Chapter 73: Spy From the Righteous Path

“Hmm? We’re back here again?” Lu Yang opened his eyes, finding himself back in the mysterious white space.

There were many familiar people around him, including Meng Jingzhou, Man Gu, Chi Xulong, and Shen Jinyi.

Only ten people from the Yanjiang Branch successfully passed the first two rounds. Lu Yang recognized half of them. As for the other half, he didn’t get the chance to trick them for their personal information when he was impersonating an examiner.

The memories from the first two rounds gradually flowed into his mind. Mantis Fist in the first round. Pushing the cart of potatoes in the second round...

“It looks like the Everlasting Creed’s trials aren’t all that hard either.” Lu Yang felt that his performance was average. Anyone with a brain can do it.

“I think so too,” Meng Jingzhou agreed. “Just get bitten by the spider in the first round and deliver a punch to that fat guy in the second round.”

Lu Yang looked at Meng Jingzhou, slightly astounded. “Hmm? Why are our methods of passing different?”

Meng Jingzhou waved his hand confidently. “Do you even have to ask? My answer is definitely the correct one. Yours was just a fluke.”

Lu Yang scoffed at Meng Jingzhou’s confidence. “Ridiculous! In the first round, my comprehension of Mantis Fist demonstrates my proficiency in martial Dao. What can your performance in the first round show? Luck? Is that what matters for a member of the Everlasting Creed? It’s clear that my answer is the correct one!”

“I advise you to face reality.”

As Man Gu watched the two’s intense argument by the side, he silently recalled how he had passed. In the first round, I learned perseverance from the spider, then learned to act with strategy from the mantis. In the second round, I practiced perspective-taking and made sure to be thorough in my work.

“Now that I think about it, my method of passing does seem a little too ordinary. It looks like Brother Lu and Brother Meng are correct. I just don’t know whose method is the most correct,” Man Gu mumbled to himself. He felt that he had once again learned something new.

There was still no conclusion to Lu Yang and Meng Jingzhou’s squabble. As a clear-headed bystander, Man Gu stepped in to stop them. “Is it possible that both of your methods are correct? The diabolic creed emphasizes acting unscrupulously and doing whatever one wishes to. Perhaps there is no correct answer, or perhaps any method that works is a correct answer.”

Lu Yang and Meng Jingzhou stared at Man Gu in astonishment. They felt that he made a lot of sense.

Lu Yang marveled, “I didn’t expect the diabolic creed’s trials to be so open-ended in style.”

Meng Jingzhou nodded.

“Speaking of which, we’ve only passed two rounds. Why are we back here? What about the third round?” The trio suddenly recalled they had proper things to do.

The vice creed leader’s figure appeared in the sky once again. He held an orb the size of his palm with a small slit in the middle. Taking a step in mid-air, the mysterious white space immediately changed. With him as the center, buildings began to emerge like tides surging. City walls, palaces, courtyards, small pavilions, towering mountains, rivers that traversed through the whole city, pedestrians in a rush, hawkers peddling, cultivators moving mountains and seas... It looked just like a grand cultivation city!

Once again, the vice creed leader split everyone up by branch. The ten people from the Yanjiang Branch sat in a small pavilion where they could see the scenery outside.

The vice creed leader’s emotionless voice sounded in everyone’s ears. “Congratulations on passing the first two rounds of the trials. We will now proceed to the third round.

“This is a city I have simulated. In a little while, I will unleash your inherent nature. It will make you believe that this is the real world and let you do the bad things you genuinely want to do. The more destruction you bring about, the higher our evaluation of you. The time limit is one day and one night.”

The vice creed leader raised the orb in his hand. The orb’s slit widened, revealing a black pupil.

This wasn’t an orb but a gigantic eye!

As the eye opened, strange rays of purple light enveloped the entire city.

When the vice creed leader’s consciousness returned to the headquarters, he was still holding the giant eye. “As expected of the Immortal Eye crafted by the Everlasting Immortal. Human nature is the most complex. Only an immortal treasure is capable of releasing people’s inherent natures and drawing out their deepest, darkest side.”

The vice creed leader was reluctant as he returned the Immortal Eye to the creed leader. There aren’t many opportunities to use an immortal’s treasure.

In theory, he didn’t have the authority to use the Immortal Eye. However, for the purpose of starting the third round, the creed leader had temporarily lent it to him.

The creed leader stressed, “The third round of the trials is extremely crucial. It concerns whether spies from the righteous path have infiltrated the diabolic path. Since the Immortal Eye can let loose a person’s inherent nature, with how kind the righteous cultivators are, they wouldn’t cause much destruction. Under the light of the Immortal Eye, those righteous cultivators won’t have a chance to go against their true nature and commit murder and arson! Furthermore, if the righteous cultivators witness acts of injustice, they would even lend a helping hand. That way, we’ll be able to filter out those righteous cultivators who have tried to infiltrate our ranks!”

To become a member of the Everlasting Creed, the first requirement is that one mustn’t be a spy from the righteous path.

The vice creed leader smiled. “Besides, this Immortal Eye can also automatically assess the level of destruction based on one’s cultivation. With the Immortal Eye around, both you and I just have to wait for the results.”

~~~
Squelch!
A pedestrian was pierced through the heart by a sword. The other passers-by shrieked and fled in terror. Behind them was a rogue diabolic cultivator cackling out loud while hacking at those around him, causing their heads to roll to the ground. Corpses were littered everywhere.
“Refreshing, it feels good!” The rogue diabolic cultivator was elated to let their inherent nature run wild. They never had a chance to kill to their heart’s content before. “Today, I will use your corpses to establish my footing in the Everlasting Creed!”
I’m going to make use of this opportunity to kill as much as I like!
“Stop!” A large spear suddenly appeared, deflecting the rogue diabolic cultivator’s sword.
The rogue diabolic cultivator was slightly stunned to see the new joiner. “I was wondering who it was. Isn’t this Fang Hao? You usually put on such a cold facade that I thought you were a true evil diabolic path cultivator. Turns out you’re from the righteous path.”
Fang Hao tried his best to keep his composure, reminding himself that it was a critical moment and that he mustn't expose his identity as a righteous path cultivator. Otherwise, all my previous efforts would have been in vain!
Unfortunately, under the glow of the Immortal Eye’s purple light, any disguise was useless.
I can’t stand the rogue diabolic cultivator’s wanton slaughter! I want to do everything I can to stop it!
This was an impulse from the bottom of his heart that couldn’t be restrained.
Fang Hao clashed with the rogue diabolic cultivator, crossing their sword and spear. For now, it wasn’t clear who would prevail.
~~~

“As I thought, someone from the righteous path has tried to infiltrate us!” the vice creed leader exclaimed irately. If not for the third round, this Fang Hao would have joined the Everlasting Creed!

The creed leader’s gaze was frosty. “You should know what to do without me saying anything.”

The vice creed leader nodded. “I’ll get the Huangyue Branch Leader to kill him now!”

“Kill him my ass! Quickly inform the Huangyue Branch Leader that the location of their base has been exposed and that they need to quickly escape!”

“Ah?” The vice creed leader was not keeping up.

The creed leader was disappointed with the vice creed leader as he explained, “What ah? If Fang Hao could sneak into the trials, it means that the righteous path already knows about the Huangyue Branch’s location. Shouldn’t they be packing up and fleeing right away?”

“Then what about Fang Hao?”

“We can’t kill him. The righteous path definitely has Fang Hao’s soul lamp. Once Fang Hao is killed, the righteous path would know that his identity as a spy has been exposed, and they would all then charge right toward the Huangyue Branch without a second thought. How would they have the time to escape then?”

“Oh.”
