Chapter 248: Changed Countenance (Ch.248)

"How is it?" King Jian asked Lord Everon who carefully bandaged Menarx’s wounded shoulder with Neveah’s help.

Lord Everon handed the bandage to Neveah and she gently passed it around Menarx’s torso for stability before Lord Everon wrapped up the wounded area gently.

"He lost a ton of blood, but Narx is a strong one. No vital organs were harmed, no thanks to his attacker of course. The spear missed his major wing vein by just a fraction."

" My guess would be it was too dark out and Menarx’s flight was swift, so his attacker only got him in the shoulder. Had Menarx been alerted to the presence of his attacker, the attacker would stand no chance." 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

"The wound is quite deep and that is owed to jostling his injured limb during his flight back, I would say he would find it troublesome to move his right arm for a while."

"Thankfully, his wings are unharmed and so there is no impact on his flight. The damage done is not so severe, he will heal, he only needs to rest undisturbed." Lord Everon reported as he secured the bandage.

"How long will he sleep?" Lord Imagor asked worriedly.

"He will awaken as soon as the herbs wear off, no worries there." Lord Everon assured.

"And how long is that exactly? Given the situation, we need his counsel." Lord Kirgan reminded.

"The brew is potent enough to have him knocked out for two days straight, I would advice you count him out of your plans for that long." Lord Everon replied.

"That is no trouble, Narx’s well being is of utmost importance. The other affairs are nothing more than we can handle." Lord Cassian said with a nod.

"You will watch over him?" King Jian asked Lord Everon.

"Certainly, I will keep an eye out for any changes. You all may go attend to the urgent matter." Lord Everon assured.

"Very well...Kirgan, where is Kaideon?" King Jian asked, turning to his King’s guard.

King Jian’s countenance and tone had completely changed from the worried friend a moment ago to the cold and cruel Dragon King.

"Last I heard, the dune lord went in search of the former royal scribe who had stored away the records. He is presently at the academy of smiths." Kirgan reported.

"Take that spear to the academy with you, I want to know where it was smithed, how it was made, who made it and how many hands it has touched since."

"And fetch Kaideon...at once!" King Jian ordered.

"Aye!" Kirgan accepted the order and took his leave.

"Imagor, go down to the archives, get Rodvan and Garron. I want a comprehensive report on everything they have found so far."

"Afterwards, have our best trackers make flight for the fodder grooves. Rauron and Mauldray will lead. If there is a troll kind lurking in my territory, I want to know exactly where it is!" King Jian hissed.

"Will do." Lord Imagor replied and left to carry out his order.

"Cassian... summon the twelve squadrons." King Jian instructed Lord Cassian.

"My Liege." Lord Cassian bowed and strode away.

With the King’s guard gone, King Jian, Lord Everon, Neveah and the unconscious Menarx were the only ones left in the room.

"Neveah?" King Jian called,

Neveah glanced up in surprise, uncertain why she was being called.

"Return to your quarters, you look a fright." King Jian murmured in a much calmer tone.

Neveah raised a brow as she glanced down at herself. Truly, just as King Jian said, Neveah’s appearance was in a complete disarray.

Neveah had not washed yet, she had spent her morning tossing and turning in pains, soaked in her own perspiration.

She still wore her night dress with only a flimsy robe over it, both were a silver shade which has been dyed red in most parts with Menarx’s blood.

Neveah sighed quietly, she did not even have the strength to worry about her appearance at all and so after a good look at herself, she still could not find it within her to care.

"Does it matter? I am fine, I..." Neveah began to protest against King Jian’s orders but he cut her off.

"Neveah! Have you ever tried listening for once?" King Jian hissed, turning to face Neveah.

The words died on Neveah’s tongue at King Jian’s tone and she could only open her mouth and shut it back up.

"Everon will see to Menarx for now. Return to your quarters and get changed, you are to report to the rider’s academy as was ordered." King Jian continued.

Neveah blinked in astonishment, she could not believe the words King Jian was saying.

The rider’s academy? Who cared about some academy when Menarx was so badly injured?

What exactly would her going to the academy help with other than Neveah having to face a bunch of self absorbed dragon riders?

"But..." Neveah protested again and again she was cut off.

"You want to be a rider? Then first you must know...if your dragon is down, that is precisely when you must stand strong and unwavering." King Jian said in a serious tone.

"There are many eyes on you, Neveah. If you falter for even a moment, then you cannot preserve your life here."

"Go to the academy, keep your eyes out and let me know what word has spread of Menarx’s report. You may return to tend to Menarx at the close of the day." King Jian ordered.

Neveah bit her lip, she knew King Jian was right. There were many eyes on her here in Dragon Keep, the only reason she had chosen to be a rider was to survive.

She could not afford to show weakness now, if Neveah was going to be a dragon rider then she would be one that no one dared look down on.

Neveah understood that, but what did all of this even have to do with King Jian? Did he not stand to gain the most if Neveah failed to qualify as a rider?
