Chapter 325: Mor’rud Recalls 2 (Ch.325)

"But you did." Neveah said, chuckling quietly at Mor’rud’s dramatic look.

"I did...yet at the time, I knew not that I would." Mor’rud replied.

"The mines were well built, not into the depths like the hidden city itself was but still underground. There was only one out let to the surface and it was built for dwarven kind alone, surely could not fit a beast so great."

"The flames scorched down on the mines, sending a heat wave spreading through it but they did not yet burn through and the certainty that he could not reach us emboldened my battalion." Mor’rud said.

"Menarx’s first flame must have just been a ruse...to give a false illusion that the mine would stand." Neveah guessed.

"Yer know it as it is... the flames of the Northern dragons burn through anything and the Lord of Ruby scales hails from the purest bloodline of northern dragons."

"But we had no knowledge of that and we ignorantly believed the protection of the mine walls would suffice against his flames." Mor’rud continued.

"With that certainty, we unleashed our counter attack. Spears of adamantium had been made ready. We dwarves are good for many things, but none as much as our craftsmanship and machinery." Mor’rud added.

"Was Menarx hurt?" Neveah asked.

"Oh no, the Lord of Ruby scales was a beast of flight, a master of his art. His agility was unmatched, our spears were fast but he was faster, he escaped them like they were nothing."

"What he was after, we only realized it too late. Using his ownself as bait, he pushed my battalion to the edge and clinging onto a desperate hope for victory, we opened our adamantium vault hidden in the deepest part of the mines to unleash a full force attack." Mor’rud recalled.

"Once the vault was opened, the second wave of flame came and this time... the mine and the vault which had been the target crumbled... burying the largest storage of adamantium."

"He watched from the skies as we were buried beneath the adamantium vaults we had built with our own hands."

"It is hard to recall what came next after that second wave of fire, all I recall is once the dust and rubble settled, the first sight I caught was his landing and the shift... from beast to man."

"His eyes were dazed as he stood and stared and the words that came next said ’What orders, brother?’ " Mor’rud recounted.

"It was known to us dwarves that dragon kind had the special ability to communicate with their minds across great distances, and so I knew what brother he spoke of... the dragon king."

"And the orders given were soon echoed by the Lord of Ruby scales."

"KILL’...was all he said, red orbs aflame with a terrifying blood lust. Severely injured from the collapse, I watched what was left of my battalion charge at him."

"But there he stood, unfazed yet every one of my kind that got within reach was easily executed...his claws dripped with the blood of all who I knew and I knew soon, my life would be nothing but a droplet of blood trickling down his claws."

"My kin soon realized it was over, those who still had the strength to battle had been annihilated and the rest of us could only await our fate."

"The rest of us which I soon realized was just me, with a portion of my leg still crushed by the rubble. I was the last of a battalion of over a hundred and it is had only taken two waves of flame."

"I wondered then why our king ever ordered for adamantium to be mined...why he would pit us against the most powerful beasts of the realm by chipping at their weakness, knowing they would be sure to retaliate."

"He moved then, closer to me... our eyes had met before he began walking over, crouching down before me. Truly, the breath left me even before his claws tightened around my throat."

"And just when all he had to do was twist with the slightest strength, he paused, his eyes going blank as they had before. I knew he shared words with one of his kin and afterwards he let me go and took his leave as though nothing had happened." Mor’rud recounted.

"I called out to him, I needed to know why he would leave me alive."

"And he said to me... that he did not like being told what to do. I never understood what he meant till I awoke in the dragon castle of North’s end and I heard word..."

"The dwarven King had surrendered, offering all the adamantium mines and the lives of the soldiers at the outpost in exchange for mercy."

"Lord Menarx spared me because he did not wish it to be that he had done exactly as the dwarven King bargained... I still do not understand this reason, yet it saved my life." Mor’rud said, still unable to comprehend it.

Neveah laughed quietly, shaking her head. It sure did sound like Menarx to have done something so unreasonable.

"Now, it is getting late, yer should return to your quarters early, the rest will do some good." Mor’rud advised.

Neveah breathed a reluctant sigh but nodded in agreement, she did need the rest.

Neveah got up to her feet and headed out of the library, taking the long route through the back forest to double back to the residence tower.

As she walked, Neveah was lost in thoughts as she often found herself since her days had fallen into a routine.

’Someone’s here...’ Neveah’s wolf drew her attention to a foreign presence.

Neveah’s brows furrowed slightly as she paused in her step, her arms going behind her back.

"Come out." Neveah demanded, her gaze moving to the large tree behind which she knew someone hid.

There was no response and Neveah sighed before she lunged, arriving behind the tree in the blink of an eye.

Neveah was not certain who she expected to see, but she surely had not expected to find a wide eyed Davina staring back at her.

"Davina? What are you doing here?" Neveah asked in bafflement.
