Chapter 353: Alone In Thoughts (Ch.353)

"It will be dawn in a short time now, Decaron will require his final instructions. " Cassian broke the silence after a short time.

"Hmmm." Jian hummed in response but made no attempt to get up to his feet from where he sat at the edge of the hill.

Jian’s eyes were also closed in meditation and Cassian could tell Jian had no intentions to return to the camp or see Decaron off himself.

Ever since the report of Fort Blazed had arrived, Jian had been in a dark mood, far worse than his wrath at the elusive troll golem.

Cassian understood that all that happened beyond their control were considered by Jian to be his own failures as King.

Neither Cassian nor anyone who knew Jian would conform to this train of thoughts, Jian was the most capable ruler the stronghold had known.

And it was precisely because of the depth of his love for his people and these lands his father had conquered, it was perhaps the only thing that could move Jian’s heart.

As much as it ached Cassian’s heart to watch Jian beat himself up over things that were beyond his control, this was just how Jian had always been.

Cassian also did not have the heart to provide comfort knowing the only comfort Jian would welcome was knowing his people were safe.

"Decaron will take the treasure away, do you really want it sent there...?" Cassian asked.

Jian gave no response and just when Cassian concluded Jian had no intentions of giving a response, Jian finally spoke.

"It will be for the best that it remains as far away from me as possible." Jian said blankly.

"I understand ." Cassian replied with a nod.

"I will see to Decaron and the Starron girl, the young lord of Fort Scabbard will keep her safe, you need not be concerned for her."

"Do not stay out here too long, return to the camp soon. You need your rest." Cassian added.

With a small bow, Cassian took his leave, leaving Jian to the quiet serenity of the forest and his thoughts.

_____________

Neveah heaved a quiet sigh as she slowly washed off the blood and grime from her skin.

It had taken Neveah a few hours to get her mind back in a state to do something other than glare at the tent wall,

Not like there was anything to do even if Neveah wanted to, by King Jian’s orders, she was to sit put and await Menarx’s arrival.

It was already night time and all Neveah could think of doing was getting some much needed sleep.

Even in the Dragon King’s wrath, Neveah was grateful she was still provided with the basic amenities to clean up and she had even been provided a meal.

Neveah guessed even though she was not allowed to leave her tent without permission, she was not entirely on the dragon king’s bad side...yet.

Neveah had left the food lying idle for a while until she recalled she had not had anything to eat since however long she had been held in the dwarf cell.

Neveah dried herself, shaking off thoughts of the dwarf cell.

’One way or the other, we will have to report all that had happened.’ Neveah’s wolf reminded for the hundredth time in the past few hours.

’I do know...’ Neveah replied again.

’I do not believe you do, being captured by dwarves is beyond just us alone, especially given the tense situation between the dragons and the hidden city.’

’Do not get wrapped up in a troublesome position because of Davina.’ Neveah’s wolf continued, always the voice of reason.

’I was in need of the time to think it through.’

’When Menarx arrives, we will tell him what has happened. But we do not need to bring up Davina’s name.’ Neveah compromised.

’If she is out to get us, bringing up her name is the least of your worries Veah.’ Neveah’s wolf replied, but she did not argue with Neveah’s decision.

That was the best course of action Neveah could think of for the time being, the dragon king required an explanation and it was within his rights.

Though Neveah had been stubborn enough to tell him off before, she knew he had done her no wrong.

Neveah glanced down at the change of clothing she had been provided, it was a male’s clothing but Neveah could not be picky at a time like this.

It was already good enough that she would not have to be in her soiled riding dress.

The clothing was a plain white tunic and leather breeches, thankfully, it was meant for a small sized male and so it was not terribly oversized.

Neveah changed into it and walked over to the bed, taking a seat.

She glanced down at the small cut on her palm, Neveah had been ignoring the slight sting from the cut all this while since she had greater concerns.

But now that even Neveah’s broken rib was mostly healed, Neveah had to wonder why a surface would was yet to heal.

Neveah recalled she had gotten the cut from the thorny bush outside the tunnel’s exit.

The cut should already have healed, but somehow it was still just as fresh as though Neveah had just been injured and it stung badly too.

There was a black coloration around the edges, it had alarmed Neveah at first before she realised it was due to the troll golem’s blood.

Somehow, her wound coming in contact with the troll golem’s blood prevented it from healing.

’Other than the sting, I feel fine. Do you suppose it is something we should be worried about?’ Neveah asked her wolf, clenching and unclenching her fist to test her grip.

’I suppose not. We should get it checked by a physician. ’ Neveah’s wolf thought back to her.

"At dawn then." Neveah agreed. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Laying down on the bed, Neveah let her eyes flutter closed, drifting off to a restless sleep.
