Omega's Rebirth - Chapter 231: Again At The Rickety Bridge ()
A strong gust of wind blew that sent the wooden contraption serving as Neveah’s foothold swaying precariously and Neveah froze up completely, rethinking the wisdom in coming out here.
"Perhaps I should have thought this through more carefully?" Neveah asked rhetorically, a nervous chuckle escaping her lips as she took note of how much farther the other end of the bridge was.
Once again, Neveah made across the rickety bridge. Now, it was not Neveah’s first time going over this bridge, but it was certainly the most daunting crossing Neveah would make since her first visit to Mount Edar.
Neveah could not tell if she could blame her fears on the strangely windy night that would not leave the bridge in it’s place for longer than a second.
"Was this bridge always so shaky at night?" Neveah wondered aloud.
Perhaps there had been many other windy nights before this but Neveah had never taken notice of it,
How could she when all her return trips from Mount Edar made at late hours was right in the warmth of Xenon’s arms, a warmth that drove away every worrisome...
"I couldn’t possibly be scared of height." Neveah murmured to herself in a quiet tone.
It was a strange thought, considering Neveah had ridden two massive dragons and had never once been affected by it.
Perhaps it was something related to trust, on each ride Neveah had taken, she absolutely trusted the dragon with whom she rode.
Neveah had never known of this before, other than dragon riding, Neveah had never confronted a height so great in Xenon’s absence.
There was just that one time she hurried to see Xenon after Lady Kaliana was out of danger, on that day, Neveah had made the crossing all by herself.
If Neveah thought back to it, she had been so excited to see Xenon she had not given much thought as she ran across the bridge.
Neveah shook her head slightly, it was clear to her that she had somehow become much more dependent on the black scaled dragon than she had ever been on anyone.
The thought of it greatly displeased Neveah and while she considered heading back the way she had come, Neveah stilled her fears and sucked in a deep breath.
"Not for confidence in another... just by your own will." Neveah reminded herself.
Neveah straightened her posture the next moment, if there was anything Neveah was adept at, it was putting on a facade that everything was fine even when she was trembling within.
"Never show fear..." Neveah murmured to herself, it was the rule she had always lived by.
"By relying on him, we have slowly lost ourselves." Neveah’s wolf thought to her and Neveah knew her wolf was right.
For one who had lived like Neveah, her greatest strength was the fact that she never completely trusted or relied on anyone but her ownself.
But with Xenon... Neveah had completely forgotten that.
"Not anymore." Neveah assured her wolf as she steadied her mind and made her way across the bridge with a calm and relaxed pace.
Of course, Neveah believed all her internal conflicts were known only to her as she returned to her state of calm,
How could she know that not far off, concealed in the shadows of the night, her every action was closely watched by an extremely baffled dragon king.
Ignorant to this fact, Neveah crossed over to the other side in one piece, letting out a quiet sigh of relief before she made the treacherous climb up the side of Mount Edar.
Neveah soon arrived at the entrance to Xenon’s cave and she climbed in, dusting her hands before she lowered the hood of her cloak.
For a moment, Neveah let her eyes wander about Xenon’s cave, a place that was so familiar to her.
The cave was exactly as Neveah had left it, with the furs folded up neatly at the side and the volumes she was yet to return arranged right beside it.
Neveah slowly walked over to the pile of furs on which she had left another cloak of hers when she had been taken away by Lord Everon and the dragon guards on accusation of harming Lady Kaliana.
Neveah crouched down and placed a hand on the cloak, she knew it had been tampered... she had not gotten to setting it down so neatly, that had to be Xenon’s own doing.
"He must have worried..." Neveah said quietly, sucking in a shaky breath to stay whatever emotions were creeping up.
Neveah pulled her hand back, clenching into tight fists so she was not tempted to touch anything else.
Neveah only wanted to think of what she had come here for, she had come only to clarify that event with Xenon...to make it clear to him that she would not be his excuse to punish himself.
That he had no rights to hurt himself for hurting her... because that would not change the fact that he did hurt her... that he did break every confidence she had held in whatever it was they had.
And now, Neveah could never trust in his warmth and tenderness again without second guessing if truly she was the one in his eyes... or she was just a replica of another.
A reminder of the woman he truly wished to protect and care for. Neveah had lost everything already, family, loved ones, a mate...her own life even.
Perhaps it was more accurate to say Neveah had never truly had any of this, not even her own life.
But if there was anything Neveah had, it was her dignity...it was all she had left.
Neveah would not pine after a man who had another in his heart, she would never desire what was not meant to be hers... Neveah would much rather cut out her own heart than be the fool again.
"Alessio was enough... that once was enough." Neveah murmured to herself.
To put herself out to be broken again... Neveah would never risk it for anyone, not even if that was Xenon.
