Chapter 98: Chapter 98: Cece Messed Up

Mason Jacobs and Cecilia Quincy’s wedding was held at the top floor of a top-tier hotel in Northgarde. When Elara Hale and Zara Dalton arrived, the wedding had already begun. With the soul-stirring music playing, Cecilia slowly walked towards Mason.

Today, she was the most beautiful bride, in a hand-made haute couture wedding dress worth a fortune, a luxury brand tiara adorned with diamonds. That pure face had only a light touch of makeup, yet appeared all the more transcendent.

She looked at the man in front of her with full joy, unable to suppress the smile at the corner of her lips. She was sure there was no woman happier than her in the world. Everything about today’s wedding was personally designed and overseen by Brother Mason; he gave her a truly dreamy wedding.

Mason took her hand, and amidst the officiant’s blessing, the two embraced and kissed.

Elara saw this scene as soon as she entered.

Her footsteps involuntarily paused, not because she hadn’t let go of Mason, but... the wedding decorations were way too similar to the ones from her wedding.

That wedding was something she eagerly anticipated and valued immensely. From the scenery to the details, she finalized everything one by one herself. Mason laughed at her nit-picking back then, but she didn’t mind. A wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event; of course, she had to take it seriously.

Back then, she never imagined that what she thought was a lifetime would actually only be a short two years.

Zara was stunned as well, instinctively glancing at Elara, somewhat unsure, "Elara, the wedding decorations..."

The same dream-like blue and pink tones, the same ceiling balloons, the same grand displays of lily palace lanterns... If he remembered correctly, even the archway design was exactly the same as what Elara had designed back then...

Is the Jacobs Family so broke that they wouldn’t spend more on wedding decorations, just using old stuff from two years ago?

Elara’s shock lasted only a second before she resumed walking forward unperturbed.

She thought the same as Zara; perhaps Kylie Dalton was so stingy she decided to recycle things from two years ago.

In any case, this had nothing to do with her. She was here for one reason only, to take Jasmine away.

She looked around the venue first; she recognized many of the wealthy ladies in attendance. After all, being married into the Jacobs Family for those two years, this was just basic homework.

Elara quickly spotted Kylie Dalton.

She sat at the main position of the round table in the front row. Beside her was Rosalind Jacobs, and the people seated there were all wealthy or noble. She also noticed Jasmine and Joanne Carter arranged at the adjacent round table.

Elara headed straight for Kylie.

Kylie, as the mother-in-law, had just come down from the stage. Today, she had basked in the limelight extensively; her gown was far more elegant and noble than Cecilia’s bridal gown, completely outshining her. She was enjoying herself, but upon seeing Elara, her face immediately turned grim. She lowered her voice and angrily rebuked, "Elara Hale, what are you doing here? It’s Mason’s wedding day today; you’re not welcome! Get out!"

Rosalind also glanced over, disdainful, "Elara Hale, are you unwilling to let go and want to cause a scene to ruin my brother’s wedding? We’ve arranged over a hundred security personnel throughout the venue. If you dare to make trouble, you’ll be on Northgarde’s front page tomorrow. I advise you not to humiliate yourself."

Elara ignored Rosalind’s comment, looked at Kylie directly, and spoke calmly, "Ms. Dalton, do you know Cecilia adopted a child?"

Kylie sneered, "Do you think Cecilia is like you, a hen that can’t lay eggs? She’s already pregnant with our Jacobs Family blood, no need to go and adopt like you! You really need to find a better reason if you’re trying to sow discord."

Many of the ladies present knew Elara and were gossiping, watching, assuming Elara was here to cause chaos at her ex-husband’s wedding.

Yet, she mentioned the new bride adopted a child? In high society, such matters had implications; it wasn’t uncommon for some to bring back illegitimate children and claim they were adopted. Who could say for sure?

Everyone was keenly listening.

Kylie felt she couldn’t hold her face anymore and immediately put on a stern face, "Elara Hale, don’t be shameless. Get out before I make you leave!"

Elara looked towards the table where Jasmine and Joanne were seated and asked, "How did Cecilia introduce them?"

Kylie glanced over, responded impatiently, "They’re Cecilia’s family sisters!"

She deliberately raised her voice to ensure everyone heard, claiming that Elara was making things up.

