Chapter 653: Chapter 493: Cabin in the Woods_2

Wildfire Team’s four members discussed their tactics and confirmed the range and timing of the monster’s activities with Nenetiyeer, deciding to take immediate action to ensure they captured the monster during the day.

...

An hour later, in a forest south of Hachitu Tuur Village, Weiss and his three companions moved forward in a diamond formation.

Their target was the residence built by Sizar, which Nenetiyeer had disclosed to them, a small log cabin erected by Sizar in this forest.

"Shit, what the hell happened here? How could there be so many corpses?"

Ciro kicked at a half-rotted thing on the ground, his face looking quite grim.

"It’s really disgusting. I’ve never seen corpses like these before."

As he spoke, he rubbed his foot against a nearby tree to scrape off some black, unidentified liquid clinging there.

"This must have been a leopard, including that half of a black-spot deer we saw earlier, making it the eighth animal corpse we’ve found so far."

Weiss examined the nearly unrecognizable mess of flesh and concluded.

"The monster must be nearby. It seems to have a large appetite but appears only interested in the innards and brains, it’s killed all the wildlife in this forest."

The others remained silent upon hearing this, the atmosphere especially heavy.

Throughout their journey, they had seen virtually no living creatures, from small birds to large beasts, and even the sound of insects was absent.

The whole forest felt like a dead zone.

"There’s Sizar’s cabin up ahead. Let’s prepare the scrolls first to avoid any combat surprises."

After speaking, Weiss tore up the scrolls engraved with Constitution Enhancement and Iron Armor Spell.

With the Spirit Detection Technique also boosting him, he had become an existence akin to a Super Soldier.

This was a strategy previously discussed by the team; instead of spreading their strength by using the scrolls on different individuals, it’s better to focus all the power into a single point.

"Stay close to me, Ciro and Anna keep watch on either side, Mikel cover our rear, everyone stick close to me, don’t spread out."

Weiss led the way, the group moving towards the target cabin following marks on the surrounding trees.

"Wait! Listen up! Do you hear that noise again?"

After about ten minutes of walking, Weiss suddenly stopped.

"What’s that sound? Why can’t I hear anything?"

Ciro looked baffled.

"Weiss, you’re currently enhanced by Constitution Enhancement, your hearing is much better than ours, what’s wrong, anything unusual?"

Anna asked.

"There’s some noise up ahead, I hear some growling. Be careful, the monster might be right there."

Weiss pointed in a direction and then cautiously led the group forward.

As they neared, a small clearing appeared within the woods where they could faintly see a small cabin standing there.

"It has to be it! It’s inside! This Hunter’s cabin was built by Sizar, and it looks like the monster is likely him!"

Weiss’s eyes emitted a silvery white glow as he stared intently at a spot about fifty meters ahead.

Through his senses, he could already see a humanoid creature over two meters tall, bent over inside the cabin, doing something.

From its posture and movements, it seemed to be feeding.

"Everyone pay attention, approach the target, tread lightly, and wait for my lead. Ciro, go up in the trees to cover us, Anna set up explosives nearby in case we need them, Mikel, follow me!"

Weiss signaled to his teammates and then, crouching with Mikel, headed toward the cabin.

As they got closer, even without the enhancement from Constitution, Mikel could now hear noises coming from the cabin.

It was a deep-throated growling sound, accompanied by the distinctive noise of a mouth chewing on food. novelbuddy.cσ๓

When they got within twenty meters of the cabin, Weiss saw the monster suddenly stop its feasting and sharply turn its head towards them.

"Shit, it’s seen us! Mikel, get behind that tree, leave this to me!"

"Da-da-da-da-da-da-da!"

A burst of gunfire resounded as Weiss, from about twenty meters away, attacked the monster in the cabin.

Bullets shot out like raindrops, piercing through the fragile wooden planks and striking the monster without miss.

"Roar!"

The monster let out a roar and charged out of the house after breaking open the door.

Although Weiss’s rapid-fire bullets hit the target, they were not enough to be fatal to this monster.

"Shit!"

Seeing it charge, he rolled away to dodge its attack and pulled a shimmering dagger from his boot, stabbing it into the monster’s body.

However, such an attack was clearly not fatal, at least for this monster; it could completely ignore it.

Weiss rolled to his feet and fired bursts from his automatic rifle aimed at the monster’s head.

Mikel also emerged from behind a tree, firing at the monster with his weapon.

"Dada dada!"

"Pop~"

A sound like a watermelon splitting rang out as the monster’s head, hit by such concentrated fire, instantly burst open.

Its body lost balance, and before it could launch a second attack, it was already dead on the spot.

The combat was extremely quick; the exchange from confrontation to the end took less than five seconds.

"Weiss, honestly, I just set up my gun, and you’ve already finished over there. That scroll was a total waste."

Ciro’s voice came through the earpiece, still crouched dozens of meters away.

"Alright, sniping visibility in the forest isn’t good; you probably won’t get to mix it up. Hurry over, let’s go inside the house and see if there’s any useful intelligence."

As Weiss spoke, he approached the dead body of the monster.

The mutant was now headless and lay motionless on the ground, its appearance and organization matching the intelligence provided, confirming it was the same type of monster.

"Definitely a mutant, still wearing human clothes, tattered and white, kind of like a lab coat..."

He observed the monster in front of him and suddenly froze, his eyes narrowing.

"A white lab coat? No! This is Sizar!"

To corroborate his statement, a rapid series of footsteps came, and the surrounding trees rustled.

Weiss abruptly looked up only to see a crimson head peeking out from behind a tree next to Mikel, greedily watching him.

"Watch out!"

Weiss only managed to shout a warning when the monster had already pounced on Mikel.

"Ah!"

Mikel screamed as the monster’s sneak attack came silently and swiftly, catching him off guard and immediately unprepared.

He managed to stretch an arm in front of him just in time. This move successfully saved his life.

The monster’s teeth failed to reach his neck, instead opening a bloody gash on his arm.

"Bang!"

A gunshot suddenly sounded; it was Ciro.

The monster that had knocked down Mikel had its head blown off instantly.

The sniper rifle’s potent kinetic damage was too much for these monsters to withstand as it became a corpse the moment it lost its head.

However, the crisis was not over as more monsters burst forth, roughly about five in number.

"Mikel! I just saved your life! We’re even now!"

Ciro’s voice rang out in everyone’s ears.

"Damn it, what time do you think it is to be talking about that now!"

Weiss pushed off the ground and immediately rushed to Mikel’s side, knocking away another monster that was launching a sneak attack.

At the same time, his arm was scratched by the monster’s claws.

However, a flash of white light shimmered on his arm, preventing him from being injured.
