Chapter 338: Tunnels (Ch.338)

A low growl rumbled out of Menarx’s throat, he tilted his head to the side, slowly and in a predatory manner, his fierce gaze settling on Everon.

All that echoed in Menarx’s head at this moment was the fact that Neveah was missing and Everon’s reasoning was not much appreciated at this time.

"Let go." Menarx ordered directly.

"Tell me what Kirgan has said." Everon insisted, unfazed by Menarx’s agitated state.

He still held on to Menarx’s shoulder, his grip firm and unyielding.

"She disappeared from the academy...two days ago." Menarx forced out the words through gritted teeth.

Everon breathed a sigh, nodding slowly.

"First, we must receive a full report from Kirgan. It is still not enough reason to jump to conclusions." Everon maintained his stance.

"Everon..." Menarx began in a dark tone but Everon cut him off.

"Listen Narx...we have a mission at hand, one of great consequence. You know this better than anyone."

"We cannot have our commanding dragon compromised and raging will not help you find her..."

"If we carelessly engage the dwarves, you said it yourself that they are not to be underestimated. We are facing adamantium here Narx."

"Calm yourself and hear Kirgan out, we will decide accordingly."

"If the dwarves have Neveah, the chances are they knew you were coming... do not give them that satisfaction." Everon lectured.

Menarx sucked in a deep, shaky breath, nodding his head slowly.

"Conrad, I do not care how, but I want to know everything those dwarves know... and I want to know it now!" Menarx made clear as he walked past Everon.

Neveah’s eyes fluttered open, a horrified gasp escaping her lips as she awakened.

Neveah was not unclear on her situation, she recalled it exactly that she had just been with the dark sorcerer.

There was a black cloak draped over her, fending off the chills and Neveah could guess just who had left it.

Neveah quickly shrugged it off, frowning in displeasure as she glared daggers at the cloak as though it would make her feel even the slightest bit better.

"What happened here?" Neveah murmured, glancing around her environment warily, to realize she was in some sort of dark tunnel.

To her left was a passageway that soon ended with a tunnel wall and to her right was another passageway of which she could not see the end.

"Where is this place?" Neveah asked aloud even though she knew that no one would have the answers she sought.

’Veah, we should get out first. This is not a promising location to defend against an attack...we can hardly shift in here.’ Neveah’s wolf reminded her of the limitations the small tunnel ensured.

Neveah got up to her feet at her wolf’s bidding, groaning quietly at the numbness in her legs from the awkward position she repeatedly found herself in.

Neveah glanced down at the red riding dress she had on and sighed quietly, the riding dress was nothing compared to her golden tresses that was a beacon light even in the darkness.

One could not tell what lurked within these tunnels and the last thing Neveah wanted was to draw unnecessary attention to herself.

Especially not when she had no idea where she was and where she was even heading to beyond the tunnels.

With great reluctance, Neveah picked up the black cloak and draped it over her shoulders, pulling the large hood over her head to conceal her hair.

It took a short moment for the numbness to ease away and Neveah began heading in the only direction of the tunnel that was not a dead end.

"We should still be somewhere around the dwarven citadel. We could not have gone that far in such a short time." Neveah reasoned to herself, studying the damp, ancient walls of the tunnel.

The air itself was thick with a musty smell and a chilling draft whispered through the unsettlingly narrow passageway.

"Which means we are somewhere underground and we have to get out as soon as we can."

"The dwarves would know this tunnel better than we do, should they decide to give chase..." Neveah’s wolf contributed her own thoughts but left her words hanging.

There was no need to complete her statement when Neveah could already guess what her wolf was going to say.

If the dwarves hunted them down, having to repay a debt to the dark sorcerer would be the least of Neveah’s worries.

Neveah footsteps echoed ominously, try as she might to keep them quiet.

The sound bounced off the very walls and Neveah had to pause for a moment and spare another glance around to make certain that she was truly alone.

Though the tunnel was dark, Neveah could see just fine and she quickened her steps, briskly walking in the direction she hoped would lead to an exit.

Neveah was grateful she was still in her riding dress, it seemed the only thing luck did in her favor was ensuring she was always dressed for the occasion whenever she was to be kidnapped.

It made a lot easier as Neveah’s dress was specialized to unfavorable conditions much like this one.

As Neveah walked, she rubbed her sore wrists with a quiet sigh. Silver always took quite the time to heal.

The sore ache from her wrists drew Neveah’s thoughts back to the very reason she had ended up in this situation in the first place and that final, sinister expression in Davina’s eyes.

"It is hard to imagine that I did not sense anything off with her all this while... that I could not have imagined she held animosity against me." Neveah murmured.

"We cannot always read the intentions of people correctly, Veah. What matters is that she shall pay in blood for this." Neveah’s wolf reminded her.

Neveah nodded slowly, brushing away her thoughts to focus on making her way out of the tunnel instead.

She was not certain how long it would take her, but Neveah knew if she wanted to return to Keep Skies, she would first need to leave this tunnel far behind her.
