Chapter 210: Pressure (Ch.210)

A speck of gleaming gold could be seen high up at the highest mountain range of one of the mountains surrounding Dragon Keep.

This speck of gleaming gold was a rare sight and a closer look revealed a massive dragon, as large as a small mountain, with scales of gold.

It was laid down at the top of the mountain, with it’s hind limbs curled behind him and his fore limbs rested across each other, creating a slight elevation upon which his large head was laid.

It’s eyes were closed, the dragon seemed to be in a deep slumber and the rays of the sunlight reflected off it’s scales, creating an enchanting display of colors.

Truly, this was considered a rare sight as the golden scaled dragon was rarely within the sight of the mortal eyes.

With the responsibility of an Empire as large as the Asvarian stronghold, a sight of the golden scaled dragon beyond keep walls and on a lower altitude beneath the clouds was hardly seen.

However, it was still a height much too great and the commoners of the Central citadel and residents of keep district still were not privileged to take notice of the sight.

Clearly, the golden scaled dragon preferred it this way. To always be a figure shrouded in mystery, standing high above the rest of the world...known yet difficult to comprehend or understand.

Some distance from the golden scaled dragon, a panting Lord Rodrick ascended the mountain range, his heavy breathing audible on the quiet mountain range.

"Scales! There you are! I’ve searched everywhere!" Lord Rodrick exclaimed in exasperation as he leaned down, resting his hands on his knees.

Lord Rodrick took a moment to catch his breath, lifting a hand to wipe the sweat gathered on his brows.

After a moment had passed and his breathing was finally stable, Lord Rodrick lifted a glare to the golden scaled dragon who had not even acknowledged Lord Rodrick’s presence. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

"I am much too old to undergo such strenuous activities like mountain climbing...My Liege." Lord Rodrick said, still puffing.

The eyelids of the golden scaled dragon twitched slightly but that was the only sign that showed he heard any of what Lord Rodrick had said.

However, there was truly no need for words. Lord Rodrick had served by the golden scaled dragon for long enough to guess a little measure of his thoughts.

And so Lord Rodrick could tell just what response the golden scaled dragon would have to his words.

"Perhaps not as old as Your Grace...but our life spans cannot be likened to one another. For my race, I am considered to be of retirement age." Lord Rodrick defended.

Again, the golden scaled dragon gave no response and Lord Rodrick heaved a sigh.

"I do not mean to disrupt Your Grace’s peace, I came only to report on the tasks you have assigned to me." Lord Rodrick continued as he moved closer to the golden scaled dragon.

"The girl has regained consciousness, Lord Menarx is tending to her in person. I have kept a close eye, she is in good health... other than being furious at Lord Menarx."

"Clearly, she intended to let us all believe her dead so she would not have to return to Dragon Keep." Lord Rodrick relayed.

A low rumble sounded from the golden scaled dragon and a stream of steam streaked out of it’s nostrils.

"Your Grace already expected that much. It was more likely she was hidden than dead yet you would rather Lord Menarx believed the latter." Lord Rodrick continued.

"Just as you suspected, the dune lord had a hand in her disappearance...or at least he knew of her location but said nothing of it. For some reason, he favors the girl." Lord Rodrick added.

"I suppose there is due cause, would you have me look into it?" Lord Rodrick asked.

The golden scaled dragon moved slightly, shifting his fore limb.

"I understand. The dune lord has Your Grace’s trust, there will be no need to pry into his business." Lord Rodrick nodded in understanding.

"Other than the girl, there is more to report. The dragon lords seek to call a rider’s council... perhaps it is too soon after the last but the times call for it."

"Word of Lord Xenon’s wild haze has spread even beyond keep skies, as always, those who bear rebellious thoughts will not let go of an opportunity to tear down Dragon Keep."

"Their first target is again Lord Xenon and the wild haze has come at most inopportune time."

"Accompanied with the slight disturbance from the dwarves, those rebels have begun rallying contrary opinion and spreading rumours in their attempt to conform public sentiment."

"They say the return of Lord Xenon’s wild haze is a bad omen that forebears turbulent times. They seek to pressure the dragon council to decide on the long standing topic of Lord Xenon’s fate." Lord Rodrick revealed in a grim tone.

"Petitions are flooding the keep as we speak. I fear they will not be satisfied with barring of mount Edar alone... their target is Lord Xenon and the troubles of the past will be stirred again."

"At such a time, the Lords of the great fortresses send word of their unrelenting support to the council’s decision...yet there is no word from Fort Blazed."

"The council wishes to deliberate over the petitions regarding Lord Xenon and what must be done to keep these rebels in check."

" Equally the affair of Fort Blazed is worrisome...will Your Grace allow a council?" Lord Rodrick asked.

The eyes of the golden scaled dragon finally came open, a deadly look flashing in his eyes.

"I leave them be for a moment and these pests believe they can grow too daring... asking me to forsake Xenon?" King Jian thought to himself.

King Jian passed a look to Lord Rodrick knowing Lord Rodrick would understand his meaning.

"I will call for a rider’s council." Lord Rodrick said in understanding as he turned to take his leave.