Zara smirked coldly and with increased volume said, "Cecilia’s sister? They’re kids from the orphanage—we can contact the orphanage now for proof. Is the Jacobs daughter-in-law supposedly from an orphanage?"

Upon hearing this, everyone was shocked. This was a high society banquet, and yet the Jacobs’ new daughter-in-law had orphanage kids attending? How outrageous!

In an instant, people’s gazes toward Jasmine and Joanne were tinged with disdain, subconsciously moving a bit away.

Kylie was practically fuming. Elara, that wretch, came spouting nonsense aiming to ruin Mason’s wedding!

But with Zara’s shouting, the entire hall already knew about it. No matter how angry she was, she had to clarify this matter in front of so many people, or it would only leave the Jacobs Family open to gossip.

She took a deep breath, instructed Rosalind coolly, "Rosalind, bring those two kids over here and have them confront Elara face to face!"

She absolutely didn’t believe Cecilia would dare bring orphanage children into the banquet. Cecilia might be a bit petty but knows to be aware; how could she be rash enough to bring two paupers in?

Especially when they finalized the invitation list, she eliminated her pair of worker parents’ names herself!

Let alone Cecilia adopting a child—it was insane. Pregnant with Jacobs blood, then adopting a child, and even if Cecilia really did adopt, she wouldn’t dare make that decision without consulting Kylie.

Therefore, she fearlessly had Rosalind bring them over, intending to publicly humiliate Elara.

Rosalind quickly returned with Jasmine and Joanne. With arms crossed, she stood aside, mocking Elara, "People are here; how long can your lie last?"

Elara looked at Jasmine, softened her voice, "Jasmine, tell them how Cecilia brought you here?"

Jasmine’s eyes darted nervously, "I... Aunt Hale, I’ve already been adopted by Aunt Cece, you can’t take me away anymore..."

Elara was taken aback, what did this mean? Wasn’t Jasmine unwilling to go with Cecilia? Why did this sound as if she was doing this willingly?

Could it be Cecilia threatened her?

Thinking of this, Elara looked at her earnestly, "You don’t have to be afraid, tell them the truth. I can definitely take you away, Jasmine, trust me."

There was a hint of malice in Jasmine’s eyes. She didn’t understand why Elara was so detestable; she’d left, why did Elara still chase after her?

She wanted a life of luxury and ease, not to follow a discarded woman and live a hard life!

She knew she had to make things clear now, so she bit her lip and said, "Aunt Hale, I’m doing this willingly. I don’t want to be with you. I want to stay with Aunt Cece. Could you please stop disturbing us?"

Elara was struck by lightning, staring at her in shock, as if looking at a stranger.

Yesterday when they parted, everything seemed fine. Why has it turned out like this?

In that moment, she recalled many things, like seeing Cecilia Quincy’s car when leaving the orphanage, and Jasmine’s strange behavior yesterday.

It was her dull reaction that she didn’t consider that if Jasmine hadn’t accepted Cecilia Quincy, how could she have worn such expensive and beautiful new clothes?

The child she wholeheartedly wanted to bring back and raise had already leaned towards Cecilia Quincy.

She couldn’t accept it and wanted to make one last confirmation, so she looked into Jasmine’s eyes, her voice trembling slightly, "Did Cecilia promise you something? Did she...say bad things about me? Don’t believe her; she’s just deceiving you. Don’t fall into her trap."

Jasmine hung her head, her hands clenched together. At this point, there was no need to pretend. "I just don’t want to stay with you, Aunt Hale. It’s my hard chance to leave the mountains; I want a better life. You understand, right?"

Elara stepped back. She had come full of confidence, thinking she could bring Jasmine back, but she hadn’t expected such a heartbreaking result.

"In that case," swallowing the bitterness in her heart, she said to Jasmine, "I wish you happiness. I won’t disturb you anymore."

With that, she turned and left.

Everything happened too suddenly. Kylie Dalton was in disbelief at how this child was really adopted by Cecilia Quincy!

Even Rosalind Jacobs was stunned, for once not ridiculing Elara.

And the surrounding guests, who noticed the commotion, began to discuss it, "The new Jacobs bride doesn’t seem very bright. What’s she up to?"

