Chapter 296: Chapter 296: Successful Proposal

She had been with Vincent Vance for so long, yet they never held a wedding or took wedding photos. Vincent always said he’d make it up to her, but ultimately, he gave her nothing, and she never asked for anything from him.

Victor Grant, seeing May Morgan’s eyes brimming with tears, hurriedly grabbed a tissue to help her wipe them away: "Hey, don’t cry. If I had known this would make you cry, I wouldn’t have shown it to you."

May looked up at Victor, noticing how someone who used to be full of energy had suddenly become so emaciated from taking care of her that he seemed to have lost his human form.

"Thank you." May wiped her tears away, suddenly smiling at Victor.

Victor became a bit embarrassed by her thanks, scratching his head awkwardly as he spoke to May: "Well, I just wanted to take care of you. Seeing you like this makes me feel bad, so you don’t have to thank me. I wanted to do this voluntarily."

"I just heard from your mom that you treat me so well because I resemble your deceased sister. Is that true?"

"No, no. Maybe at first, I noticed you because you look a bit like my sister, but honestly, I truly like you, and it’s got nothing to do with my sister. I... I really love you."

Victor lowered his head in shame, letting out a self-deprecating sigh: "I know I’m not good enough for you. I’ve done so many bad things in the past, but those women were all willing. I never forced anyone, of course. I know I’m not a good guy, and I’ll accept being called a scumbag. But you have to understand, if there’s any woman in this world who can change me, Victor Grant, it has to be you, and only you."

May looked down at Victor sitting by her bed, then turned her head to glance at that invitation card, silently sighing in her heart.

"Victor, could you give me a day to consider? I’ll give you an answer tomorrow."

"Hmm?" Victor looked at May, confused. Answer? What answer?

Wait, could the answer May mentioned be...

Victor nodded enthusiastically, agreeing at once: "Sure, sure, I agree."

Saying this, he excitedly stood up from the chair, pacing around the room somewhat aimlessly: "What should I do now? May, what do you think I should do? Oh, is there something you want to eat? I’ll go get it for you now."

Something to eat?

May glanced at Victor, suddenly telling him: "Can you go to the bakery and ask if they have durian pastry? I feel like eating some."

"Okay, okay, I’ll get it for you right away."

Victor excitedly opened the door and left. Before long, he came back holding an entire durian.

May was dumbfounded seeing him return holding a whole durian in his arms: "Did you, did you buy the wrong thing? I wanted durian pastry."

"My mom says all people who like durian pastry also love durians; they’re just afraid of the strong smell. Don’t worry, you eat, and I don’t mind."

As Victor talked, he began to skillfully open a durian for her. Watching him concentrate so intently, May’s glance flickered, suddenly reminded of Vincent.

"Doesn’t the smell bother you?"

Victor had bought a fully ripe durian; it smelled strong just carrying it around. Yet he didn’t seem to react to it at all.

"No, I think it’s quite tasty. I used to eat it often." Saying this, Victor handed a piece of durian to May and took a piece for himself. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

It turned out he liked durian too, which was quite rare.

"When I used to eat durian, Vincent hated it; he couldn’t stand the smell..." May said softly, looking down as she took the durian from Victor.

"Then it’s good to be with me, right? We both have similar tastes, don’t we?" Victor chuckled.

Similar tastes? Alright then.

May ate three pieces from the whole durian, with Victor finishing the rest. Watching him eat with such relish, May suddenly found this man quite endearing.

Sometimes, when couples are together, their views need to align, or else conflicts will arise.

Victor, holding the leftover durian shell, suddenly placed it beside May’s bed, then without a word, knelt down on one knee.

May looked at him, surprised and unsure of what to do: "What, what are you doing?"

After speaking, she reached out to pull him up. The durian shell was so hard; kneeling on it was risking one’s life, wasn’t it?

Victor grabbed her hand, looking up at her: "May, marry me."

He took a diamond ring from his pocket and waited for May’s response.

The diamond was a full five carats, large and weighty, clearly of excellent quality. This wasn’t something he’d impulsively bought; it had been specially prepared, always kept hidden in his pocket, waiting for the right moment.

May thought Victor’s proposal ceremony was truly speechless. Who proposes by kneeling on a durian?

She looked at Victor’s knee on the durian shell. Although he wore dark pants so she couldn’t see if it was bleeding, just the thought of those hard spines on the durian made her feel pained.

"Victor, please get up. Don’t do this." May sat up straight on the bed, looking conflicted, hastening to pull Victor up, but he pulled her into his embrace.

"If you don’t promise me, I’ll keep kneeling." Victor was tough, covered in scars, so a little durian was nothing to him, but kneeling for too long would wear out even the toughest person.

Moreover, May realized up close that Victor’s leg, the one kneeling on the durian, was actually bleeding.

They were both humans, after all. Seeing him torture himself like this, May felt sorry, and guilty towards Heather Holt, who had been so kind to her.

She turned to look at the wedding invitation set at the bedside, the wedding photo of Vincent and Brianna White glaring up at May.

She bit her lip, and as her tears fell, she turned to Victor and nodded: "I accept."

Victor saw her tears, knowing she accepted out of defiance, but he couldn’t care about such things now. All he wanted was her nod.

Quickly, he slipped the diamond ring onto May’s left ring finger, kissing her hand bearing the ring: "May, thank you for giving me the chance to cherish you for life."

May glanced at Victor, a gentle smile forming at her lips: "I should be the one thanking you, thank you for willing to protect me for a lifetime."

Victor smiled in satisfaction, suddenly hugging May tightly, saying with emotion: "May, you’re finally mine."
