Hei Jun a condescending look.
"Volunteer work for society? Alright then. Those are your money... bend down and pick them."
Everybody stared in shock, both outside the fence and even Xia Xia, Chang’e, and Xiao Fa. None of them could say a word because Shi Lan looked angry in a way they had never seen.
Equally, the calmness on Hei Jun’s face vanished.