"I heard she’s from a small family, with shallow views."

Kylie Dalton’s face changed when she heard this. As she was about to speak, Cecilia Quincy, lifting her skirt, came down from the stage, addressing Elara’s back, "Elara, I knew you’d come to bless me in person. Won’t you sit down and have a drink?"

During the ceremony, she noticed Elara’s presence. Calmly, she continued the ceremony, specifically waiting until it ended to come over, wanting to blow things up so everyone would know, the child Elara wanted to adopt had chosen her instead.

She intended to show everyone that she was more loving than Elara and more favored by the child.

She wanted Brother Mason to see how ridiculous and pathetic Elara was, even a child she wanted to adopt didn’t like her.

At this moment, she didn’t notice the awkward atmosphere, smiling gently at Elara, speaking in the softest voice, "Elara, what’s wrong? Is it because of Jasmine? I’m sorry I didn’t tell you in advance, but the child turned to me for help; I had no choice. You won’t blame me, right?"

Elara stopped in her tracks, turning to see Kylie’s face was stormy, about to drip water, she smiled meaningfully, "Miss Quincy, are you sure you want to discuss this with me in front of everyone?"

Cecilia looked at her innocently, a gleam flashing in her eye, Elara, are you afraid?

However, before she could speak, Kylie sternly interrupted, "Cece, go toast the guests!"

This farce had to end immediately, at least not in front of everyone, or the Jacobs would really lose face!

Cecilia’s foolish act could wait until after the wedding to be reckoned behind closed doors.

Cecilia was stunned for a moment, not understanding why Kylie was protecting Elara. She looked at Kylie, bewildered, "Mom, I..."

Before she could finish, Kylie coldly interrupted, "Shut up and go toast!"

Cecilia heard the warning in her words, dared not speak again, reluctantly nodding, she turned to find Mason Jacobs but saw him staring dazedly at Elara. A surge of anger rose inside her, and she bit her lip, walked over to him, "Brother Mason, let’s go toast."

Mason retracted his gaze, nodding slightly, "Okay."

The Jacobs forcibly ended this farce, naturally, no one would refuse them face, and guests all resumed their seats as if nothing had happened.

Elara had no reason to stay, giving Jasmine one last glance, she turned and left without any reluctance.

Jasmine felt a bit of panic. Growing up in the mountains, she had never encountered something so complex. She originally thought the Cecilia who brought her to the big city was formidable, but she turned out to be ordered around by the elder woman and didn’t dare to retort.

And that elder woman clearly did not welcome her, would her life in the Jacobs be smooth?

In her panic, she didn’t notice Joanne Carter quietly leaving.

Elara had just reached downstairs when a timid, childish voice came from behind, "Sister."

Elara paused, seeing Joanne, she quickly asked, "How did you come down here?"

Joanne mustered the courage to step forward, "Sister, please adopt me."

Elara was stunned.

It was the second time Joanne said such a thing to her.

The first time, she was ready to adopt Jasmine, so she gently turned her down. She hadn’t expected Joanne to bring it up again today.

Now, though she didn’t need to adopt Jasmine anymore, she had no mind to adopt another.

Seeing her silent, Joanne, thinking Elara was still reluctant to let go of Jasmine, quickly said, "Sister, Jasmine isn’t worth it. She pretends to be innocent and kind in front of Mrs. Langley and you, but she bullies the orphanage kids, she never wanted to be adopted by you, but she didn’t want everyone’s blame, so she feigned being forced. Being adopted by the wealthy, she’s complacent. Sister, she’s not worth it, please adopt me!"

Elara frowned, "How old are you, these aren’t things you should worry about. Moreover, she’s still your friend, don’t talk about friends behind their backs."

It’s not that she didn’t believe Joanne, but to her, this little girl seemed too scheming.

She didn’t want to say more, turning to leave, Joanne bit her lip, calling to her back, "But if I don’t fight for it, I’ll be stuck in the mountains forever. I want to study, go to college, have a broader life. I don’t want just marriage and children in my future. Sister, maybe there’s only this one chance to change my fate, am I wrong to fight for it?"

Zara Dalton was moved hearing this, instinctively stopping to speak, but Elara caught his wrist, whispering, "Let’s go."
